A valve adjustment on these is about as easy as it gets, so any ticking fix should start there imo. seat off, tank off, covers off, adjust....then reverse. honestly that simple. Don't forget to do the cam chain tensioner fix, SUPER IMPORTANT for the older(15k+ miles) LS650's. Please don't risk the damage, not worth it for such an easy fix)
Hey Pete, my wife did the exact same thing except for her riding her own bike. There I was picking up a touring Harley. Best decision we ever made. We sooo enjoy our time together on the bike. Enjoy the miles!!!
The best thing to do is pick up a small bike and practice, practice and more practice. Learn your clutch friction zone and how to use your brakes. You're starting out the right way. Most people will buy a big bike and be scared to death to stop or turn. Don't get out of your comfort zone. DO NOT LET ANYONE TALK YOU INTO SOMETHING YOUR NOT GOOD WITH... Just some good advice from a guy that's been riding for 50 years.. Be a sponge and soak in everything you can about riding.
I always liked the look of the intruder/boulevards. I had a 750 intruder and it was light and nice looking, then I bought the S83 (1400) and that was a torque monster. I could easily short shift it and cruise around with minimal shifting required. I always wanted to turn it into a bobber.
Im 100% brand new to motorcycles and i have the exact same red 97 savage. After about 10 hours of practice im already staring feel pegs drag and have no problems with u turns in controlled situations. I think its a great bike!
Cam chain adjuster is a know problem on that engine. Could be the cam tensioner has failed. You got it looking a lot cooler . I’m too old to be riding without a suspension on the rear now lol. I ride that bike and I won’t be able to walk for a week after lol
Those old sausages are generally darn good bikes, I know of 1 with over 100000km and the engine had never been touched other than valve adjustments. Not great sound quality over my phone but sounded timing chain to me, not a bad job to change it and the chain guides.
I put 67,500 on my 96 Honda vt 500...I'm 250 lbs...lol. Catch is, it had 27,000 in it when I bought it... never Rebuilt ANYTHING.. I've got an 05 vtx 1800 with 71,972 on it... rebuilt the motor for big bore kit in 2009... Going strong.....
Hey I had all kinds of bikes from lots of duel sports to 900 & 1000 cc bikes and 42 years on bikes . I sold mine a few years ago and at 61 years old I’m looks at this type of bike . I can’t get in trouble with too much speed and it’s lite weight. And I just want to just cruise around
I'm very experienced bike rider .. over 50 years of bike riding. I tell you this so that you might suppose what I suggest has some credibility. Man, never sell those Suzuki 650 Savages. They are lifetime treasures. Now that I'm too old for big bikes I wish I had one of those Savages. So much fun, so light, SO much torque, and so inexpensive to maintain. Loved mine and miss it so much.
I know these are considered 'small' bikes in the U.S. but here in Mexico the market is dominated by actually small 125-150 work bikes, so this one really stands out when you see it on the streets. Amazing bike, a 'little giant' here in my country 😁
Straight piped mine, takes a min to adjust carb to stop backfire. It’s fast, lot of torque. Wheelie in 2nd, just crossed 6k miles. Better than my XLH1000. I like it loud
There is one major Problem with the Savages/S40: Timing Chain Tensioners! You should address this issue immediately! It has probably already jumped out. Just look it up in the interwebz! And all the jazz about "Not manly enough, girls bike, whatsoever" I still call BS. Back in the days guys drove bikes with 20-25HP max and they were badass ;)
Hey, I've had two of these myself! Nothing wrong with a guy riding them! They are a great motorcycle. Nimble as h3ll & light weight. Gotta love em for just scooting around. Ride mine more than my bmw!
Back in 87, I had just sold my GS550EF and was in to peruse the GS1150EF (the shop had a slightly used 86 that I bought). But way back then is when I first saw the Savage. Trippy lil bike. 650 single cylinder! What most struck me tho, was the incredibly low seat height. Even my short buddy could easily walk the bike while seated. Weights all seemed decent, sounded good, etc. But like I said I was upgrading from a 550 crotch rocket to an 1150, so the 650 lil thumper wasn’t on my list. I did see the bike as having huge potential for customization tho. I was surprised to not see more of them being sold.
My wife had a 2011, S40 and it was a great bike. She hardly rode it, and I rotated the fuel and did more oil changes on it than I could count… and that was from it just sitting around. We sold it for $3500 and didn’t even have 4000km on it. Great little bikes, but the carb on it can be a finicky bitch.
You made a mistake lol after about a mile of riding u will be hooked!! I myself have a heritage softtail 2003 it is a awesome feeling cruising down the hi way take your time and be safe get to know the bike and watch for idiot drivers!!! Awesome video brother rubber side down!!!!
Could be the cam chain adjuster. Easy fix if there’s been no damage. The rear fender and muffler are both amazingly heavy, but it’s difficult to muffle such a big single. BTW, check out the Ryca Motors hardtail version of the S40.
There both great looking bikes you could put you a long springer front end on the one for you it would be easy to turn it into a nice chopper like the old 650 triumphs
The engine noise on the red one is probably from the cam chain adjuster. I'd research and check it ASAP as it WILL fail. It will also eventually be an issue on the blue one. I'd probably also upgrade the OEM petcock with a Yamaha Raptor unit. They, too, will fail. Also, run only pure gas: no shit E10. TWD
dont let anybody tell you what kind if bike is "manly" or good for a beginner. I myself went for a naked bike but a 650 savage certainly is an excellent option. Very simply and easy enough to ride. Not trying to shit on harley but if i were to buy a 90s bike it would be japanese for sure. Im looking to buy a Skyteam Skymax 160 replica of Honda DAX. Around 80kgs ready to go and a wheelbase of 1000mm just screams fun. Put some nobby tires on and go nuts on gravel roads ... also one hell wheele machine
i Just bought one too. just under 3,000 Canadian. arriving on Sunday. is it possible to make the pegs like a highway bike, chopper look. i feel im sitting bit too upright on it. im 5'6 have 33 in inseam legs. and yes, a girl!! LOL i had a chopper.. 300cc. so this is great for me, power wise. i was stretched out.. and really u have to remove the tank, for the spark plug? OMG.
lol yeah bit of a pain in the butt to change the spark plug but not too bad..and yeah they are great bikes!! I'm not sure if anyone sells highway bars or forward controls for these bikes but I'd think some company out there does...but even someone handy with the tools and a case of beer should be able to figure something out lol 🍻
That windscreen was WAY too high, should only be about a finger between the shield and where it's near the headlight. We don't have much choice in FL, seasonal "love bugs" are crazy down here, so part of the year, most of us that don't enjoy spending hours washing dead black sticky goop from dead bugs off ourselves, use a windscreen.
Man, it's already a rough ride, can't imagine them being a hardtail, you could always go back to preload short shocks, to have some kind of suspension, and better traction...yes, you completely destroy having proper traction when you hardtail a bike.
🤣haha yeah we'll I mean every flat surface in a shop usually becomes a work bench at some point but if ya check out part 2 to this video you'll see that I cleaned the lift off and put the bike on it! cheers 🍻

My wife and I did the same thing this year!!! It’s truly been so fun!! 🤩
It’s the cam tensioner, that sound coming from the red bike is a dead giveaway!!
Hey Pete, my wife did the exact same thing except for her riding her own bike. There I was picking up a touring Harley. Best decision we ever made. We sooo enjoy our time together on the bike. Enjoy the miles!!!
Just meeting you and the chanel and I'm excited to see how this bike transforms further It looks awesome and I bet it will look better later on!

lol thanks brother 🍻
Dude im not even drunk but .....i love you man .
Great flick. It will be a fun ride. An when your ready to sell it you won't have a problem

I have an s83. I love it. I put a mustang seat on can’t stop riding it
Hi Pete. I had a 98 savage. Brings back memories. Your gonna love it n riding. I really enjoy your video's, keep them coming.

Love bikes and riding....
The way Pete likes to ride?
He'll be hooked in no time
That's awesome and yes u are absolutely right
You turned it into. “The Braptor bobber”
Could be the cam chain adjuster. Easy fix if there’s been no damage.

Wild Hawgs! 😎
That’s turning out sweet. You could probably get some shorter shocks and save your kidneys lol. Can’t wait to see it all done
Cam chain, tensioner, and both guides. Couple hundred bucks and a couple hours. I have done this on several of these bikes.
Careful, she might turn your shop into a greenhouse lol
Old lady can sing! Awesome 👌
Thank you so much!!!

I would have cut the shock and fenders and dipped the chrome black , but to each there own .👍
Timing chain I think
If a man had a lift table to lift the bike up a bit that would make it way easier to work on ..........
What type of bags you got???
I’m looking for a solo seat just like your red bike has. Can you tell me the brand and if it might fit an 07 s40?
i Just bought one too. just under 3,000 Canadian. arriving on Sunday. is it possible to make the pegs like a highway bike, chopper look. i feel im sitting bit too upright on it. im 5'6 have 33 in inseam legs. and yes, a girl!! I sit on Queen seat, right foot on back peg. Bobber will de value that thing. I saved my original pipe
I'd say valves need to be adjusted
Theas small engin motorcycles being bobed is becoming a thing
Unfortunately ruined a good looking bike
Sound is your baffle
Bikes are cheap now...at least in the states.....just bought a 2016 fat boy with 16,532 miles and a 103 ci for $6k
How can i show u a pic of my 2016 LS 650 withe drag bars send me a link i think you would live it

there's nothing un manly about either of these bikes!
the suki shop told me the noisy valves are typical of these machines
Hope ya passed saftey before ya chopped it lol
