Thankyou. I appreciate this. My great uncle taught me how to hit golf balls but I never developed any real skill or knowledge of the game. I would later go hit the ball and play the holes but never keeping any score. Just enjoying the play. And when I watched on television I couldn't relate to the commentators announcing score so this has shed some light on the subject. Good job.
Awesome, understanding little in the score card for a beginning such as myself is a big thing. I have not made the time to play a game of Golf yet. Some day and with this knowledge makes it easier to follow the game.

I just got into golf about two weeks ago and are learning all of the basics - including how scoring works - so as you can see i'm a total newbie. This is an excellent explanation of how scoring works. I'm still a little fuzzy on calculating the Handicap score but this was an awesome video explanation.

Ok quick question. Someone told me. You have to add the 36 on the total stroke you did on the front 9. Like if my total strokes was 29. Do i need to add the 36 that guve me 65 on the front 9? Or for what i understood. You just add the total strokes front and back of the 18 holes?

This is a great explanation -- I was so confused by the scorecard. What if your handicap is over 18, what do you do with the extra strokes?
I’m a beginner, but I think you start again for second and third handicap strokes (maximum of 3 strokes per hole for a 54-handicap golfer).
I think this is incorrect. USGA says handicaps should be adjusted when players are playing from different tees. White and Red tees both lose 2 strokes off their handicap in this case by subtracting course ratings from each tee: Susan still wins but Bill ties for second.
How does this make sense?? I’m lost.. how did you figure out who got a dot and who didn’t??

How did you get those handicap number??? 2,10,6,9??? and how did you assign them to those particular holes??? Completely unclear.
I'm just beginning golf and I think this video poorly explains it, but I think if your handicap is greater than or equal to the circled handicap then you get a stroke removed... could be completely wrong but that's what I got from this video
Okay, firstly the scorecard is incorrect in that those numbers are the _stroke index_ of that hole. There is no such thing as "hole handicap".
As a general explanation: Stroke Index of a hole indicates its relative difficulty. with 1 being the "most" difficult hole and 18 being the "easiest". The stroke index is determined by a formula. You will notice that they is distributed in odds and evens between the front 9 holes and the back 9. Generally the longest 9 holes gets odd stroke indexes and the shorter get even stroke indexes.
For practical purposes, stroke index really only comes to play in stableford format (in stroke play you would simply deduct your course handicap from your gross strokes to get your nett strokes for the round).
As an example, if Player A has a course handicap of 2 it means they get 1 additional stroke (which they use to _deduct_ ) from they gross strokes on the two holes with the hardest stroke indexes (i.e. in this case hole #9 and #17). Conversely, a player with a course handicap of 21 for example will get 1 additional stroke to deduct on all 18 holes, but will get ANOTHER stroke (i.e. a 2nd stroke) on the first three hardest holes (#9, #17, and #6).
As an additional illustration. Say Player A made 4 strokes on the par 4 #9th, he would deduct his 1 stroke (because of his course handicap and stroke index of the hole as explained above) and get a nett of 3 shots (which is a nett birdie and thus 3 points). If Player B also shot 4 on #9 they could deduct 2 strokes and get a nett eagle which = 4 points.

@@diogeneslantern18 That is helpful, thanks. I think the confusion between handicap and stroke index is furthered by the fact that scorecards often list the index under a “Handicap” title.
So pretty much any hole that has a handicap of 10 or less the player gets a handicap for that hole and that adds up at the end. Ex. Mike had 10 holes marked as handicap so his handicap is 10?
RippinLip101 - You need to know the course handicap based on the golf course slope in order to determine the # of strokes a player receives... In the case of this course (Sandwich Hollows) the course has a slope rating of between 122 and 120 - You can find this info out from the pro shop, the club's website or, more often it is printed on the score card. You then use one of the online handicap calculators to determine your personal course handicap for this course... www.usga.org/handicap/slope_calculator/index.asp You then give a stroke on each hole beginning with the hardest holes first, until you meet that course handicap total... For example... If your personal handicap is a 10, and the slope rating for the course you are playing is 122, using the online calculator your course handicap would be a 13. This means you get one stroke on each of the 13 hardest holes. Everyone playing the round does the same thing so this levels the playing field.
Good start, but you should separate the explanation of handicapping holes from handicapping totals.
The hole handicap only has meaning if you're playing a Match. Playing Medal format (18 hole individual score) you only need to take the handicap from the gross total.

this is not correct. when playing stroke play, it doesn't matter which holes a player gets a stroke on, because all that matters is their accumulated final score. however, it DOES matter in match play, because each individual hole is a match in itself. also, there seems to be confusion about "handicap index" and "course handicap." the numbers in red in the video are incorrectly explained to be the "handicap index" when in fact they are one's "course handicap." there are different calculations for determining each.

Brady Potter yes, your _course handicap_ is subtracted from the gross score. but to find your course handicap use this: (slope rating/113)*handicap index
@@Jeff-tj4tx Thank you. Too many people confuse handicap index with course handicap - and it is the first thing to know when talking about "handicaps". If a person is incapab;e of understanding it, they are incapable of explaining it.
Handicap is pretty stupid if you ask me worse players already take advantage of shorter distance witch makes it fair already
Now wait a minute. According to that calculation formula Jim would be a 5 handicap. Where did 2 come from?
Your course handicap is determined before you play and is not an indication of what you're expected to score, but rather what your expected best possible score would be. People only shoot their handicap or better between 10-20% of the time. It's a best possible outcome, not a yardstick.

like your video but handicap is dumb, unless you're really handicapped, u shouldn't get an advantage if you're not good, why should the better player get penalized for your shortcomings, jim wins period.

On big tournaments, of course. And there's no reduction there. If you're playing a round with some friends, it's a way to make it competitive among players of different skill level. :)
