    Elon's "genius move" of pulling teams from Tesla, SpaceX and the Boring Co. to work on Twitter, sounds like the setup for a joke: "So an EV engineer, a rocket engineer, and a tunneling engineer walk into Twitter HQ..."

      Hah, well yeah, they certainly seem like odd choices. Keep in mind though: Basically every complex industry employs software engineers these days. I think there might well be more overlap between making a car regulate it's own driving and making a software platform regulate it's own content, than one might immediately assume.

      That's what you think pal. It isn't. Nice try though. No, not every complex industry employs software engineers. Nice try though. Most don't. They might buy some software or use some services from other companies but that's another issue. Musk had serious issues with employee retention at Tesla. If they ever hired any software engineers, those were some of the main culprits. They also had problems hiring. Software engineers get involved for the money, they aren't like aerospace engineers that dream of working in the field.

    11:06 at best I believe you meant to say 420 thousand verified users.
    Twitter has roughly 450 million active users, and for sure 420 million of them cannot be verified. Less than 1% of twitter users are verified.

    • @daniel4647
      @daniel4647 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, how many of those "users" are bots or sock accounts? I kinda doubt Twitter has half a billion active users, that's 1/16 of everyone on Earth. And while it's not exactly evidence, I don't personally know anyone that uses Twitter, or even likes the platform. So those numbers seem rather inflated. I mean, Twitter is essentially the internet version of gossip magazines, but at least in my experience of reality there aren't that many people that care about what William Shatner or some Kardashian is upset about this week. Maybe I just live a sheltered life, but I find this really hard to believe.

      Fuck off 🖕
      I literally PMSL hearing about something on Twitter making it's way into the mainstream to go double viral over a pathetic topic.....the levels to which human dialogue can just spiral out of control like slipping arse up in a slippery wet dog turd at the top of the stairs to the subway!
      The fact that they send police to someone's house over something that's hurt some unknown person's feelings on the internet?
      Well that's a bit like waving red flag to a bull!
      I'm glad I don't live in Brittain, where I've seen clips showing this kind of stuff not just 'going on' but quite literally filling every exposed orifice of society like an infection!
      Watching videos of police being at someone's front door in less than 20min after posting something to Facebook? They will arrest and hand cuff you, humiliate you with a public spectacle as if you're a hardened criminal? They trump up fines, distort what is policy, deprive you of your civil rights? Lie, manipulates, fabricate data, fabricate anything they want? They can make false threats, tack on extra counts to your charges and the list is never ending?
      Yet there's violent home invasion in the same street and the Ambulance gets sick of waiting for the police to even turn up to take statements? Police don't turn up anyway what so ever? They contact next day when everything just seems so much less important? They make you travel down to the station? Information is given but you know.,.... it's just doesn't seem all that stressful? The demeanor of the victim is blunted with 24 hours to calm down, giving the false impression of what occurred 'seeming not all that bad?' and subsequent assigned importance value of 3 when it could have been a 7 the day prior when the victim was laying unresponsive in a pool of blood with hundreds of onlookers in hysteria blah blah blah don't care ....TLDL (too long didn't listen)
      Pretty much in Australia you've got a chance that close to 'almost impossible' and 'not a fucking chance' of getting police to do work that requires effor, when it's just easier and more profitable to write up tickets and fines for insert *accused non-compliance violation*-> here .... .... .... ....
      Please check the box gamble with police to use your word to play an interactive game called hang man. 3 games highest number of wins is the champion opt in to play second chance game with double or nothing odds!
      Does your character have the resources to take on a layer cake of corruption? If you think you've got what it takes? ENTER NOW!

      Knowing what people are thinking is just the start, what they really want is to control what people are thinking. And that's fairly easy if you can pick and choose what gets buried and what should be trending. Throw some bots in there to stir the pot and you basically got a recipe for social engineering on a mass scale. All you need now is mainstream media to use it as a source and give it legitimacy for the cherry on top.

    Having worked as a jr seng at a small tech company with multiple services, I imagine some of the manpower loss resulted in byzantine systems becoming near impossible to work with due to the unavailability of SMEs for knowledge transfer.
    Imagine entire teams gone for infra or dev-ops or some core auth service with existing lacklustre documentation. It might take a competent senior weeks to just make sense of the damn thing if they had no prior experience with the system, if they are even the right person to be taking over in the first place.
    So I guess that just means some systems, services or features just get abandoned entirely. And nobody even looks at it until it becomes a problem in the future.

    So how does a company operate under a 4M/day loss, how does that pay employees and operational expenses? How does a company that makes a daily loss have so much market value in the first place for musk to 'lose'?

    • @b.w.22
      @b.w.22 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      This is essentially a question about “growth” versus “value” investing. I suspect many more companies operate at a loss than many suspect, but these aren’t the metrics that concern growth investors. The metrics they pay attention to are things like revenue growth, market share, subscriber growth, etc. To them, making 50% more revenue than last year, even if more money is lost to do so, is the important part. “Value” investors care about profitability, ROI, price to earnings ratios, dividends, etc. These sorts of companies ought to return some percent of one’s investment but not the 1500% or more that a well-made growth investment might. That said, all companies are expected at some point to mature from growth to value if they are successful.
      As for how do they pay people at a $4M daily loss - well, that’s how the loss happens. A loss is calculated after things like salaries and expenses are considered: that’s how a company might have revenues of $100m and a profit of -5. A classic growth company will have more cash than debt, so if a company has hundreds of millions of dollars cash, they can run at a loss. When that cash is gone, they are “insolvent” and must do something about it, often selling more stock or perhaps bringing on more debt. The hope is that some tipping-point will come where they go “cash flow positive,” either by getting enough subscribers, streamlining operations, making returns on investments, firing employees, etc., and they can achieve profitability. If you’re generating $100m and losing 4, it seems like just a tweak here or there could make that up. That’s Elon’s gamble and only time will tell.

    Twitter's attitude to bots is interesting. Among all socials, it has the most massive library of APIs, so, in a way, it attracts bots by design. Why wouldn't they just admit to public what every developer knows: that they are a bot-friendly platform?

    • @melaleucam8
      @melaleucam8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's funny that when Elon was trying to wriggle out of having to buy Twitter, he was relentlessly talking about bots. As soon as he bought it - radio silence on bots. Could have something to do with approximately 50% of Elon's followers being bots. Or something to do with a large chunk of their decreasing advertising revenue being due to bots.

      @OntologyofValue ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The issue I have with Elon tweeting as he has historically is his comments have a negative impact on his companies and shareholders, consequently negatively impacting the people who keep his companies running. Also, some argue his tweets cause disruption to the stock market which comes with a whole host of other baggage.

      It's speculators' fault for being a bunch of insane people ascribing fake wealth to meaningless actions. If our economic system can be toppled by WORDS then maybe we need to build a more robust one based off of actual contributed economic value.

    @ColdFusion, What is your take on Mastodon, decentralized social media. I find the idea very refreshing. but it needs some advertisement to get better funding and services. If the sicoal media was more Opensource and decentralized we wouldn't have issues with bad CEO's. If you don't like the server you are on or their policies you simply move your account to a different server/host. curious what your take on this is?

    • @ianp5a
      @ianp5a ปีที่แล้ว

      Centralised networks stop caring about their users when they become dominant. If you don't like it, leave! But people fear losing followers and being shut out. The decentralised ones, Mastodon, Friendica, Pleroma, Diaspora etc. let you join in from any of the thousands of independent networks you choose. Choice! And has a long future not affected by the whims of a crazy billionaire. Although Musk did encourage millions to leave Twitter for the Fediverse.

      There is a reason for this. Twitter has 'special connections' that manage the current media cycle. That was one of the key values that Elon saw. Otherwise he could have just built his own system l.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The problem with starting from scratch is the user base. Without users the platform isn't worth the server it's hosted on. Minds for example is better than Facebook in every way except for one, the number of users.

    I never liked the idea of a payment verified premium account especially, since most of them are crammed with ads. I currently have 8 online accounts and if I had to pay $8/month for each one it would get expensive for the value and service I would get out of them. I really do not care for the chaotic format of Twitter or Yelp and so I get very little value from them. If Elon does this to Twitter, it's no skin off my nose as I would likely close it down and not bother with the $8/month payment verification account. Twitter needs a fundamental way of how threads are formatted and filtered for ease of use
