I was served on the Indy from 31 December 1987 at the Philadelphia Shipping Yard. Indy completed it SLEP program and what sent to North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, California. I completed my Navy service on 31 August 1991 when Indy was stationed there. I transferred to US Army and officially retired on 23 September 2009. She was an excellent carrier! Bravo Zulu, Indy!
Yes, we fixed all the alq-126b, alq-167, alq-108, arl-50, alr-45, alr-67. And all of the chaff despencers. The dang AO'S would always tear them up pretty bad. I don't miss that part. Lol
I am in this video I am the guy standing next to the guy directing the start up of the E2 at 3:20. I was a CT onboard the Indy at during that deployment I was waiting for the plane startup so I could load crypto into it.
I was stationed on Indy 3yrs did West pac 2 tours in Vietnam and North Atlantic cruise and Med cruises.Went from Big I to Tin Can Navy loved time on Independence CVA 62.Ron Rhoten ETN3.
Back in 91, an idiot lit up a cigarette in the oxygen room near the fantail and blew himself up. I had to fight that fire, it was directly above our birthing area. First time I ever smelled burnt human flesh. I threw up.
I remember that I was assigned to V-3 division Going up 3 decks looking for a EEBD the running back to the hanger bay ran past the line of shipmate waiting in line and saw his body being carried out Have never forgotten but to this day don't know his name RIP
I served on the Indy in 1971-72 with VA-66. My squadron lost a mechanic at night when he walked in front of the intake of an A-7. Also an E-2 Greyhound went into the water attempting to land killing the 2 pilots. 7 passengers survived.
I was on Indy 1983 & 84 I was attached to VA-176. Urgent fury and the Multi National peace keeping force in Beirut. The Independence is a war ship for sure. Great days.
I have liked this movie ever since a sailor invited my girl and me to tour the ship moored off Naples in fall 1979. Deep in Indy's bowels some hydraulics guys told us she was "the first girl ever to visit their shop." Haha
Thanks for sharing this video! I had bought a Sony camcorder from the Fleet Exchange before this deployment, and I'd taken similar video on vultures row as well. It's a shame there wasn't any stabilization other than holding my camera as steady as I could. At least your video footage is much less shaky than mine. Take a "like!"
TC holik Cool! I worked at AIMD 64C. ECM shop. They flu me all the way out to the Indy in the Gulf just in time to be relived by the Ranger. Lucky me...lol. lots of good times.
I was on deck during this time .. probably driving tractors ... don't think i was a yellow shirt yet th-cam.com/video/0TokbfRhRn4/w-d-xo.html that's Coleman .. i know him th-cam.com/video/0TokbfRhRn4/w-d-xo.html ... i think that's Sam Hoyt with the camera .. he was DC in V-1 division (damage control)
Does anyone here recall a mishap around 90 - 91 aboard the Indy flight Deck where an airman lost both legs from being run over by an F-18? I am not able to find any documentation but I know it happened because I was there as the corpsman in the flight deck BDS. If you know of or have any information about this please reach out to me.
Remember the jarhead that died n his bunk from pneumonia. Because he only got cold packets from med call. Or the one the got fried by steam. The one that jumped overboard. The sidewinder that flew across the deck going under the plane. Or the fuel spill. The list goes on ofcource
Remember waking up on the way to Guam with the capt say n we are on our way to a conflict in the Middle East. Than going up top to see every plane loaded with live ammo. Glad you made it bro.
I actually believe it was a chalk walker that got run over by a F-14. My Chief ran up to him and used his belt as a tourniquet. I was in VLA at the time and was in the Camera booth. We recorded the video. Only reason I remember it is cause we had to send copies of the tape off to several different places for review. Sad day! Iwas onboard from 90-95
We had a 14 almost go over the side in March or April 95 because it was too close to another tomcat on cat 4. Nosegear went into the catwalk. Both ejected and recovered.

@@DisabledParkHopper Yes, I remember that event. Happened on one of our F-14's while chock walking. AN Horner was his name
The USS Independence had no waist cat blast fence?
Not for CAT 4, exhaust went over the side, nothing behind it.
