  • In 2015, the state of Florida revised its teacher licensing exam to better reflect changes already made to standardized tests for students. But we discovered in the state’s quest to recruit higher quality teachers, some students are learning from the lowest quality teachers. Investigative reporter Katie LaGrone reports.

    State required test should be free. Why should teacher have to pay to fill out a job application. Not a question. It is a money grab and nothing more. If not, let the employer (the state of Florida) pay for the test,

    I am so glad someone investigated this. I have failed the math four times, and all by one point. SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG with these tests!😡 And I refuse to take them again, tgey are so expensive! I have subbed long-term. Now I am in a private school, and will stay there. I will avoid the public school's unfair certification tests.

      With respect, I passed the GK the first time. As I did for my ESE test. Furthermore, there are thousands who have done the same. I believe that the way you prepare for these test will dictate success. Many of my friends who did not pass the test have said the same thing as you. But when you ask them about their study habits and how they went about it, it was clear these were not the best methods. I wish you the best of luck!

      This the ONLY source I used and found it to be MOSTLY accurate. I say mostly since it covered most of the test but some of the stuff on the book was not on the test and vice versa. I wish there was a more detailed book but this is the best you can do. I studied key definitions more than anything. Also for the scenarios, remember that when it comes to ESE the least restrictive environment is always the correct answer.

How horrible that in a state where education is so very desperate for great teachers, WHY DO THIS TO OUR YOUTH????

    They don't prepare well for these test during college. Its just like how the Fcat used to be noone knows whats specifically on the test and classes cant fully prepare you for a test instructors are unsure about content. My instructors were asking students who had taken the test what was on it so they could try and go over the material. Colleges and these test makers need to sit down and come up with a strategic way to make sure that the stuff on the test is completely and thoroughly covered in the curriculum.

      Stephany Hernandez yes. Go to the Fl DOE website and download the.blue print for the standards on each test you'll need to take. Make sure you are familiar with each section. Research or use you tube when you aren't comfortable with certain topics. Look up reviews before purchasing guides. I used xam online books, study.com, and a company called Nava Ed. I passed two of my tests the first time. And am working on thw third. I am a career changer not an education major. So it is possible to pass.

    • @DominicanOps

      Buy a book from REA. It works well. If you are having trouble with the Math (which is really the category most people fall into) then you need to hire a tutor. I had a friend who failed three times. They said they didn't want to pay for a tutor. Um ok? It's only your job right? When I studied for these exams, I went all in and made it my complete focus. Passed on the first try.

    • @emmegray2554
      @emmegray2554 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the Nava Ed guides. They have books and video sessions. I passed all parts of the GK and K-6 and Prek-3 on the first time. I am going to use for the Proff Ed as well. I also used the Cliff's notes for reinforcement. Look them up. It is worth the investment.

    Honestly, any respectable teacher won't stay in Florida at this point (hell, any person with dignity will leave as soon as possible). Florida is no longer a viable state to live in and work in, and at this point, staying is just going to ruin your life. Add in that it's about to see the worst hurricane season in possibly Florida's entire existence with more insurance companies leaving, and it's just no longer worth it.

    Just graduated with my bachelor’s in mathematics. I took the FTCE math 6-12 after seeing/reading all these horror stories about people not being able to pass. I can confidently say now that if you can’t pass these exams, you should not be able to teach these subjects. Passing them doesn’t necessarily qualify you to teach, but failing them definitely disqualifies you.

    The problem isn’t the test. The problem is the people taking the test. They shouldn’t be in a classroom. How can a person struggle to take tests and then teach children and adolescents how to take tests? It makes no sense.
    It is my observation that most people who struggle with standardized tests are not true academics with a genuine interest in learning. They often read and study only when absolutely necessary. They treat learning like a game to be played, not a way of life.
    I am licensed to teach 8 subjects and have scored at least in the top 15 percent of all test takers on every standardized test I have ever taken. If I were in a position to hire a teacher, I would always choose one with a high test score.

    Teacher candidates have the lowest GPAs of all the majors in colleges. Most teachers go into education because it is easy to pass the required college classes, compared with classes in accounting, math, and science. I do make exceptions for high school computer, math and science teacher candidates - those candidates really need to know the subject matter.
