Tips on How to Pick Film for Portrait Photography

In today's film ill be sharing tips on how to pick film for portrait photography. When picking the right film stock for film photography portraits, it's very important to consider how the light will affect your film as well as how sharp the image shall be. With this in mind, I'll be sharing my thoughts on picking the right iso film speed as well as how the film will affect image sharpness and film grain. I'll be covering color negative film as well as black and white film from brands like Kodak as well as Ilford. This video should also help you consider shooting other film stocks other than Kodak portra 400 introducing you to other film stocks such as Kodak Portra 160 and Kodak Ektar 100.

Hello. Great and informative video. Love your shots. I live in SoCal. I’m shooting soon, maybe in the morning, afternoon, and sunset. But, if im starting in the am, I think I may shoot 160 for my first time. What are are your thoughts on shooting in areas where there’s nothin but beaming sunlight? Should I should with the sun behind my model? Any tips that wouldn’t require any reflectors and such would be appreciated.

- it’s all creative choice, I do both but usually just prefer the shade. Against the sun doesn’t come out that nice in ever situation but can definitely make a photo that much more beautiful if executed correctly. What I will share though is that, it’s a great idea to shoot 160 film! You’ll be able to create wonders with it. ❤️

Thank you for the tip on shooting Ekatar. I photograph a lot of people that happen to have dark skin and as a white person I'm naturally a bit red, I burn easily. I'm based in Ireland were we turn to tomatos with a little bit of sun.

I really want to get into portraits. I'm just getting into film photography in general but do you have any tips on how lenses affect portrait photos? I've heard using zoom lenses is better but I'm not 100% sure how true that is or why
