I get the impression they're going to lean into the perception around him returning as some kind of cynical betrayal of his principles etc. and him previously leaving the company and swearing he'd never go back. Seth's worked reaction at SS and his brief comment about Punk at RAW also reinforces my perception that they're going to lean into that. I agree with Bryan that he's going heel, but it would be self-defeating to do it immediately as fans are still just excited he's back. They're 100% laying the groundwork for him to be a heel though

If Punk took any jabs at AEW, these two would have made a 15 minute video on how he's a toxic timebomb that's endangering the lockeroom. What exactly is "PG Punk?" When he was in AEW as a babyface, people kept saying how they couldn't wait for him to turn heel and be like how he was in WWE, which was a company that was PG at the time. He was one of the more authentic characters and best talkers in the company while he was there, so using "PG Punk" as some kind of isult falls flat, lol.

Tony noted on his Wembley media scrum he wasn't able to comment legally on Punk joining WWE (which, honestly, makes no sense whatsoever)... so maybe Punk is in the same boat. Moreover, a good portion of the WWE crowd doesn't watch AEW, doesn't read "dhirt sheets" and has no clue he's got a trail of drama behind him. Perhaps the guy simply wants to take the stance of starting at a fresh slate without insulting the other guys. Lastly, it's also possible Hunter and him decided AEW wasn't worth mentioning.

Everything punk said feels safe now, but once he turns at the right moment, everything is going to fit right into his first heel promo and that's fantastic
If the idea behind the promo was Punk wanting to move on from all the drama, it's probably for the best. As much as I love controversial Punk, clearly events have shown when he is controversial, drama follows.

I mean.... they scheduled a CM Punk promo in the main event after being away for 10yrs.. and gave the talker 6 mins to talk. As soon as I saw him come out with 8mins remaining, I just thought, "Wow, they are really only going to give him 6mins to talk by the time he gets to the ring?" Looking at this show, you could have easily trimmed a match length or 2. I dont blame him for it. Should have at least given him 10 mins to talk if not 13-15 mins. No one was expecting a Tony Kahn 30 to 40mins segment, but 6 mins?

I guess I just expected some reference to why he left AEW... but he kinda avoided that.
But he didn't avoid anything when he debuted in AEW. So that one felt more authentic. More powerful. And more eagerly anticipated. I'm sure WWE fans missed him being in WWE, but unless you just weren't that devoted a Punk fan, you were watching him in AEW, so it's not like he's been "gone" for some of us, we just watched him on a different channel.
So not a bad promo. But the AEW one was better. Both entrances were powerful, but they couldn't even do the show unless he came out first in AEW. That one will always rank higher for me... but the catch is, it ranks higher because he had been gone from WWE and wrestling, period, for so long. So it all ties in to make for two great moments... but the AEW moment had more lasting impact. And if I'm honest, that's the one I watch again when I want to remember him before the crap storm started.
That’s how it works. Number one pretends number two doesn’t exist. Why would WWE want AEWs dirty laundry aired on their TV? It would be free advertising for AEW, and the majority of their audience don’t even watch AEW anyway.
My favourite bit was halfway through when he shouts “I’m here for me!” then pauses, realises he’s contradicted the entire promo to that point, and shouts, “I’m here for you!” again. Never change, Punk.

I don’t get it most ppl seem to only like Cm Punk because of his promos so they want him starting trouble goin off script shooting every promo.. Hey He happens to be a really good pro wrestler in ring as well.. Just shut up enjoy that he’s back and look forward to his next “In Ring” fueds not chase drama and cause chaos.. Ppl want wanted him to bring AEW badly I loved the promo he’s moved on and ready for a fresh start.. Maybe one day he’ll address AEW but doubt WWE gone let him do it on the programming..
I think Bryan is right... I felt like he was going to be working heel throughout the whole promo. He said all these "nice" things... but if you watched the delivery, and his facial expressions, it felt like he was almost being sarcastic the whole time... then started talking about how "Everybody welcomed him with open arms... well, almost everyone" with that signature Punk smirk and glint in his eye... Then ending on "Im not here to make friends, I'm here to make money"... Watch... He's gonna turn heel in a hurry. As far as honeymoon periods... It seemed like a very mixed reception from the crowd to me. And if Im not mistaken, they may have even piped in a little bit of the chants and cheers... because at one point you're hearing all this roaring, but they're showing shots of the crowd and a lot of them are just standing there with their arms crossed... and it almost sounds like competing crowds saying different things at times. It felt almost awkward in some ways... like they didn't really know how to respond. I mean you did get that big pop when his music hit, but then it died off pretty swiftly.
It worked as a fantastic display of how, for all the talk, CM Punk is ultimately just another carny. His ethics have the consistency of pudding.

Punk vs dax was a good watch. Also the match with Eddie Kingston was another decent match and of course the mjf match. Look at edge. It’s difficult to get a decent match from some of that roster.
"We're still waiting for Bailey to break up with Damage CTRL" - Well, if Bailey and the crew break up, then the Japanese performers need Dakota to cut promos. This is WWE, your promo ability is your lifeline (unless HHH decides to overturn the ol' Vince logic of why pay two people when one can do both jobs).
But can Dakota match Bailey on the mic? The WWE have the ABEMA deal. Right now, Nakamura is there every other week with interviews and segments featuring Mutoh to hype up WWE content hence his constant semi-push as of late. The WWE clearly want the three women to help out, but if Bailey just outshines Dakota nonstop, then American main roster audiences may get bored and bury the three others by proxy when they're supposed to be strong.
It's interesting how in NXT, Kairi/Asuka/Iyo's promo ability were never a factor and they all got over and were given time to shine based on their wrestling ability. But being in front of main roster audiences does hit differently...

I really think WWE is looking Punk as a “face that’s here to stay” with everyone he’ll face to give him a sour welcoming and that he’s a hypocrite to come back. It’s a safe approach for a controversial wrestler as Punk.

If it were me I'd drama farm this to the moon.
Start a Miz TV style show with Punk and have him declare to the world that every week he's there he's going to drop some juicy gossip about the journey that led him back to WWE. Each week he can drop a morsel about the workings of AEW (and even WWE) that gets people talking.
Social media platforms are drama farms...wrestling is a drama farm...look at how well turning real life situations into angles have worked historically. Just tell the fans that Punk is going to do this on every show he's on bit by bit and you have a segment in the ratings that'll do crazy numbers while having the IWC buzzing non stop. The worst that comes out of it is that Punk burns his bridges with AEW...doubt he cares much about that.
I don't think that utilizing the backstage drama of another promotion would work to boost viewership. AEW has done that a lot yet their shows rarely break past 900k.
He should go heel. We've had the babyface run already and he is much better as a heel. Nobody is quite ready yet to take over from Reigns as top heel and Punk will be a nice stop gap until someone like Gunther or Priest are ready.

I think it’s more of a case of having very limited time and no idea how the crowd was going to react until he already burned through half of his time. Had a bullet point structure to it, for sure.
Promo was a watered down version of his AEW return promo. No energy. No passion. Not believable
Poor Cody Rhodes he just can't get the fuck away from Punk. You know in Cody's last Aew promo he talked about how he actually did everything Punk claimed he wanted in that pipe bomb. Now Cody went to WWE to get the spotlight without the responsibility and to finally win the Universal Championship. Now Punk is gonna slide in and take it from him.
