  • In video 1733 we'll look at a 1960s era storefront lock made by DOM. Beautifully machined with a gear actuator, this represents a different (and better) era of high quality locks.

    "German lock needs a German pick" at 2:20 cracked me up. Years ago I read in the great book "How to keep your Volkswagon alive forever", use Bosch replacements... your German car likes German parts or something to that effect.

      "I'm goig to use a 15/1000" What, 15/1000?! Using fractions of a thousand doesn't automatically makes it metric, or "German" :-)

      @aandykf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dbijenhof No, but the fact that the pick is from Germany (how he mentioned) makes it German.

    I'm not a collector, but as I'm 50 yrs old now, I have a deep appreciation of the art work and packaging that went into items from the 50s,60s and 70s. That original box was rather lovely to look at.

    Good job! I hate it when the warding is at an angle, almost turns the pick into a tension tool. On the other hand, it would give the last nudge when you really need it on a spool.

    Currently training on a Vachette lock, the keyway is similarly nasty, and I'm sure the springs are strong, and there might be at least one spool. Living in France means you mostly find used locks with a euro profile/keyway and a lot of dimples locks (which I avoid for the moment).

    Just watch u amazes me. Every American lock still stumps me. I've opened 2 on luck.

    • @doublejaylar
      @doublejaylar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trick I've found with picking American Locks, is to use a flatter tipped (not rounded where it touches the pins) & very small hook, with fairly light tension. The pins are smaller in diameter than in most locks & the more rounded hook tips tend to slip off, or are difficult to center on each pin as you try to lift the stack. Some pickers add a small notch to a skinny SSDEV hook in .0015", just to ensure they're lined up & they use that pick only for American/Masterlock picking. Best of luck!

    • @michaelkartman3543
      @michaelkartman3543 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had a lot of luck with an 0.18 Gem or any 0.15 medium hook with a fine, flat tip. And you must use extremely light tension, just enough to make one or two pins bind. Top of the key way is the only way for me with these locks as well. Good luck my friend! 🤙

    Well done !
    I have one of those acrylic locks like that, that has a cylinder at each end, and cam that turns in the middle. Mine is a dimple lock for practice and to see inside as you pick.
    What is the purpose of this style of lock? Where would it be used? And why cylinders on both sides keyed differently?

    • @ib9rt
      @ib9rt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a standard modular design used in European door locks. The cylinder fits into a door such that the door can be locked and unlocked from inside and outside. Both cylinders are keyed the same so that a single key can be used. Doors using such locks may have multiple deadbolts top, bottom and side all operated from the same mechanism.

    I'd like to under stand why the other core, the one not being picked, doesn't prevent the actuator from turning. Since the end of actuator travel seems to be at the end of core rotation, I would that it is still engaged with the actuator gear at that point, which would keep the other core from rotating it in the opposite direction. I'm not suggesting that you gut it. But I'd be curious to see a close up of the actuator area while alternating between the two cores to operate the lock. And is the actuator free when the cores are in the locked position, or can you move it directly with your fingers (i.e.; is the bold vulnerable to manipulation on a locked door)?

    • @sebastiannielsen
      @sebastiannielsen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems that when the lock is in the upright position, the actuator piece on the actual cylinder, have just passed the pin on the actuator gear, and then its free to move - and thats why the bolt is only moved during the last part of the rotation - think like how a lever lock works. I do not know if the actuator is "deadbolted" or if its the "responsibility" of the lock casing the lock is actually mounted in, to block the bolt when extended. But a deadbolt function would be easy to implement aswell, just have a blade spring that touches both cylinder actuators. This spring is then lifted by either of the cylinder actuators, until it reaches the actuator pin in the cogwheel, and then the spring lifts a block or similiar that blocks the cogwheel actuator from rotating.
