Basically thought the same. Mainly her plan is: absorb powerful blood echoes and avoid the Ascension of a new great one. Hence the hunters existence. They hunt beasts and kin, a sign of great one presence, are sent to stop mergo's ascension so that the moon presence can stay at the top of the food chain, then the echoes are given to the moon presence.

Excellent design, one of my favourites. Even though her fight is easy, it has deep meaning - it is a moment of a revenge for our hunter, a living weapon puppeteered by the Presence, which has now turned against their master. And it turns out Flora is unable to stop its own creation. The fight gets much more satisfying if you consider its lore implications, especially apparent when she uses the attack which leaves you at 1 HP - even her ultimate move can't EVER kill you, and using the rally you can heal before she even recovers from the attack. Perfect design.
And also, consider the terryfying soundtrack, which starts as a version of the Hunter's Dream. It turns into something nightmarish, and it is not meant to symbolize that your character is afraid - it's the Presence that is terrified of you
It is even crazier when you realize that that 1 hp attack is supposed to insta-kill you, the only reason you survive it is due to the umbilical cords you ate. You can still see this if you have a co-op player who didn't eat the cords get hit by the attack, or if another boss gets hit by it (it can take out even OoK and Laurence in one hit).
The Moon Presence always seemed like it was wounded in a previous fight with how much bone is exposed, or perhaps became malformed as it grew (like its disproportionately sized wings), being too damaged to physically fight well. It has some of the strongest magical powers, but has lost its body on the road there, ironically acting like a beast.
I dunno I always interpreted its damaged state as it being not yet complete, like we forcefully pulled out a baby out of its womb before its organs were properly formed
This is a WONDERFUL art reference for people who want to draw fanart of this boss. Also allows to appreciate all of the nifty little details that gets lost during gameplay. Thank you!
Moon presence definitely have one of my favorite moments in music/audio storytelling. How the melody is the same as in hunter’s dream (and ofc the music change when you have high insight) and how the second phase goes completely bat shit crazy like a horror movie. Love that eldritch horror.
One thing that I realized while playing the game is that the Moon Presence is watching you constantly. At first you think its just the moon, and it's there because most of the game takes place at dusk/night, but then you notice it behaves weirdly... it appears really prominently in several important places, like just before you fight Rom, or shines a light on important objects, like where you find the Rune Workshop Tool. Sometimes it's in front of the clouds, like an object floating in the sky instead of being a real celestial body. And it doesn't just change color as you progress, but shape too. It gets bigger. During the ascent in Mergo's Loft it's HUGE, and it keeps moving around weirdly. By the time you fight Mergo's Wet Nurse it's peeking from the border of the arena instead of above it, like it's a place where it just can't reach...
That's literally the point. Mensis' ritual called the Moon, as she's looking for a child, closer in the Nightmare than in reality but always there, covered by Rom until we slay the poor spider.
Can you make a video like this taking a closer look at Mergo's Wet Nurse? She's jam packed with so much detail, but you can barely see any of it during the in-game battle.
my favorite part of this boss and other in bloodborne are its nods to medical research, such as the main aorta, the base-like connection for all major arteries in the human body. In other words, its a blood circulatory system anthropomorphized.
@loomingmoon4682 Thank you for inquiring. I say this because I'm judging cosmic horror off of lovecraftian/eldritch standards. Something so weird, so out there, that the normal human mind can't really comprehend it, lest you go insane.. and Ebrietas fits that best for me. It's so weird looking, unnatural, yet kind of beautiful in its own way. Don't get me wrong, the game is full of Lovecraft references and creatures of the type, but as far as Cosmic Horror goes, Ebrietas fits the bill better than anyone for me. This is only my opinion, though, as similar arguments could be made for a host of the creatures in Bloodborne. I'd like to know what your opinion is on the subject as well. Thanks for your time :)
As the "tentacles" grow the main body deteriorates. They don't look like tentacles anymore. More like a squid or overgrown slugs. Are they feeding on the main body (which would be something like ebtietas?)
It's so interesting how its body has the four wings and overly jaw-like ribcage of the *_Dark Souls_* Gaping Dragon with tail spikes reminiscent of the Gargoyles. The Fluorescent Flower enemies have a similar body design, and when they're defeated, that part of their body gets sucked away into a vortex just leading behind a weird little tentacled head, which is VERY similar to the unused version of the Moon Presence boss being deft disconnected from its Gaping Draconic body, and those same tentacles being massive with just viscera of faces growing out from the wound.
Moon Presence: How dare you bite the hand that frenzies! Unused Moon Presence: Doooo... yoooou... haaaave... gaaames... oooon... yoooour... phoooone...
It's good to be able to see what these bosses really look like they're moving so fast and you really don't have time to stop and look at them LOL thanks for doing this and other bosses😮😅
The wings are very interesting. Almost reminds me of the unused demons found in the games files. If it ever gets a remaster, and this is cope, but I hope unrealized bosses like the corporeal moon presence or that wolf thing get some love. That or even just a book of the concepts and intentions. Issue is I know Miyazaki doesn’t like revisiting old games. :(
@@Nightmare-pj4fg Very fitting since Moon Presence's Japanese name is "Moon Demon", in a setting filled with Eldritch beings, only Moon Presence got the title of demon, always wondered about this implication.
@@raydhen8840I can see why the other old ones would demonize the moon presence. Imagine struggling with fertility for millennia and finally being able to get ahold of a child and out of nowhere the moon gives some homeless man a gun, a dose of immortality and sends him to kill the child.
Something that Bloodborne does great is how, despite it being completely alien, it has an odd sense of beauty to it. Cosmic horror often plays off a sort of “divinity”, and many designers don’t take that aspect into account when creating a beast of cosmic horror. There should be something almost ethereal and hauntingly beautiful about a god beyond our comprehension.
I absolutely love the one-shot attack it does. From what I heard, it's coded to one-hit kill literally everything in the game, including the player. But eating the three umbilical cords makes it so that you survive the attack with 1 HP. You are now it's equal.
I find it interesting that the standard Moon Presence appears to be disemboweled, while the unused Moon Presence seemingly has the innards the other form lacks. It's like the Moon Presence was split into separate entities -- one represents the "outer" sections of the body, the other represents the "core", and both are miserably maimed by this situation. The latter form's five tendrils are reminiscent of a hand too.
Well, it has rougher, unfinished texture work, which makes it appear like something you're not supposed to look at. It's also just more malformed overall, to the point it looks like it's controlled by the huge tentacles growing out its back rather than the main body, like a living cancerous mass.
Moon Presence, Flora, Oedon -- the same Great One. "Human or no, the oozing blood is a medium of the highest grade, and the essence of the formless Great One, Oedon. Both Oedon, and his inadvertent worshippers, surreptitiously seek the precious blood". That's exactly what Moon Presence do. Also, this explains why The Moon Presence care about Mergo and Mensis ritual.
The Moon Presence always seemed like the middle ground between man, beast, and Great One in shape and abilities. Plus, the red moon does increase the number of beasts, so perhaps the Moon Presence has an affinity towards beasthood.
I think that the Great One and the Beast are simply different states of mind experienced by humans, influenced by infected blood and insight. Therefore one can adopt traits of both, meaning the Moon Presence can behave like a beast
I think it's by design. When the blood moon (in this case a living Great One) descends, people that used the Church's healing blood turn into beasts at a higher rate, i.e. people turn into werewolves when the full moon is out. It's a subversion of the classic werewolf mythology, blended with cosmic horror elements.
Well, it's not so surprising as Beast, Kin and Great Ones are on the same scale of evolution. Church's ultimate goal was to ascend to Great Ones, but while Willem wanted to ascend remaining human, Lawrence understood that blood and mind must go hand in hand.
You know, for a game that has such a focus on eyes, "eyes being on the inside" and (in)sight being heavily linked to ascension and higher understanding, it's unusual that the Moon Presence is entirely absent of them.
i recognize im in the minority of people here, but personally i never interpreted the moon presence as evil or malicious just because we have a boss fight with it. we have next to zero information on it outside of two cutscenes and one fight, and a lot of interpretations of its motives are just that, interpretations. the great ones are weird and inherently beyond mortal mindsets, so there are any number of potential explanations for its behavior, and i dont think it attacking us in the squid ending is enough to attribute evil, or maliciousness to it
I love it's boss song as it represents it and the stage well. Haunting but weirdly beautiful. Also, I like to pretend(not in a headcanon or theory, just something for fun) that the unused look is the Moon Presence in a larval/pupa state of sorts. Like all the gross added flesh it has not molted off yet and is piling on and final/in game look is like a butterfly. Given how moths/butterflies become soup in their cocoons, it felt right in a weird way. Hope someone will be able to touch up the textures and such for the unused model, like how The Great One beast had it.
The Moon Presence's true form. Or to be more precise, her original physical form. Poor Flora. Too bad we didn't finish her for good but perhaps this is an opportunity for a potential sequel?
I think the possible implications of this design are fascinating! For the longest time I thought the moon presence was fundamentally different from the other elder goda in-game, but in actuality I think they might all be originally human or some of them were originally human
When you realize that the rib cage area is open and emptied, meant for the hunter who has gathered the great ones blood echoes to merge with the Great One Flora
The 21 head tentacles is pretty cool what if the chalice dungeons are just the moons personal dreams it can manifest or something o that ilk, training you with monsters it’s already claimed or something like that
While being able to kill something like the moon presence with a sword completely misses the point of lovecraft, I really enjoy this alternative take where these "higher lifeforms" are still just lifeforms that live and bleed. A rat could still kill you by pulling the trigger on a gun.
Notice how its 'mouth' or whatever is covered in blood, almost like the blood echoes you've been collecting have been sort of funneled to the Moon Presence? Perhaps it desires the blood of other Great Ones?
I think the main goal was to prevent oedon to have a child due to mergo in order to prevent ascension of anyone else, so it could be also as a way to exploit the beastly idiocy of yharnam. The reason why other bosses like the orphan of kos are optional is due to kos being dead and not really having a physical child at this point, and ebrietas is pretty much left in the dust and the moon pesencecan just cause another hunt to kill it should it be a true great one. The hunter's dream is the perfect tool to prevent curious insane folks from ascension. The moon presence may get echoes while also preventing ascension though but not it's main priority with our hunter. And the other thing is that the moon presence will be in a safe zone not hunted for anything: but able to hunt and kill any other great one child. As the blood on him; maybe.
Unused moon presence was probably a phase 2, on account that its legs are pulp like father Laurence. Glad they found a use for that cool concept eventually, I’d just prefer it without the magma hemorrhage/Taco Bell aftermath.
I appreciate the inclusion of the cut MP boss. I always wondered what the difference truly was and what led to the newly designed MP. Was it a two phase fight? Was it something to do with how many Umbilicals you taken? Like if you got 3/4 you got the cut chalice version but if you managed to get 4/4 you get the actual fully realized MP fight? So many questions that make this game so brilliant the longer they are unanswered.
Probably a hot take, but the unused MP model would've been a cool Phase 2 transformation. Could've made the fight a bit more interesting. The only other times we see a physical transition/transformation are in the DLC with Ludwig, and with Laurence in particular.
I theorize that the Moon Presence is Humanity’s Mother, there isnt much evidence in game to suggest this except for the Art book which shows she has messengers cloaked on her body. This in my opinion explains the tone of the Hunter’s Dream, it isn’t a sanctuary its a baby’s cradle. You can see statues of messenger’s getting more animal like traits and becoming more refined in the Chalice Dungeons. So maybe a union between Flora and Odeon led to the evolution of modern life, but as we are born of the blood, made men by the Blood, we are also undone by the Blood. I think our time in Yharnam may be the Moon Presence’s way of protecting humanity. May not be purely benevolent but it should be mentioned in the “Bad,” Ending where we take Gehrman’s place we are told that we were “Enraptured,” by the Moon Presence. Implying we end up agreeing or coming to agree with the Moon Presence. I don’t think it’s a malicious entity, considering its the other Great One thats had this much contact with us versus Ebritas. Though this is all just a theory and speculation, one of the many reasons I love Bloodborne.
They chose right - the faster version of moon presence is far more majestic at the openning of the fight. And what's interesing for me - I've never seen these teeth! It looks like they did a faster version of Gaping Dragon from DS1
Unused moon presence kinda looks like an eyeball with the nerves and everything. Cord of the EYE Why are there only 3rds of cords? What is that about? An alusion to trimesters?

Last one feels like a midway between orphan and presence
Oh my god, I'm so happy we didn't get the unused one, it looks so... patheticly weak?
That day, micheal zaki decided to cook a 3 michelin stars dish
You know, for a game that has such a focus on eyes, "eyes being on the inside" and (in)sight being heavily linked to ascension and higher understanding, it's unusual that the Moon Presence is entirely absent of them.
I'm glad we got the moon princess we got. She's fast and vicious as a beast. The unused one seems a bit too aquatic and awkward.
Man, I hate biology class.
Four wings.. it’s a Soulsborne dragon!!
You're such a fuckin' gangster for doing these videos. I absolutely love them.
I never knew she had wings, that’s so cool
damn that unused design would've been sick if it was properly fleshed out, no pun intended
Are we pretending Amygdala doesn't exist then? Fair enough, that is the lore accurate way of dealing with it
Love this boss, so many tentacles and a design with meaning
When I first saw the cut content waking world form model for the Moon Presence, everything clicked.
i recognize im in the minority of people here, but personally i never interpreted the moon presence as evil or malicious just because we have a boss fight with it. we have next to zero information on it outside of two cutscenes and one fight, and a lot of interpretations of its motives are just that, interpretations.
the great ones are weird and inherently beyond mortal mindsets, so there are any number of potential explanations for its behavior, and i dont think it attacking us in the squid ending is enough to attribute evil, or maliciousness to it
I would love to see the design notes of the unused version!
Now the big monsters exponats from museum messmer castle
Squid baby! No idea she had wings
The Moon Presence's true form. Or to be more precise, her original physical form. Poor Flora. Too bad we didn't finish her for good but perhaps this is an opportunity for a potential sequel?
"Cosmic horrors can't be killed." - Some goofy goober
The good hunter after sampling 3 umbilical cords: "allowed me to introduce myself "
I think the possible implications of this design are fascinating! For the longest time I thought the moon presence was fundamentally different from the other elder goda in-game, but in actuality I think they might all be originally human or some of them were originally human
As Stallion said in Words Worth...
Ah yes, John Bloodborne.
What a beautiful monstrosity
Thanks for the video
When you realize that the rib cage area is open and emptied, meant for the hunter who has gathered the great ones blood echoes to merge with the Great One Flora
More Bloodborne. This is awesome
Man, the unused version looks super cool too, maybe could have been used as a phase 2? Get on that modders
The 21 head tentacles is pretty cool what if the chalice dungeons are just the moons personal dreams it can manifest or something o that ilk, training you with monsters it’s already claimed or something like that
Hi Flora
Yo,il goat è qui presente
I never really noticed how cool its model is, I only ever really focused on its head lol
The tentacle head always reminds me of Nyarlathotep
She always looked like a Corrupted Silver Beast. Huh the tail ends look like the frenzy spears and Yharnam's blood spikes.
... hear me out.
Getting a good look at her, she reminds me of Nyarlathotep in design.
Lovecraft would be proud.
Willing to bet the tail configuration is supposed to resemble the circulatory system
While being able to kill something like the moon presence with a sword completely misses the point of lovecraft, I really enjoy this alternative take where these "higher lifeforms" are still just lifeforms that live and bleed. A rat could still kill you by pulling the trigger on a gun.
God all this peak, but I wish the boss fight itself lived up :(
Why does the mesh at 0:55 move as you remove the head tentacles?
"Whrithing mass!"
Moon Presence always reminded me of Manus, Father of The Abyss😲
I still really wanna know what the unused moon presence model would’ve been used for
Notice how its 'mouth' or whatever is covered in blood, almost like the blood echoes you've been collecting have been sort of funneled to the Moon Presence?
Best design in the game
@@aeric_ I think that the cut form was supposed to be the Moon Presence's physical form, while the one we fight in the dream is it's spiritual form
@ oh yeah I almost forgot about that. I gotta look more into that.
🗿🤌🌙
It's kinda cute.
The look of the presence, it seems like she is being reborn similar to the one reborn. Could that be why she wants blood echoes?
Unused moon presence kinda looks like an eyeball with the nerves and everything. Cord of the EYE
Why are there only 3rds of cords? What is that about? An alusion to trimesters?
This thing looks like a mockery of life it´self
By all means it should not be able to function, as it seems to barely have any organs, and yet it writhes and wriggles
Hear me out...
I didn't notice until now how much Moon Presence's tails look like Kaneki's kagune from Tokyo Ghoul
What is that second model?
