The old foul weather jackets, pier 12 and the VW bug and Big John. 1974 thru 1977. Watching I was back standing on the cat walk looking for someone waiting on the pier and seeing my yellow VW setting on the end of the pier, all those feeling came back and I was young for a moment again.
Love these old videos. My grandfather was in the navy 32 years, my father was in the navy served 3 tours in vietnam 63-70 nothing but respect for these men The past & future! GO NAVY!!!!
i know Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot the password. I would love any help you can offer me.
What a great video! Back in 1955, I did a 3 year, 3 month tour of duty onboard the USS forrestal (CVA59), the first Super Carrier. I was a plank owner. Sailed 132,000 Nautical Miles on her. Watching this video brought back many special memories. Thank you for posting this Beautiful video. BTW, I was a Radioman on her.
I did two cruises on Forrestal in 1988 and 1989/90. I wonder if those young people serving now are spared the heartbreak that we had to endure. I remember pulling into NS Mayport, FL for the first time as a 19 year old nonrate with nobody waiting for me on the pier. I'd flown out to the ship mid cruise so this was my first time pulling in to our home port. I didn't have duty that day but I offered to stand in for my buddy who wanted to be with his wife after being away for 6 months. Watching these reunions on the pier was still powerful because many of my shipmates were under extreme stress from being away from their loved ones. I was jarring seeing people who had made themselves so hard-hearted during the cruise be reduced to tears from happiness - or other emotions. Sadly, we didn't have Internet or satellite phones back in those days so those cruises were too long for many marriages to survive. Even then - just a few short years before the Internet became a public thing - we had to rely on "snail mail" or sign up to wait our turn for the HAMM radio to communicate with our loved ones. It really hit me when I found out that many new fathers were just meeting their children for the first time on that pier; the Navy didn't grant paternity leave in those days. As for the Forrestal, the last time I saw her she was silent and rusting away next to the Kennedy behind the breakwater in the former naval station in Philadelphia. She and he class sisters all fell to the cutting torch several years later. I hope they make the Kennedy into a museum.
I saw Big John in the Med that year while serving as an EM2 on board the Independence CVA-62. Shortly after that she departed the Med for NOB Pier 12 as depicted in this video. Great times.
I steamed with the USS Kennedy's battle group in the Med back in 1970 while swerving on the USS Dahlgren DLG-12 during the Jordanian Civil War Crisis. She was in Malta at the same time we were, and I ran into a friend I had gone to Radar A school with in Great Lakes at the Malta USO. He was stationed on the Kennedy, and he gave me a great tour of the ship. When he toured my destroyer he asked how I could live like that. Great memories...
They must've recorded this right before Buddy Yates (Speaking on the comm @ 1:03) got promoted to Rear Admiral in Sept. '69. Amazing clip to watch for sure!!!
Was VS-22's Corpsman TAD to Medical during the 82 Med/IO Cruise. Though this was filmed before my time aboard it brought back many memories. At the time this was filmed I was with a Marine Artillery unit in Okinawa
I was an ADJ 2 attached to VA 95 for Her maiden cruise. I just got off the phone with Capt Yates Skipper of Big John remonising about that cruise. He was an absolute delight to talk to. A very thoughtful man
1968-71, was my second and last cruise on USS JFK before being discharged. Started in crisis mode without advance notice in response to a Middle East crisis.
