    6:08 The silver side needs to be on the inside to keep someone warm. That way around it just keeps hear away.

      If these mylar blankets had a non-shiny side I would agree. Medline (the biggest hospital supplier) and Mayday Emergency (mylar) Blanket brands do not. These are exactly the same on both sides. Thanks! Amy

    Thank you. How can a person assess the wound, i.e. slash vs. stab in a non-visual, or low vision manner without causing further harm?

    • @DrBonesNurseAmy
      @DrBonesNurseAmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heidi, There are some things you can learn about the wound visually. Determining the exact depth of penetration is not always possible. In normal times, advanced radiologic studies can evaluate deep organs and assess the depth of the injury. You, as off-grid medic, cannot. At the scene, your job is to control bleeding as much as possible. With hemostatic dressings like QuikClot, this may involve spreading the wound open to identify the bleeding vessel, which gives you an idea of the depth. The hemostatic dressing must be placed directly on the bleeding vessel, packed, and pressure applied for at least three minutes. Once bleeding is better-controlled, you will want to get the victim to where the bulk of your supplies are so that you have as much control over the environment as possible. A decision can then be made as to further action. Here are some guidelines from the Wilderness Medical Society, of which I'm a member, regarding wound evaluation, treatment, and care in off-grid settings. www.spiritustraining.com/uploads/8/7/2/0/87206168/woundmanagement.pdf

    I think of a situation where someone needs serious help, and how we control pain, esp if we need to perform any medical procedure without pain control.
    I know so little about natural pain controllers
    They do not teach us very much in regards to natural healing, not herbs or plants, only pharmaceuticals, and lets be frank, even that’s limited. I’ve had to go out and learn on my own time.
    But finding real information, its difficult. I found a lot of natural healing info is quite opinionated rather than fact.

    • @DrBonesNurseAmy
      @DrBonesNurseAmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. D, it's true that the hard data is lacking for some herbs. If a disaster lasts long enough, however, the pharmaceuticals will run out and you will left only with what medicinal herbs you can grow in your garden. You should identify what herbs might grow in your area that could have an effect against pain and incorporate them into a medicinal garden. We have an entire chapter in the Survival Medicine Handbook on natural pain relief.

    Sure a responser has to close wound,depending on wound depth, should you place inner stitches, or just pack wound, let wound close from the inside to stop a abcess of build up fluid if wound was just staple from surface.

    • @DrBonesNurseAmy
      @DrBonesNurseAmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve, If the circumstances leading to the injury are clearly "dirty," the wound would be a candidate for open wound care and letting it heal by granulation. If the wound is deep, any closure must be in multiple layers to avoid the presence of "dead space," an area which would allow formation of the abscess you mention.

    CAT-Ts appear to be becoming, if not already universal, with NATO. Sent a handful to an ngo that was prepping field med kits for Ukraine. Also seen some pics of Ukraine soldiers with personal CAT-Ts secured to the front of their gear.

      @DrBonesNurseAmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank is wonderful news Jim! There are really a few TQs that work well, but the CAT-Ts are probably the most well known, for sure. Easy to put on one-handed too! Be safe, Nurse Amy :-)
