(1723) Harbor Freight Hitch Pin Lock (JUNK!)

  • Video #1723 highlights the harbor freight hitch pin lock, which turned out to be a huge piece junk because they cut corners on the locking mechanism. That's a shame, because the body of the lock is really well done. Such a waste...

    One thing about any of these trailer hitch pin locks you should consider before using one is where you live and when do you use your hitch. I live in an area where we have long winters and they use salt or a salt substitute on the roads. If you leave your hitch in place like I and most do, come spring you will be removing one of these lock pins with a grinder, hammer and punch. The snow, ice, and salt will corrode the guts in any lock to the point where they might as well be welded shut in just a few months. An acquaintance of mine works for a trailer outfit and he told me that they remove dozens of these things every year with a grinder.

    I've got one these, I don't really use it for security purposes though, just wanted a hitch pin that locks instead of one with a cotter pin. And yeah I had the exact experience with picking it open. First dimple lock I ever tried and really gave me a false sense of how easy those are to open.

    Honestly these things don't need to have a very good lock on them. They're really just there to make it slightly more difficult to steal your hitch so that the hitch thieves will go find another truck in the parking lot that doesn't have a lock and steal that one instead of yours.

    These tow hitch locks are pretty much only used to stop opportunistic thieves. If someone is planning to steal a tow hitch they will usually go for the first unlocked one they come across. These locks are pretty effective as a psychological barrier making the thieves move on pretty quickly.

      The double sided wafer rakes in the goso set work well on a lot of wafer locks I've tried - you don't even need a tension tool, just jiggle and twist. The padlock picks in the goso set are junk tho, by the time you've filed down the thickness to actually fit in a keyway, they're too weak to be useful.

    As a newbie to lockpicking, a crappy cheap dimple lock was a lot easier to pick than a proper made more classic lock like a Tesa te5 (sxe branded) I found in the garage.
    Even worse, I didn't have a nice multipick flag for dimple lock, just a flat flag which was too wide and not curved at all.
    Dimple looks complicated to people not knowing anything to lockpicking, bad dimple locks are even worse for the difference between the feeling of security people have and the real security level.
    Most people would trust the bad dimple lock more than the good pin tumbler.

      Not to in any way talk down how good Bill is, there is absolutely no reason why a (conventional) dimple lock is any more difficult to pick than a normal edge-cut pin tumbler.
      Particularly when they may not have many pin differs, as is normal with cheap junk.

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StyxHackshop any kind of dimple lock has less travel in the pins than a standard pin-tumbler lock, which might have 7 different cut heights over 8mm of travel, where a dimple lock will have 5 cut heights over 3mm of travel, so inherently much easier to jiggle open. Some cheap dimple locks have only 3 cut heights. I really don't know why dimple locks are still being used, it's far too easy to have a full depth bump key.

    Y'all in the former colonies don't actually attach the ball hitch to the car (as is normal)... you have some kind of weird tube i n tube thing to allow one to attach the ball hitch to the car/truck... or not attach it, for no particular reason?

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We used to have the hitch balls attached to the car frame with extra struts. I think that went away about the time chrome bumpers went away, and probably for the same reason: you can trip over a trailer hitch and get hurt, or run into one and perhaps cause damage to something. Our version of H&S probably disallowed them. Or maybe the yuppies just decided they were ugly.
      So now we have frame struts that attach a square tube "receiver" that doesn't stick out quite as far as the plastic bumper, and you can insert any of a number of hitch types (including ball and pintle) into the receiver and pin them in place.
      You can also use the receiver to hold a bike rack, or a boot of some sort to hold extra stuff that won't fit in the minuscule boot of a modern car.

      I'd guess only drunks, dopes, and idiots would steal a hitch. Most would probably see the Master #3 locking the trailer to the hitch ball and decide it was easier to just pull the pin holding the hitch into the receiver and take the trailer or boat that way.
