Liberty City seems really dark and Hazy/foggy cause of the buildings, Alderney may look kinda sunny that looks like GTA SA Flint/Red County cause it take place on the hills but for LC, it's gonna be dark and hazy cause of the ambience and the buildings
I just interpret it as the town of Bullsworth itself being out of date with the rest of the world. It's set in 2006 or 2007 but the setting is purposely retro as a way to appeal to different generations of the many players (us) for relatabilty. I think it definitely worked in their favor and made the game even more unique. That's just my 2 cents.
Congrats Sweg, you deserve it ! i’m 19 and i remember just getting high and watching every Insanity Edition video back to back my junior year. Keep up the dedicated work, we all notice and appreciate what you do for the Bully fans
I always assumed present day, so when the game came out, in 2006. In one of the missions Jimmy does for English teacher Mr. Galloway he mentions ways he has tried to stop drinking including looking at "dubious sites on the internet". So since the internet is mentioned, it has to take place in the present. It's just that some characters are stuck in the past, like the Preps and the Greasers, with the way they dress.
Well done on 100k dude. I've been subbed since you were on 1k. Great video content and ofc my love for Bully kept me around. Keep it going. Stay you. And from the vid, love you too.
Bullworth could just be a town that doesnt evolve as fast, maybe due to slow economy or something. I confident the game took place around 2000s, specifically 2006 and not anytime before that because of that one tag "WHY YOU GREASEBALLS STUCK IN THE 50'S???". The people in bullworth (like the greasers) are stuck in the past due to slow economy + they live in the bad part of town. Also explains why many people hate the town, such as Christy's dislike of bullworth -" I can't stand it here! What if a never leave Bullworth?!"
You are my one and only favourite TH-camr who still talks about Bully to this day, congratulations Swegta on 100k subs I have been around since like 10k (i think) 👏🏻
Just because the game has some references to different time periods, doesn't necessarily make it from them, the technology present in the game and the way people speak and behave makes me believe that the game should take place exactly during the time it was released, which is around 2005-6, the devs probably didn't put as much thought to it as we do, and just decided to put in references of their liking, but I severely doubt they wanted to give the vague impression that we are in a different time period.
To me, Bullworth is just stuck in the past. It really helps with the game's theme of adults being unnaccepting of new ideals. I mean, they still think bullying is helpful in building morale lol
For me, it takes place around 2007 because that's when I first played it and because that's when I, like Jimmy, started high school. The memories are just too strong
My theory: It takes place in 2007 because there is a poster saying 2007. And if it took place in 2006 or 1980 or 1950 which poster would have the year 2007 written on it? Definitely 2007.
It is very clear that although the game says it was set in the mid 2000s, it clearly wasn't back in the mid 2000s. By that time It wasn't uncommon to see older kids with phones smsing each other, kids walking around with mp3 players and first generation ipods (how else did they listen to music?). The internet definitely played an integral part in everyones lives by then. All of the above was clearly evident in gta 4. In addition, even by the late 90s, most high schools and all universities had computer labs. I would say the late 80s, to early 90s are the most accurate years this could've taken place, taking note of both the language used and the arcade games.
Because I was going through high school and was playing this back when it came out the time period will always be 2006 for me. But I know Rockstar purposely made the time period feel vague so everyone could get a feeling from it. Another reason, coupled with the tone of the game, that makes Bully timeless. Hope they do the same for the sequel!
That's sort of what I thought. A then-modern time with a town stuck with old architecture and cars. The banners around the school could simply be things Crabblesnitch was proud of from when he attended Bullworth Academy.
Well done on hitting 100K sweg I've been watching your videos for a long time I'm not going to state it because I don't want to seem like I think I'm the better fan because I've been watching your for a long time but congratulations this is a huge milestone!
Just tell Sweg about it, or he'll be checking on the next time he looks at the current Patrons/Members count then he'll proceed on typing your YT Account name on the end of the vid

It's definitely 2006. One big thing no one mentions: the school has African-American students. The game takes place in New Hampshire which is predominantly white, and prior to the 1970s it would have been almost all white. Actually, it probably would have stayed all white until the 1990s because some New England towns were infamously "sundown towns", or towns that excluded blacks and other minorities after sunset. So, within that historical context, Bully takes place at the very earliest, in the 80s. Other context clues and one explicit dialogue about the internet confirm it's set around 2005-07.
If I had to put a pacific date on it, an alternate 1996 this way laptops can exist and older cars still aren’t supper uncomand but 70s/80s fashion is in style
When I played it around 2008ish, I just assumed it was set at the current time. Recently, I watched a video about when Archer was set (also very anachronistic) and it said something along the lines of how if JFK wasn’t assassinated, technology would have advanced much more quickly and we would have had earlier versions of technology we have now and didn’t really develop until the 2000s (internet and cell phones) in the 1980s. I didn’t really understand it, but it was interesting and could apply here.
That whole retro-futuristic thing that Rockstar planned for _Bully_ during its development sounds awesome. Reminds me of _GTA 2_ where that game incorporated 1950s vehicles and futuristic weaponry like an electric gun.
I think it maybe takes place in the 90s or the early 2000s reason because there are 90 styled computers in the library and for the 2000s because the game was made in 2006 when ever games are made they are sometimes take place the year it was made
As happy as I am with Bully as it eventually came: Fucking hell, does a retro-sci-fi Bully sound awesome! Or any retro-sci-fi game for that matter. I feel like there are way to few of those, especially open-world ones. And congratulations to 100k, Swegta. Let's hope that Bully 2 is confirmed soon so that you can get the one-million-mark by being the best news-channel concerning Bully on TH-cam.
They mentioned the internet and other modern technology several times, so I would say 2005/2006. The town of Bullworth is just stuck in the past (having a real small-town-USA attitude like somewhere like Smallville), and the school is just stingy when it comes to technical equipment like T.V./computers etc.
I think the time period is a mix of 80s and 90s with technology from between 2003-2006. Some shows has some feel that’s similar to Bully, IE Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina and Steven Universe.
*i think it was set somewhere in the late 50s or early 60s. greasers became a thing until the 70s, hence an easter egg when one of the greasers mentions ponyboy from the outsiders. the preps are the socials and the greasers are the outsiders. (i also think theyre fans of the 80s bc of that, plus Johnny represents Johnny Cade and Peanut represents Dallas Winston. if the phrase "JOHNNY! A FIRE!" doesn't give you a hind idk what does.) plus i know theyre fans of the karate kid bc of the skeleton costume, sweeping the leg move while you're fighting, and your first bully is Trent. a blonde hair, blue eyed boy who has his own click following him and beating you up, like Johnny Lawrence.*
There’s a Calendar thats placed on the year 2007. You’ll find it in the school hallways and inside the chemical plant control room. The game takes place in 2006 when jimmy gets dropped off at bull worth. And ends in 2007 at chapter 6 (endless summer)
Rockstar did a good job of making the game be relatable to different generations by making it hard to guess when it is set but it still has a specific setting nonetheless. We know it's set in the same universe as the 3D era GTA games and Manhunt because cars from those games make an appearance in Bully. In a mission early in chapter 2 Mr. Galloway makes a reference to watching pornography on the internet. The internet became available to the public in 1991 and started becoming more mainstream after 1995. Laptops were also available in the 90s as well so the one in Bully means nothing. Also take into consideration how Jimmy doesn't have a phone which would make sense if it was set in the mid 90s as it would have been too expensive for a kid to own one back then. My guess is this game takes place after San Andreas in 1992 but before GTA 3 in 2001. The 90s setting also makes sense because it's a middle ground between the generations most likely playing the game, people born in the 80s, 90s and the 2000s. School for these generations was more or less the same so a middle ground setting is plausible.
Don't forget to mention that you got verified in the next video, and congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers man, been a subscriber from 2014, it took you years to get here, but the journey was fun, and I'm so happy that I participated. Love you!
Based on my knowledge, the game is set either in the 90s or 2000s because in the mission "Hatrick vs Galloway" Mr. Galloway mentions in the cutscene "looking at dubious sites on the internet". Internet wasn't around until the 90s commercially hence the timeframe is 90s or 2000s. Did anyone else pick up on this?

Ive always loved the idea of the time period and I feel like the time period just varies depending on when and where i am and what im doing or who im dealing with. But congratulations on 100K Sweg!!!! Im so happy for you dude thank you for doing what you do cant wait for the other videos this week.
It felt like the 1980s also the graphics in Bully for the PC Version looks similar to GTA IV but GTA IV looks darker and grey.
Liberty City seems really dark and Hazy/foggy cause of the buildings, Alderney may look kinda sunny that looks like GTA SA Flint/Red County cause it take place on the hills but for LC, it's gonna be dark and hazy cause of the ambience and the buildings
@@BRUNOvsALADEEN Also Alderney takes place in New Jersey.
That's the canon answer from rockstar
Congrats Sweg, you deserve it ! i’m 19 and i remember just getting high and watching every Insanity Edition video back to back my junior year. Keep up the dedicated work, we all notice and appreciate what you do for the Bully fans
One of the shoes that the npcs wears is the Jordan 5 that released in 1990 so I’m gonna imagine it’s set in the 1990s or the 2000s
Fall 2005 - Summer 2006
When ever I play bully I get a feeling of late 90s to early to mid 2000s
There’s actually a poster in the school you can find that specifically says live concert 1979
I think bully takes place in New England and probably the 2 thousands I don't know
The intro of Jimmy hitting the TV will always be awesome.
To me, Bullworth is just stuck in the past. It really helps with the game's theme of adults being unnaccepting of new ideals. I mean, they still think bullying is helpful in building morale lol
The article: Roman soldiers with guns is an anachronism
Fallout NV fans: well, in fact...
Holy shit I remember first subscribing at like 30,000. You've come so far!
If there isn't another video solely about Sheldon, I'm going to scream
when bully 2 drops we will have a better more accurate understanding of the time period
You’re awesome to have a hundred thousand subscribers man!
*SWEGTA Uploads Video*
me: DROP THE LOAD
Definitly 2000s 2006-2007 and their style is just old af classy
Its set in the 2000’s where Dr Crabblesnitch wanted to keep a retro feel and the greaser style instead of dying out only became more popular
I believe the game starts in August 2006 and ends in May 2007.
2006 but in a weird old off the grid town nobody really knows about.
That's sort of what I thought. A then-modern time with a town stuck with old architecture and cars. The banners around the school could simply be things Crabblesnitch was proud of from when he attended Bullworth Academy.
Bullworth is a town that's stuck with old technology and old architecture for uhh, "historical reference"? For tourists to come to
Well done on hitting 100K sweg I've been watching your videos for a long time I'm not going to state it because I don't want to seem like I think I'm the better fan because I've been watching your for a long time but congratulations this is a huge milestone!
Man I been watching your vids for years, much love to the most deserving of 100k subs TH-camr. Couldn’t think of anyone else I’d rather see with 100k
Awesome video, SWEGTA! Can't wait until my name gets shown in your outro. Huge supporter!
Just tell Sweg about it, or he'll be checking on the next time he looks at the current Patrons/Members count then he'll proceed on typing your YT Account name on the end of the vid
Brüno Baron Cohen Yeah, I’ve been a member since early April so hopefully it’ll be updated soon. But I know Swegta is a busy guy. 😊
Bully has to take place in 80s+. Before this arcade machines didn’t exist nor laptops
Dark sleek laptops in 80s?
I found the anachronisms pretty obvious from the start (I mean they even have greasers) this timeless feel became the most beloved aspect to me
Bully takes place in 2006. Have any of you ever attended or visited an old university? Most of them are still old fashioned.
Bully was released in 2006,that doesn't mean it's set in 2006,that's not evidence
it take place in 2006, thats all. there is poster who mentions 2007, and Rockstar dont mention it because its OBVIOUS, like for exemple GTA 5 we all know its 2013. it reminds you of other times because your personnal experience (+ Jimmy Hopkins was born in 1991)
It's definitely 2006.
Hopefully it takes place like somewhere interesting.
ya. and wassup bro. LOL.
100KingDezzy sup bro
@@MidnightClubStillCancelledSoz nothin much just chillin
100KingDezzy good to hear that fam, nuthin much for me as well.
@@MidnightClubStillCancelledSoz 💯
When I played it around 2008ish, I just assumed it was set at the current time. Recently, I watched a video about when Archer was set (also very anachronistic) and it said something along the lines of how if JFK wasn’t assassinated, technology would have advanced much more quickly and we would have had earlier versions of technology we have now and didn’t really develop until the 2000s (internet and cell phones) in the 1980s. I didn’t really understand it, but it was interesting and could apply here.
Congrats! I Hope you get 1M
That whole retro-futuristic thing that Rockstar planned for _Bully_ during its development sounds awesome. Reminds me of _GTA 2_ where that game incorporated 1950s vehicles and futuristic weaponry like an electric gun.
I've been watching for 2 years. Congrates Swegta. Good luck in the future.
Congrats on the 100K subs!
I think it maybe takes place in the 90s or the early 2000s reason because there are 90 styled computers in the library and for the 2000s because the game was made in 2006 when ever games are made they are sometimes take place the year it was made
Swegglz, you're verified now! Congrats! Keep up the great job, you magnificent bastard!
I’m in shock! I’ve been watching you back when you had 200 subs & look at you now, 100 fucking K. You earned it! :)
Well Mr Galloway mentioned “dubious sites on the Internet” in a mission cutscene. So I’d say it takes place between late 2006 and early 2007.
I finished bully a week ago, btw jimmy died in the last mission, endless summer is a time loop, freaky right?
You really think he died? He could just be in a coma from falling like that
Yeah when you fall almost 50 feat you definitely don't die.
They mentioned the internet and other modern technology several times, so I would say 2005/2006. The town of Bullworth is just stuck in the past (having a real small-town-USA attitude like somewhere like Smallville), and the school is just stingy when it comes to technical equipment like T.V./computers etc.
Congratulations SWEGTA!!🔥
You deserve a 1 million followers!
1:10 is my favorite part
I think the time period is a mix of 80s and 90s with technology from between 2003-2006. Some shows has some feel that’s similar to Bully, IE Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina and Steven Universe.
4 dislikes=Sernandoe’s 4 other accounts
and Nought
Zavier Busby maybe Lipsy Jimmy
He made 78 accounts
6 SWEGTA videos in one week? Feels like Christmas came early
Congratulations Sweg and Keep up the great work on your videos
Love you!
I personally see Bully in 2006, you know just the present day like as Gerry said.
100,000 SUBS! CONGRATS
Congrats on the 100k subs. Keep up the good work bro. And see you in the next video
Did anyone else pick up on this?
canis canem edit was one of the first video games i ever played and i still love it
100.000
Came a long way man.
So glad you keep making good content.
Congratulations on 100k subscribers
You know what would be cool, a bully 2. I'll be willing to wait years for gta 6
