Enjoyed this mate. I can appreciate the anxiety and the comment situation. So glad it’s water off a ducks back for you. I must admit for a long time I took similar things very personally. Occasionally I still do but have learned that there’s some very sad lonely people out there that vent their frustration on others. Keep up the good work and thanks for the mention

Hey Paul. Cheers for that. Sorry I meant to message you asking was it ok that I mentioned you. I hear what you're saying. When you put so much time into the channel, it's hard seeing negative but it's out of our control. Think it's more not understanding how anyone can put anyone down. I suppose it's not in my nature. After the comments I put way too many words in the comment filter and just saw 152 waiting for approval 😂😂 must change the filter settings. Appreciate the comment mate and thanks for the years of entertainment you have provided. Legend man. ☘️🤙

Thanks so much pal. Appreciate the comment. It's a killer isn't it. Anxiety is horrible. I am happy to add that I rearranged all my camping gear and I got my process for packing down to 1 hour. Well that is with all my charging complete. It has been a life saver for me mate. Gone from 1 hour from 2 days of stress. I will create a vlog of what I have done to change things up. I am heading for a camp tomorrow night and it's the 1st time in years I have been in a heap from anxiety so something worked. Thanks for the sub. I subbed your back. Looking forward to checking your channel. My email in the description. Reach out if you need help. ✌️

Amazing Martin, I could have listened to you for a lot longer there. I don’t really know where to start with it but here goes, plenty of times I feel the same about packing the bag, I’d pack on a Wednesday for a Friday camp but on Friday I’d repacked at least twice, double checking the tent for pegs and poles, then the rucksack for sleeping bag and other equipment even though I packed on the Wednesday. We went to Wicklow which is a near four drive from us then a 10k hike to pitch up a camp, i had a mini “meltdown” to myself, just get me home I thought (still not sure why) but then I kicked into gear and thought I’m here to enjoy what I do, we had a great night and next day. Loved that video and I’m sure I could have touched on more 😂 👍

Cheers Geoff. Appreciate the comment. I will be creating a vlog of what I changed to combat the anxiety. Made some massive changes since this camp cancelled honestly say I have it nearly dialled in. Will share my process over the next week or 2. Got such a massive reaction to this topic that it deserves some airtime. Cheers for the comment mate. Appreciate it.

Martin, well worth putting the steaks on hold for a stunning sunset☀️👍 even though they were a handful for the pan😊 Always good to have trusted go to spots, as well as looking for some of those new spots👍 I would get some of that anxiety too, even when going to trusted spots, with all those variables that are involved in wild camping in the mountains. As you say when you get there it all melts away so always worth going👍 People not liking you stuff is part and parcel, though anyone purely insulting for the sake of it should be gone alright👍 Humans are definitely weird and can carry all sorts of anger, hurt, pain etc that can come out negatively towards others, though as you say is is about removing that from your space and leaving it with that person.

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks so much Gerry. From day one you have supported the channel and I can't thank you enough for that. 100% agree. Anxiety melts away is right. I have never regretted going for a camp or hike so that is the answer right there. It's the build up that catches people. And yes, I feel sorry for the angry keyboard warriors. Something is missing in their lives. But as I always say.. what people think of me is known of my business 🙌
Ps I see you out with your son hiking these days. A great start for a young fella. No better teacher.

Thanks to you I got off my arse and got a tent and some bits together and started solo camping. I understand the effort-reward dilemma. Lots of effort for only a handful of views sometimes makes me wonder why I bother. 🤷I love watching your videos especially when you're in the Burren. It has a very unique vibe. More power to you! Btw, that was fairly watery porridge! 😂

It has been a small but essential change for me. See you soon pal

Hi, just watched this video. This year has been awful for me, injury leading to anxiety. I'm similar to you...packing the kit (anxiety levels go up) and just getting out the door (anxiety levels increase more) and then the end result is not going out camping, as you say its easier not to do it. Then I regret it the next day and I beat myself up a little about it all. But the crazy thing is I know that I will enjoy it all once I am out there in my tent and the outdoor environment??!!! Its good to see I am not the only one as I always think that its just me and that something is wrong with me, but I wanted to say 'thanks' for sharing all that in the video I watched it all the way through, so I will be checking out some of the other videos you have made. I very rarely leave comments and replies on youtube, but reading through them I can see you have a lot of support for your channel, so keep up the good work and thanks again for sharing the personal stuff!

Thank you so much for the comment. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and talk about how anxiety effects me and I was taken back to hear other stories.. thank you so much for sharing and keep in contact. Really appreciate it. As for packing. I haved hard on this since this trip and got my packing down to less than an hour. Absolute anxiety calmer. I may create a video explaining my progress and see if it helps people. 😊

You're a legend mate, well done, don't waste your time with people who don't appreciate your work, these individuals can't accept nor achieve what you have achieved so their envy turns into jealousy then nastiest at the end the only way they can express themselves is by becoming keyboard warriors and leave bad and negative comments, keep up the good work, advice for the rest of us and more importantly enjoy what you do 👍

My channel is even smaller than yours and I maybe get a couple of comments per video but sometimes you get the odd crazy having a go. Your right its a bit frustrating when you have put so much effort and time creating something only to receive hate for it. I get out at least once a week now and sometimes I shoot a whole video put the content onto the computer and do nothing with it because I run scenarios through my head about what people may interpret I have said in the wrong way. Its the internet, when I was younger you used to check the comments for a giggle because you knew people would react to things that has be said. Now its just a bit more vitriol. Some TH-camrs reply's to the comments aren't the best either and you can feel that they are getting a bit tired of it. Block button is the best way and try to forget about it. Great wee chat as always 😉

Hi Martin, Thank you for sharing this video! Very good insights on how we sometimes sabotage ourselves out of doing something we really like and enjoy, and how we can try to revert the trend or find better ways to cope with triggers. Great advice!
As for nasty comments, I agree with what you said. Over the years I've come to the conclusion that if someone needs to be nasty to others, especially strangers, to feel good about themselves, that person really has a serious problem with themselves and there's nothing really we can do other than ignore them. Keep going out and make videos of your camping and hiking trips. That's what you love! :)
PS: the bit where you take the shoelaces out of the boots made me think: oooohhh the joy of not worrying about bugs getting in your shoes/boots etc. I had a few experiences in Africa and Europe too, and I got the habit of always putting my shoes and boots upside down or shake them well before wearing them :D

I can honestly say I understand you. It's crazy isn't it. One thing you need to ask yourself " ever regret a day of hiking?" Not me. Can honestly say there isn't one day I regretted heading out. Even a day where it was cut short due to weather or I had to bail a camp. Think it's important to remember the saying we always hear. "It will be worth it when you get out there". Never a truer word said. Thanks for sharing.

Al you can do is feel empathy and compassion for people are SO unhappy that they don't know what its like to be filled with life and get up before dawn to catch a sunrise- or love themselves enough to be alone. Anyone who hurts another person on purpose is suffering greatly EVEN if they don't know it- they are missing out terribly on what it feels like to live a life in which you could not hurt. Let their hate remind you of what love feels like! BTW - I think most of us get some but anxious at least heading out on a camp - its PART of what makes coming home so special - until you get hungry for wildness again - that is what a Pilgrimage is - see the trips as Pilgrimages of self improvement!

I find it helps to separate the packing and travelling, it's easier to make gear choices when you're not forcing yourself out that night, and it's easier after to get out when there's no barrier of packing. Still I think it's pretty normal to maybe only make a quarter of planned camps, at least that's what I tell myself 😬
As for comments, it's easier to say from the outside rather than being the target - but as far as the almighty algorithm is concerned engagement of any kind is king, trolling comments help the channel in the long run so at least you get the satisfaction they're playing themselves

Im loving my radon 1 .
How do you feel about it now in a bit more "normal " weather ?
Im lucky that camping anxiety hasnt really ever got a hold of me .but i do start getting my kit together about a week out especially if im going with a family member or 2 .as im usually providing all the kit and food and route planning and finding potential camping spots via google .but for me thats all part of the fun, the prep .there is a responsibility to get the camp /walk /experience right .we (my son and nephew and i ) set off down to dartmoor last month for a planned walk /camp . It was my nephews first wild camp with new tent etc that id got him for his b'day. So i wanted it to be perfect .it rained hard on dartmoor .so we abandoned it about 4 pm .and drove 1.5 hours to a secret location i knew . Weather turned brilliant and we had the perfect camp id envisaged.
Sometime you just need a back up plan .

I can relate, I think there are two ways to not be anxious, don’t go or go more often and it gets easier. As for the bad comments there’ll always be haters, say it’s the nature of TH-cam , best ignore them and not respond, they’re obviously missing something in their life

They're haters or, unfortunately, are mentally ill. Just like someone you see out on the street who has mental issues we shouldn't take it personally when one of these folks loses it and yells at us. I don't know why I'm such a target for that but it's happened several times to me over the years (yelled at by a street person, threatened, called names, stuff thrown at me). No idea why. I'm a middle aged white woman who otherwise seems to disappear into the background!

New sub, here hare here, just discovered your 'small' channel, not small at all, I can associate with everything you say regarding the build up to a camp, sometimes I have to give myself an absolute 'kick up the aris' in a bishop Brennan way to get myself out of the house, even though when I know I absolutely love the hiking and camping, it is so strange and I do look for reasons not to go. Trolls are trolls because they have zero life hiding under a bridge. Keep it real like you do, ok time to do an eye binge. chin chin

I enjoy your videos and you come across as a genuinely nice and fun person, how anyone can use their precious time to write anything negative is beyond comprehension.
There is so much ignorance and selfishness about. It seems to me that it’s just got so much worse these past few years. Some TH-camrs can be insulting too though. How many videos have such arrogant titles like “your X sucks” or “you’re doing Y wrong”. That is ignorant and insulting too. They could very well be right, but there are other ways of saying it.
Oh and I love your hat 😊

love that steak. thats why I like the trangia, it's mainly stable even if you knock it - it's usually recoverable. the social media negativity is a common thing on here. It's prevalent on the car channels and the other outdoor channels. I think it goes back to that negative side of British culture whereby if you drove down the street in LA with a rolls Royce people would be cheering and waving. if you drove one round here they would be keying it. I don't bother recording my trips cos I just can't be bothered with the workload involved. just ignore the negativity, most people here think your stuff is good.

My channel is tiny !! I never got trolled until I got a hilleberg. Only one troll has left his comments, the others have deleted their nonsense. It was strange that they act hurt, and feel put upon when you call them out , you use facts logic to counter their stupidity and they act like you are the aggressor , like , you are the one who tracked them down and called them the things they called you. It's like they call you names , throw the first punch , then cry when you drop them..Take care out there. .

There are always people who have nothing better to do than be abusive and its good to know you just delete and move on. However, I've seen some comments on the bigger channels you mention and I subscribe to Grizzly Gaz as i think he has a great channel and hes honest, but Messner has responded badly i think to some comments that were fair comments, but he just didnt like the opinion. When you have a big channel and you give opinions, then its only natural to have people who disagree and as long as it's civil, then i see no problem with that. Saying that, people can always switch comments off and just engage in another way, either patreon or something similar. When i watch the BBC or whatever and i disagree with something i don't wish i could comment on it on the bbc. I think if YT took away the chat function for anyone who doesnt pay for a YT subscription, it would solve 99% of the trolls overnight because if they were YT subscribers, they could easily be reported and banned. Anyway, nice jacket and thanks for the video. 🙂

Anonymous access to the Internet has opened the door for a whole legion of people who take great pleasure in being offensive, and the natural reaction of TH-cam video makers to the abuse gives them satisfaction, and so they continue their pathetic campaigns.
Keep making videos, watch your subscriber numbers grow and you will soon realise that there are a lot of people who really enjoy your postings. The others don't matter..😊..👍

@@soletrailThought I'd had a moment and said something but couldn't remember. Since the bike accident and strokes the memory and brain is a bit off. I'm direct about things but not one for attacking you tubers I like and follow😂.
I have that Stanley in white. Absolutely love it for a dram while camping. I never got anxious about the camping, enjoy the organising etc but I do get anxious outside my stomping ground. I'm fine in Wicklow as I know where to go but elsewhere I'm always worried about landowners etc. I'm more used to Scotland where you can camp anywhere in reason. Once I'm pitched I'm fine. Can't wait to get out again once I'm fit.
I'm a tiny channel and I do like constructive criticism and suggestions but people expect a lot especially when we are doing this for our own enjoyment. People who don't upload are usually the harshest critics but they don't really know what goes into making the simplest video. This is something I do as part of rehab while stuck on the house. Like you I want to share what I use and where I go (will go) and I do it my way but people want me to do it their way and get upset if I talk too much or don't get to the point within 5 seconds. I just thanks them for watching and move on.
Anyway. Keep it up. I always tune in.👍
