But the irony of all the older generations saying the younger generations don't know how to treat people are the ones doing this type of thing is UNREAL. I work at a restaurant and it's so infuriating to tell a customer no because it's your policy and have the manager come out and kiss their ass.

I've known alot more kids who act that way. (Only difference is most stop by the time they Are 14). Except for the rich kids who never been told no in their life.

It's true. I spent many years in customer service with a large swath of that time in retail and the remainder of it as a server. I'm midway through my 40s, but I look like I'm barely 30. Occasionally I still love getting mistaken for being younger than I am, but working in the service industry, these gripey seniors and boomers love to use my youthful appearance as an excuse to be disrespectful or talk down to me. For example, a few years ago right around Thanksgiving I waited on some vegans. The place I worked at is not exactly vegan friendly but I told them I could rearrange a couple of menu items with some substitutions so it wouldn't hit them in the wallet. They didn't like that I wasn't complying with their verbalized request so I decided to maliciously comply. I rang in their entire order separately including their drinks. They were mad when they got a 30 plus dollar check for two breakfasts and two coffee. Naturally, they asked to speak to the manager and they griped for about 15 minutes until the manager did exactly what I had planned to do originally. She voided their order then used my original idea and rang it in as a don't make. The wife was complaining as she was leaving about how she would never come back there for breakfast ever again. I shouted back: "You promise?” My former manager gave me the mom scowl then asked me to give my side of the story. I explained everything as it had transpired. My regulars who were sitting across from that insufferable couple heard everything and vouched for me. No further discussion, no write-up, no disciplinary action. That was it. My former manager is a bit prickly, but she's been in the business since her children were little and she's a grandmother now. She knew when people were trying to run a scam.

Customer service/retail people _really_ deserve more respect. They work their asses off for pennies on the hour, and for what? We treat our customer and retail workers _so_ horribly, it honestly makes me feel ashamed to be a human being most of the time when I hear any one of these kinds of stories.

I love my manager because I was the only cashier in my area and had a line and no one was available to help. Lady comes up with a basket full of items and I noticed one item didn't have a barcode or tag and told her she will have to get another one, which was not too far away. She proceeds to tell me to get it, and got angry when I told her I could not leave my register. Literally took less than two minutes and she even said she will take the one with the tag as "it looked better". She called to complain, my manager was so busy she basically told the woman she did not have time and put her on hold. Lady hung up.

I enjoy messing with Karens whenever I encounter them, somehow I have the ability to make them shut up really quickly but my favorite encounter was after my dad had a stroke and I was getting stuff from the supermarket for him. Karen: thinks I'm a worker in the store, calls me fat for getting a bunch of coca cola bottles, insults me, etc. Me: point out that 1. I'm clearly a customer and not even wearing anything that remotely resembles the supermarket uniform, 2. all the coca cola I was getting was actually Coke No Sugar (Coke Zero), 3. the Coke No Sugar was for my father who had recently had a stroke, 4. she isn't exactly one to talk when calling people fat since her cart was filled to the brim with chocolate and 5. if she tries to lie to the workers that I assaulted her or anything, the several witnesses in the aisle and the security cameras pointed down the aisle would all prove she's full of shit.

Retail and food service workers work significantly harder than any office worker I've ever met including myself, and this Karen behavior is becoming more and more common, as well as more and more risky because they're getting more entitled and confident and *violent*. They also know most managers just want to placate them and won't take the employee's side. They know corporations only care about the customers and don't gave half a single fuck for their employees.
So it *really* pisses me off when people look down on retail and food service employees. They're almost always paid the absolute minimum wage, have to put up with back-breaking labor that's almost never actually part of their job description, shit benefits if any at all, horrible customers that hate them for doing their jobs, horrible bosses that hate them if they refuse to cut corners and commit unethical or illegal acts to make their numbers look better, all day, every day. They deserve a living fucking wage for all the shit they have to go through. They do the dirty work no one wants to do.
Source: used to work food service full-time as a pizza delivery driver for a couple years and it was one of the darkest periods of my life. Cried in my car more times than I can count, my life was threatened several times, and on top of all that my paychecks were like $500 every 2 weeks because drivers get tipped wage even thought 90% of people don't tip at all, and the highest tip I ever saw was $5. That's just how the US is - the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I'm lucky to have an office job now. Still not a livable wage but at least I'm not crying all the time.

One time when I worked retail, I was running the cash register. This lady and her older-looking daughter (maybe like 18 or so?) brought up a couple of items, and before I could even say hello, she immediately started raising her voice at me. She went into an irate spiel and demanded that I call down the store manager... all because some other customer bumped into her daughter by accident and just walked away without apologizing.
I called down the manager. After this lady started raising her voice at him and explained what happened, he just straight up told her to leave because she's being a nuisance. She said "You just lost yourself a well-paying customer!" all while walking out with one of the items (less than $1) without paying for it. Neither of us cared.
I don't miss working in customer service.

I once worked at a salon grade shampoo store, and we sold nail polish. I was 22 at the time, but many customers thought I was 16. This one woman walks in wearing luxury fashion and she ends up dropping a bottle of red nail polish and it shatters everywhere. It got all over her pants and shoes, and she was trying to blame me for it, and refused to leave unless I paid her $200 for the jeans and $600 for the shoes. She kept telling me she was going to ruin me and take me specifically, to court. I was the only one at the store at the time, and she refused to leave until I paid her. I told her the reason I couldn't, and I was only making like $8 an hour anyway, but she wanted me to pay it, not corporate. I was no where near her when she decided to grab a handful of nail polish, dropping one. She finally left when her teenage daughter comes into the store to get her. The next day, she decides to bring my boss an invoice for her jeans, boots, and an extra $100 requested, for her distress. She told my boss to ask me to sign the invoice when I come in next, so I know how much I cost her. She claimed she would be back for it in a few days to pick up the invoice with my signature, that is supposed to admit my guilt. I never signed it and she never came back for it either. I quit a few months later (unrelated), but I was so young and naive that I let it stress me out for the next six months. I was afraid one day a lawyer would come up to me and tell me I've 'been served'. All because some rich lady got embarrassed at the mall.

I deal with Karen and Kevin regularly. I work for the passport office, so the number of people who order a passport is 4 weeks before travel 🙃. Don't check if the time frame is 10 weeks. Then complain that the passport isn't ready in time. Well, always check how long it's taking to get the thing printed. 🙄. The other ones are where people tell the customer that the passport will be printed in a week. Turned out they hadn't sent in the docs we need. I tell them the truth they get angry that no one else told them. Maybe the other agents just want the off the phone.

I used to work at the airport. Once we had a delay of an hour. While its not a perfect system, we did have a text message/email that went out to passengers who signed up to be notified of delays. Two ladies came to check in and they were very upset to find out the flight was delayed.
"Why didn't anyone call us! I already hate getting to the airport early, now I have to wait a whole hour!"
So I told them that we did send out messages, if they had opted in for those. I was very sorry that they didn't recieve it, but in the future, this is what they could do to be notified by text.
    "Oh, I don't have a cell phone."
"Okay, well you can also opt in by email too"
"I don't have an email account,"
Normally I keep my comments to myself, but I was so shocked I just outright blurted out "Well, I am afraid if we sent it by messenger pidgeon, it wouldn't have arrived in time." Weirdly, they didn't get mad. I think my pointing out the obvious actually made them realize they were being ridiculous, becuase the rest of the check in went without issue. People are weird.

In a bustling city, somewhere late 2016, there was a couple named Morgan and Freddy who found themselves embroiled in a heated argument on a bus. Morgan, being nine years older than Freddy, had always been plagued by jealousy, which often led to misunderstandings and tension between them.
On this particular day, as the bus rumbled along its route, a man named Deek took a seat on the other side of the aisle. Deek had a rather unique appearance, with a masculine physique but a feminine tone of voice. Though he identified as a straight male, his appearance often led to misconceptions.
As fate would have it, Deek noticed Freddy engrossed in watching his favorite pastor on a tablet device. With a mischievous smile, Deek called out to Freddy, "Hey there! I see you're watching my favorite pastor too!" His intention was to establish a connection with Freddy, based on their shared interest in the sermon. However, this innocent gesture would soon ignite a series of misunderstandings and conflicts.
Morgan, caught off guard by Deek's appearance, mistook him for a woman. Offended, Deek quickly corrected her, asserting his identity as a real male. Deek begged Freddy to correct his mother that he’s actually a male and shows a bit of the size of his private part from his pants. Sensing the growing hostility, Freddy attempted to defuse the situation by explaining to Deek that Morgan is not his mother but his girlfriend. Unfortunately, this only served to fuel the fire of their argument.
Morgan, feeling physically judged and misunderstood, lashed out at Deek, accusing him of making assumptions based on her appearance . She went so far as to predict his damnation, claiming he would go to hell. The argument continued unabated, with neither party willing to back down.
As the bus journey continued, the other passengers grew increasingly uncomfortable with the escalating confrontation taking place before them. Voices were raised, tempers flared, and the air grew thick with tension. The incessant bickering of Morgan and Deek seemed to drown out all other sounds on the bus, leaving an uncomfortable atmosphere in its wake.
Finally, Deek, realizing the toll this toxic relationship was taking on Freddy, mustered the courage to deliver a candid truth. He turned to Freddy and bluntly stated that he deserved someone his own age, someone who was secure in herself and their relationship. Freddy, caught off guard by Deek's honesty, began to question his own happiness.
Morgan, feeling her control slipping away, was consumed by anger. In a fit of rage, she almost threw Freddy's tablet at Deek, narrowly missing him. The fight continued, with the bus passengers growing increasingly disturbed by the chaos unfolding before them.
The bus ride, which had started as a simple commute for the passengers, had turned into a battleground of emotions and misunderstandings. The argument seemed to have no end in sight, leaving everyone involved feeling drained and helpless.
As the bus finally reached its destination, the passengers filed out, eager to escape the toxic atmosphere that had plagued their journey. Morgan and Freddy were left in the aftermath of their argument, forced to confront the cracks in their relationship.
Sometimes, life presents us with situations that reveal the true nature of our relationships. Morgan and Freddy, now faced with the consequences of their jealousy and insecurities, had a choice to make. Somehow ended things between Freddy and Morgan.
One thing was clear the bus ride had served as a wake-up call, a catalyst for change that neither of them could ignore.

While I was working as a shift supervisor for Wendy's, a guy came in, ordered one sandwich and drink, sat down with his... lady friend (we suspected she might be collecting a paycheck, so to speak) and then came back up complaining that the burger was cold. Said we could make another one, and he hands me the drink lid, with just the middle bite of the sandwich left on it.
Now normally, we would simply tell people that they can't eat the food then expect it refunded or remade, but this guy thought he had it all figured out, and was being a snarky arsehole, holding up my workers time.
I took his bite of sandwich to the back, threw it out, made a new sandwich, cut out the middle bite, put it on a side lid, and presented it to him at the front. He was NOT happy.
I explained that he was very obviously and blatantly trying to rip off the store, and I was not having it. He could take his bite of sandwich that was now fresh and hot and leave, or leave without it. When he raised his voice, I told him that he was now being trespassed from the location and to get out immediately, or we would call the police. His lady friend was already moving when we said "trespassed"
Told, and showed, my GM the video in the morning. She laughed her arse off.
The only better one was when a group drunk of drunk college frats showed up asking for the manager because we should comp them food for being on "local sports team". I spun in a circle and said, "I'm the manager, can I help you? What's this about?". They left.

Ok. This is long but had to share. Years ago when I worked at a Kinkos, a Karen came in to pick up her order. Now some BG info that is important- When orders were completed, they were packaged and put on a shelf under the counter. Each shelf was labeled with a Letter and a number, i.e. A-1, A-2. The shelf number was entered in the POS system under customer name so when the customer came in, we looked up their name and would see where their order was shelved. It was not unusual for the system to say 1 thing and their job to be on a different shelf, So back to Karen...She comes in and I lo0ok up her name and go to pull her order out of the shelf the POS system listed it was in and it was not there. I looked on the quality check table incase it had not been shelved yet and not there. Asked the Project coordinator if it was completed. They said yes. It was according to the production report. So i start looking in all the shelves for her order. Karen is complaining to her companion about how much she hates having to deal with "this place" and how everyone that works here "is stupid". Karen then tells me that if I lost her originals, she will KILL ME. She literally said she would kill me to my face. I stopped looking for her order, turned around and went to my managers office and said that loudly so she would hear that I will no longer help this customer as she threatened to kill me and that he better go help her and that he needs to tell her that she made a treat on my life over PAPER with toner on it and that I want to call the police on her. My useless manager helped her. Her job was found and I was told that if I called the police, I would be fired. I was young and needed the job and was transferring to another location in 2 weeks, so I stayed and didnt call the police. I did refuse to help the customer who was still allowed to come in the store. She came in one night where I was the only employee working. She left without getting anything done as I refused to help her, even refused to speak to her and called corporate in front of her explaining that I was not helping her and what should I do as I am only one there. The person on the phone told me to hand her the phone (cordless) and they told her I had the right to refuse service and due to her interaction with me previous, they were not going t insist that I help her and that she needed to leave and return in the morning for help. If she did not leave or gave me any problems, they instructed me to call the police. She threw the phone at me and stormed of calling me every name in the book as she left. I saw her in town once about a month after that and when she saw me, I told her to eat a dick. Felt good to do so.

I called the manager. She was about five foot and hunched over. He was well over six foot tall and positively hulking. That didn’t last long. The problem is that management and corporate don’t want to lose the custom. If all retailers stood their ground and didn’t bow down to the customer is always right maxim then they wouldn’t get away with it. Managers should stick up for their employees and their business more. When I was a manager I always stuck up for my employee whether to a customer or higher management. I would chew them out and threaten dismissal in private, but no one ever got to that other than me. Many stock answer when I was told by a Karen the customer is always right was ‘ not in here you want that nonsense go next door’ only one person ever called corporate I told them the same and if they didn’t like it then I would close up and go home taking my staff with me. Area manager came we had words but in the end he just left me to do my thing, don’t know what he told corporate but I left on my terms 2 years later. Yeah stick up for Staff and don’t get pushed around.

At my store we aren’t even allowed to defend ourselves if a customer goes apeshit. I have a perfect example, unfortunately it does involve race. The Karen was a black female, my co-worker was a Hispanic female. Another thing is our store has exclusive deals but you have to clip the coupon online and enter your phone number, and there is a limit of 5 items under that coupon per week.
cw had already had a rough day, and was already brought to the back by a manager to be talked to about telling a customer to leave for being horrendous earlier (we’re not even allowed to shoo people away politely if they’re being seriously aggressive.) cw was checking out the Karen. The Karen had put sausage deal, and when cw rang her up, the Karen got aggressive asking why the deal wasn’t there. Cw explains they had to clip the coupon online and enter their phone number. Karen gets upset, and surprise surprise like every other black Karen (emphasis on “Karen”) she berates CW and says “that’s racist” while being racist towards cw, making her desperately call out for security or a manager because she is being verbally assaulted. Manager comes down (she is white) and gets the same aggression. After a few minutes Karen is told to leave, cw is sent to lunch early and is told to work the rest of her shift even though she is in tears. This isn’t the first time anyone has been abhorrent towards her. She really tries to have patience with customers but every week there’s at least one that sends her home crying.

We're no different from the rest of you in that we are trying really hard not to simply jump the counter and beat the Karen to death with our bare hands. The only satisfaction is sending them away with nothing.
The worst one was actually a Kyle. This guy placed an order on his credit card. Then he called back and changed the order. Because of the way credit cards worked at the time, there were now two separate pre-approvals on his card. This resulted in the card being maxed, i.e. not working when he tried it at another place. He called us and demanded "his money back." We told him we don't have his money, it's locked in pre-approval by the issuing bank. He was totally unable to understand this and demanded a full refund again. We told him we can cancel the order but the pre-approvals won't wash out until tomorrow. Well that's not good enough, we owe him cash out of the register right now. I said sorry, that isn't going to happen. Listen, he's gonna call the owner right now, and by the time he's done, the owner is going to get down on his knees, beg forgiveness with tears in his eyes, pay the dude double the value of both approvals immediately in cash out of his own pocket, and offer a BJ for his trouble. I told him he's not getting the owner's number. This is when he really started in, he's gonna call the cops, lawyers, the FBI, the mayor, the Better Business Bureau, I was honestly zoning out at this point but I'm pretty sure he threatened to call the President of the United States. I would be fired, everyone would be fired, the place would go into bankruptcy trying to pay what he'd take from us in court, he'd own the bank that issued his card by the time he was done with them, and so on, and so forth. This is very much a shortened version of his rant, and I'm using reasonable grammar and sentence structure, which this idiot definitely was not. I do not exaggerate when I say I was on the phone with him for over thirty minutes. He said he was coming to the store and we better "have my money when I get there!" So he rolled up a few minutes later and I tell you what, he looked exactly like you'd imagine. If aliens were to kidnap this particular specimen of anemic, chinless, dirty, skinny, slovenly, slack-jawed trailer trash as a representative sample of earthlings, they'd declare our species unworthy and blow up the planet. So the guy ran his mouth for about a half hour in person, all the same crap he said over the phone, then finally left when it was clear he wasn't getting cash. A few minutes later, the phone rang, and we did the whole entire thirty minute conversation again. Again, it ended with him saying we better have cash when he arrives. A few minutes later, he rolled up again, and did the entire thirty minute spiel AGAIN. To get rid of him, we had to arrange a conference call with us, him, and the bank. The bank rep told him very nearly word-for-word what we had told him at the beginning regarding pre-approvals. The call ended and he just turned and slunk off, still cussing us out under his breath.
My favorite is another Kyle. This dude just goes completely apeshit on me, I don't remember what for but I remember it was less than nothing, some trifle a reasonable person wouldn't even mention, definitely not worth any kind of discount, like the employee who handed him his food forgot to say thank you or something. It's bad service, his order should be free, his day is ruined, is this the example we set in front of his son (who looks embarrassed to be there, even more so to be pulled into it, and most embarrassed of all to have such a dipshit for a dad in the first place), and blah de fucking blah. I won't give him the owner's number, but I hand him a menu so he'll have the email address. I tell him the company president reads every email from customers. He snatches the menu and storms out. I wasn't lying. I do read every email from customers. I got rid of him quicker than if I had told him who I was, plus I got to compose a leisurely and exceptionally barbed reply to his email.

Many of the millennials who spent their young adult life in retail are now old enough to be managers, and they are not letting Karen’s have the run of warehouse anymore. Mostly because, screw your piss poor attitude demanding free merchandise, and services when they’re some of the biggest money hemorrhaging leeches to most companies. Also, due to many companies losing money due to theft, and higher transportation costs. They aren’t putting up with abusers who harass free products out of their pocket.

I drive for a large shipping company with brown trucks. I had this steady route in a very upscale area. Most of the customers on the route were really cool. I had a couple of Karens, though. I had this one who would order shit, and ask what was in the box. I would always reply: “I didn’t pack it and I forgot my x-ray glasses.” She was never amused. One day she must have gotten a wild hair across her ass as she started demanding that I open the box, assemble the item, and remove & cart away the old item. I told her that I only deliver. The company does not assemble or unpack. She went ape, and I just walked back to the truck, and left. The next day she had a call tag for me to pick up the item for return. I got to her house, and she points to the cabinet that was now unboxed and assembled. I told her that I can’t take the item without it being properly boxed and labeled. She pointed to a broken down box and tape and told me “There you go, box it up.” I thought her head was going to explode when I told her “No. Not my job.” She called customer service, made a huge stink, and a supervisor and a division manager went to her house the next day to get the box. It still wasn’t boxed, so they told her the same thing I told her. She really went off the deep end, and she wound up getting “black balled” from ever getting deliveries to her house for ever. All of her deliveries wound up going to a UPS Store near her house and she had to and go and pick up her stuff there. All her neighbors hated her too. She tried to get me fired, but it’s a union job. Aside from the cardinal sins; (fighting, stealing, drinking, doing drugs, not reporting an accident, of disobeying a direct work order..) It’s nearly impossible to get canned with out just cause.

There was a sign posted in back of the counter advising customers of the extra charge to have this done. A woman got her 10 pound box of fish cleaned, but as she went to the front to check out, made a huge scene about the extra charge. We were leaving at the time so we didn't hear the result - I'm sure she would have had to pay the extra charge or go home without the fish! Lol. I used to work at a 24 hour restaurant and some customers, especially just after the first of every month, would want you to kiss their ass for a dollar they were so picky about how they wanted their food made!
