The one who plants a tree today, knowing that he will never sit in its shade. Has at least started to understand the meaning of life. He plants the tree for prosperity " thanks dad" .🌳🙏
The greatest activist song I've ever heard the man is definitely for life of the planet and every thing that goes along with it it feels good to hear this song again
"Where wild things have to go, to disappear forever". Words that made me ashamed a life time ago simply breaks my heart today, too late now even for shame.
Considering that Canada's relatively small population sie, this country has produced some of the most prolific, meaningful and talented music artists, such as Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Feist, K.D. Lang, and certainly Mr. Cockburn.
Been looking for this jmusician for a long time. I saw him first on a Pbs documentary singing World of Wonders. I love his music and how he plays. Thank you whoever put it on.
If the powers of the world haven't heard your plea for saving the environment and all those who depend upon it in such moving way as you put it across in lyrics and tune and refuse to understand the pertinence of your endeavour as an ambassador of helping our planet they need their heads read and need to change their lives, Good for you Bruce always and for ever. Please keep in touch
I ve been helping a guy repot trees to plant out in south west victoria in oz. Unfortunatly we will make minimal impact We need a lot more people doing this.
Beyond the time and space of my life... the impact of what i do for good should live on.. This song more relevant today than ever... I am this human, born of this earth trapped by its constructs.... to the children of the future we owe it to them to do whats right now... I am made of the past, exist in the present and impact the future... I am gifted this life and i must pay it forth... I was a child when this song was given life... Within me is still that child and this song is still giving life and awakening those who need to be woken... We do not inherit this earth, we borrow it from our children... Make the change to make your life the positive impact it should be...
I called my son Forest 25 years ago after this song. The chorus still tears me up. Thank you Bruce. Unfortunately Forrest Gump came out not long after my boy was born so he has had to fight for his name, and the real message was lost. Even tho the movie is certainly a good one
As a child in Trinidad & Tobago. We grew up listening to trees falling. That is when our men harvested those torsos. Because we lived in the Rain Forest. Geneva M. Neale (Audain) Poet.
This song now encompasses our whole planet, not just the disappearing forests, but life teetering on the abyss a self destruction. Our home planet has never seen such an all out war on its very existence, all in the name of "energy" which directly translates into "GREED!" The marionet masters have found the one common thread which to pull to make us all dance to their wishes and that is our ignorant desire to be independently mobile, all the way to the grave.
I agree my friend.. As I said before, bruce should be required listening to all the land rapers and water thieves of this world. The giant corp, who with so much glee, plot to destroy whatever they can , for the almighty dollar..I have grown very tired of the excuses and flat out greed of those who we are supposed to look up to.. Payback is truly a bitch,, unfortunately you and I and especially our childrens children will be the ones who will suffer the most..
Precisely! WE do hold the power, and if WE don't get our collective heads out of our collective anuses it won't matter anymore!! I never said technology was greed, it is WHAT THE TECHNOLOGY IS USED FOR that defines greed. Fraking oil out of the ground and destroying life sustaining fresh water aquifers is just the tip of the melting iceberg. I'm all for going forward, but only in a direction that takes us on a path of restoration, not devestation!
steven hewitt I totally agree - it's horrific what is being done to the planet, in the name of consumerism and all-out greed. I teach my high-school students about the way humans are pillaging the world of natural resources, and the consequences we're currently facing b/c of it. We listen to this song as one of our "texts" - and I say that this was 25 years ago, people KNEW, they SAW what was happening, but those in power "Big Oil" and "Big Business" chose not to "hear the forest fall". Now, climate change is a discussion point in most places, but there are still heavy-duty hardcore deniers - within governments and those who actually have bigger power for change. And still, people don't talk about the consequences that have been ongoing for decades: loss of species (plants for medicine, animals driven to extinction, peoples who have been "run out" of traditional lands - forested and/or polluted to the point where they can no longer support the needs of an (often ancient) people. May this generation see the immediacy of BIG CHANGE. If it doesn't...there may not be many to follow, before we humans are on the extinction list. ~k
steve canny See my comment below - I don't know that my students (B.C. teenagers and adults) are a big part of the machine, but hope that their understanding and realization will spread to their friends and families, and that the upcoming generations will be more considerate of whatever world we have left to pass along. "We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children" - proverb (original source unknown)
Shame to say I'd never heard of this guy. Just stumbled on him on YT. POWERFUL SONG, but will enough people listen? I doubt it. :-( And the guitar playing is ace.
Thanks for always falling on the right side of history Bruce! "Busy monster eats dark holes in the spirit world Where wild things have to go To disappear Forever"
"Fishermen, hunters, woodchoppers, and others, spending their lives in the fields and woods, in a peculiar sense a part of Nature themselves, are often in a more favorable mood for observing her, in the intervals of their pursuits, than philosophers or poets even, who approach her with expectation. She is not afraid to exhibit herself to them... We cannot but pity the boy who has never fired a gun; he is no more humane, while his education has been sadly neglected. "
The dream forest is calling - can anybody hear? We are the architects of reality from dream space to 3D and our lesson is to treasure all that is present all that is beautiful and all that is - this dream is real - this forest is real - the creatures do not disappear - they live forever in all that is and in all the myriad levels of imagination and creation that exist. To limiet them and yourself to that which displays in the physical 3d is not only not helpful, but is painful and even disheartening. We CAN dream a better dream but if we have to 'face the music' of the current 3d mess of creation under current conditions and call it good, we are being set up. Too hard to do knowing what we know. Oh and by the way they are not grain eaters. They are GRASS eaters and that makes all the difference - esp in a rain forest setting. They co habitate. I love you so much. And there is so much to do.
You have what I had/have - we all are 'it'. Read Jane Roberts/Seth - you'll catch on. :) And I adore Bruce and have felt all his pain and anger - but anger does not take us there. Only love can take us there.
The majority of cattle consumed by the Western and Third world's, after about a year of living on mother's milk and then open range , are sent to feedlots..."There, the cows are rapidly fattened up with grain-based feeds, usually made with a base of soy or corn. The conventionally raised cows are often given drugs and hormones to grow faster, as well as antibiotics to survive the unsanitary living conditions. The cows live there for a few months and are then moved into the factory for slaughtering." -Kris Gunnars, BSc
Thanks for not selling out Bruce. Thanks for giving a voice to those without a choice.

What a wicked song man. I stumbled upon Bruce Cockburn after reading the quote "kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight" in a book about U2.

calling, calling deep
Never thought of possession... all this is mine!
Best version I have heard, thanks for posting. But please check your spelling for typos. (Lobotomy for example).
From the Slice O Life album I assume.
"Where wild things have to go to disappear.....forever". Still as poignant as the first time I heard it.

If a tree falls in the forest - get over it.
Being Canadian has nothing to do with the song. Jeez. Missing the point.
