  • Highlights of William Shatner's acting in the Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within". Captain Kirk has to cope with a transporter malfunction that creates an evil version of himself. Shatner demonstrates the ability to portray an evil and a good person as the same time. Very emotional episode.

    Shatner isn’t only a noun. It’s a verb. “To Shatner” is to exaggerate virtually every aspect of your being in order to deliver the message in no uncertain terms. It presupposes that we have precious little time to waste on repeating ourselves, time that could be better spent cruising space hotties at warp 10.9.

  • @Hellserch
    @Hellserch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Shatner’s has no shame, he will do anything to get your attention. Couple that with a curious vulnerability makes him great. The response I always give to those who poke fun at his hyperbolic style of acting is: do you remember the scene? The answer is always yes and that’s the point of drama, to disturb you enough to think, even if you don’t appreciate the delivery.

    • @beastslayer3228
      @beastslayer3228 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrong. The point of drama is not that you remember it. It's that you're immersed in it, and Shatner's acting is anything but immersive. It's unnatural, calls attention to itself, and brings you out of the story. And Shatner's unnatural acting is not "to get your attention". It's because he's a lousy actor. He's acting from his head, trying to imagine what someone who feels this way would behave like (and getting it way wrong) rather than actually tapping into those feelings. Jeffrey Hunter was such a better choice and would have elevated the series greatly.

    I think most people will not realize that most of these episodes were seen on small black and white TV's. Many might criticize Shatner for overacting, but the medium that it was broadcast on was not designed for subtlety.

  • @andromedastar4900
    @andromedastar4900 7 ปีที่แล้ว +295

    He was a stage actor, and then when he started appearing on television, he didn't understand that you can't act the same way. On television and film, you have to act with subtlety and nuance. The problem was that he never adapted or learned how to do that, he just continued acting his television and film roles as if he were on stage at a theatre performing a play, hence he was extremely melodramatic and that came across as being a terrible actor. But the irony is that his "haminess" is part of what made Star Trek so memorable and the frequent emotional meltdowns brought an aspect of vulnerability to the Kirk character that was a good foil to the other lead character, Spock.

    • @surfskatechill127
      @surfskatechill127 7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      It's sad most people think he was just bad at acting. I personally love the stage acting aspect of Star Trek.

    • @andromedastar4900
      @andromedastar4900 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      He isn't a great actor, or one of the best, but he's also not a bad actor at all. He was quite a good and serious actor back in his theatre days and in his earlier roles. He was actually offered a contract from one of the Hollywood studios in the mid 50s, but he turned it down because back then stage actors thought the serious acting was done in theatres and that movies were a lower standard. Also, one thing I love about Shatner is that he got into acting only because it was what he truly enjoyed. He was not in it for fame and money. He started doing television shows because it was the time time when television was transitioning from live anthologies to pre-filmed shows like Twilight Zone, Thriller, etc. It was also a way to make a good middle-class living, because being a theatre actor doesn't make enough money when you have a family to support. Star Trek was the reason he got famous and made the big bucks, (not during the original run of who, as ST didn't become a big thing till the mid 70s) but in a way he still resents it because now all people remember him for his is for that one hammy role he played and don't take him seriously as an actor.

    Smeg right. He had a unique style and was one of the more captivating actors. Truly excellent. They tested actors' ability more back then too. They don't tend to do extended shots without a camera change, extended closeups or anything like that these days. These days it's 2 minutes on set, then change the set, everything heightened by lens type and special effects. They didn't have the budget back then to put so much in the hands of the director.

    Oddly enough, Shatner's face (especially when his eyes move from one side to another) reminds me of the head of the player on the bottom of the screen on "Doom."

    As much fun as this episode is, I really think some of his best work is in the 2nd season's "Obsession," which is more low-key and Shatner kept a lid on much of the ham. It's still impressive what he did with "Enemy Within," especially considering at the time of filming, they were still getting a handle on the characters.

    People may mock him - but when you look back, Bill was unique - highly memorable and in fact a brilliant actor. His inflections - his voice - his facial expressions totally dominate the screen. Put it this way - I first watched him as Captain Kirk as a 9 year old kid - I'm 52 now and perhaps even more impressed. Nobody acts like Bill! That shouldn't be mocked, that should be admired as a great artistic acheivement! Therefore is an Emmy for his original performance too late???

    Mr. William Bill Shatner,
    Hi Bill! I am 67 years old and have watched you most of my life throughout your career. Although I was never a Star trek fan I saw you perform in Twilight Zone's "Creature at 20,000 Feet", also your Rocket Man solo (fabulous) and most recently on an American pickers episode about decorating your office and the house with the millstone! Of course you were a class act working with George Foreman, Henry Winkler and nasty Terry Bradshaw on "Better Late Than Never", a wonderful show in 2016.
    My wife and I both enjoyed Better Late Than Never although Bradshaw's nasty ways probably got it cancelled! Winkler too! Only you and old George where the class acts.
    I have been meaning to write to you for a very long time. My wife and I met when we were 15 years old. We married at eighteen and recently celebrated our 49th anniversary. She is still my best friend. We were talking this morning and your name came up. My wife Madelyn said, "it is time for you to write to Bill Shatner". My wife and I are both Christians.
    We know you are not religious Bill but that you view yourself as an Animist. Animists believe in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe - the attribution of a soul to plants and inanimate objects.
    Christians often feel those things too, but add their faith in a "creator of all things" and the reality and Faith of personally knowing Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I have believed in Jesus since I was 12 years old, my wife since she was 18.
    During the 49 years of our marriage we have experienced many unexplained things and events. Nothing less than miracles. So many in fact that I cannot begin to tell them here. These events cemented our faith in Jesus.
    When I was 16 I went through a phase where it was hard for me to believe most of the Bible. I doubted the stories of "The Parting of the Red Sea" and "Noah's Ark" to name a couple. In fact I became weak in my faith all-together until I studied Bible prophecy! I was led to this study after reading the "Late Great Planet Earth" by Hal Lindsey. I strongly urge you to read Hal's book.
    Much of the Bible's prophecies have already occurred. All have taken place exactly as written, in many cases hundreds of years after being written.
    If someone told you that one day you would be on a TV show with George Foreman traveling the world - back when you were filming "The Twilight Zone" you would have been shocked when it's so a accurately came to pass. You would wake up and become very intrigued indeed! Well I must say that Bible prophecy is even more profound than that Bill.
    The Bible says that the Jews are God's chosen people. However did you know that the Bible accurately predicted that all the Jews would be driven from their land, that they would become despised and rejected and scattered over every corner of the Earth. This occurred exactly as written.
    Consider what Hitler attempted to do to all of the Jews when he attempted to extinguish them.
    Next the Bible says that the Jews would regain Israel and that the Jews would return in mass! Now the Jews are returning to Israel so fast, from so many places globally, that over 100 languages are spoken in Israel today.
    The Bible next predicts that Jerusalem will become a "cup of trembling" to the whole world! Armageddon will come. A huge war unlike the world has ever seen or experienced.
    The Bible also warns that Satan is roaming the Earth seeking whom he might devour. Satan knows his time is short. Soon he will impose his "666 mark" on everyone - that no man may "buy or sell" unless he takes the mark. But God warns us to not accept the Mark or we will lose our place with Him and be eternally damned.
    Bill, the Bible says only a fool says there is no God. The Bible says that we only need to look out into the universe to know that God is real!
    In the book of Romans, chapter 1, verses 18, 19 and 20 it says: for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God has shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and godhead; so they are without excuse.
    In John 3:16 it is written "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
    Bill, when we acknowledge our faith in Jesus before men and participate in believer's baptism (as an adult) the Bible tells us we will also receive the Holy Spirit as our comforter. Why should we do this? Because God says we are all evil, sinfull and as "filthy rags". That no one is righteous, no not one.
    Just as animals were slaughtered at the altar in the old testament - Jesus was slaughtered on the cross that we may be forgiven our sins and trespasses. Jesus became God's sacrifice for us, for our sins. Not just sins in our past but every day until we die.
    The Bible tells us that Jesus will return to Earth two more times. Soon he will come without warning to call His Christians home. Jesus will show up in the twinkling of an eye. First the dead believers will rise from their graves to meet him in the air, followed next by all Christians still living - who will be given new bodies that are not corruptible. This event will be followed by 7 years of great trouble on the earth for mankind.
    Finally, Armageddon will ensue and Jesus will return a final time to stop Israel from being wiped out. Jesus will then judge the entire world.
    It is easy to become a Christian Bill. All someone needs to do is acknowledge faith in Jesus Christ as their Redeemer. To do that just say this simple prayer;
    "Jesus I believe in you and I accept you. I know that I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sins and my trespasses. I will follow You and do my best to be like you. I will never be ashamed to acknowledge you and will tell others of my decision to accept you. In your name I pray, amen."
    If you prayed this prayer Bill then you will be saved. At your first opportunity seek believer's baptism in order to receive the Holy Spirit.
    Please give thought to my letter Bill, we hate to lose you.
    Sincerely, Guy

      I think there's one better. The City On The Edge Of Forever. When he allows his love Joan Collins to get run over by the truck. As he's hugging Dr. McCoy (who he stopped from saving Joan) and McCoy accuses him of deliberately preventing the save ("do u know what you've done"): the look of anguish on Bill's face was amazing. And the thing is in an anti Shatnerian turn: Bill said nothing. Leonard Nimoy and several other TOS actors have stated that this scene and episode was Shatner's best acting of the series. The closing scene where Shatner says "let's get the hell out of hear" was equally understated and powerful. They had to fight the censors to include the word hell in the closing.
