    Thank you so much! I went golfing today and while i was keeping score i noticed the handicap or Men's HCP on the card and instantly became curious about it, becuase i wasn't sure if I needed to keep score diffirently. Without a doubt my mind is set on playing a match type game the next time i play with three people. Oh and I don't have a handicap yet for any course but i generally would consider myself at a 9 but hey thats just me. Im a nine :)

    If everybody has a +18 handicap, do you offset the strokes taken off when playing match play? My buddy and I are currently 40+ handicaps while we work to get our 20 rounds of golf in, so we'd have 2-3 dots depending on the hole difficulty. It would be cleaner/easier to score if we shaved off 36 dots but wondering if that's allowed as it wouldn't be as forthcoming about our handicaps (and assume would complicate updating handicap after the round).

    to calculate one's course hdcp, simply divide the course slope by 113 and multiply by your index. for example, if samantha's index is 16 and she was playing from the red tees, that would be:
    course hdcp = (119/113)*16 = 17

    • @mclarkallen
      @mclarkallen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You almost got it. Divide the slope of the tees you are playing by 113. A course does not have a slope, but each set of tees has a slope. Now maybe someone took the easy way out and did not bother developing a slope for each set of tees, so you have to use what you have....

    Some cards for match play are simpler than that. Along the bottom of the card it just has the holes of difficulty in a line. Such as:
    Stroke: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8............
    Hole: 6 4 2 8 7 1 5 3..............
    So if player A gets handicapped at 4 they will receive a stroke on holes 6, 4, 2 and 8! If player B is andicapped at 6 they will get the same holes as player A plus holes 7 and 1 on that line etc.

    • @diogeneslantern18
      @diogeneslantern18 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will never find a legitimate course where odd and even stroke indexes are distributed on a single 9 as per your example.

  • @brian7908
    @brian7908 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You say that #7 is the hardest hole with a hcp of 1, and #18 is the second most difficult with a hcp of 2. However, the front nine is always odd and the back nine is always even. So isn’t #7 the hardest only on the front nine, and #18 the hardest on the back nine? For example, hole #14 is hcp 8, so the 4th hardest on the back nine, not necessarily the 8th hardest on the entire course. In fact, while the 4th hardest of the back, it could still be harder than the number 1 hcp on the front. I assume this was done to make sure that strokes given in match play are more evenly spread over the course rather than all on a single nine. That was always my understanding. Why else would the front always be odd and the back always be even? Is my understanding wrong?

    • @diogeneslantern18
      @diogeneslantern18 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the general rule, but if the back 9 is significantly more difficult it can be assigned odd stroke indexes (as per the USGA Handicapping Appendix E). My club's championship course has it this way.

    I thought if you had a handicap of 12 and on one of your handicap holes that you are allowed a stroke you can take it as long as its not par or under. If thats not the case then it does not matter which holes you take them on. If you are a 12 then you would just minus 12 strokes. Why would it mater what holes you get them on?

    • @Jeff-tj4tx
      @Jeff-tj4tx 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      in stroke play it doesn't matter--you just subtract the 12 strokes at the end. however, in match play the less skilled player gets one stroke on the 12 hardest holes. this makes it more equitable. if this wasn't done, the more skilled player would more than likely win those harder holes, and the match.

    • @mclarkallen
      @mclarkallen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff, You are correct. But in her example they all got strokes on the hardest hole.

    I think you did match play wrong.

  • @darkshadowsx5949
    @darkshadowsx5949 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    i see... i dont like how handicap is calculated. my group doesn't care about winners. we play for fun and try to help each other improve.
    we dont want to pay the yearly USGA fee to use a handicap and be able to calculate scores differently. so we do stroke play without handicap.

  • @mclarkallen
    @mclarkallen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    When using handicaps on match play, I have always considered the lowest handicap player (A) to get zero strokes. Then you subtract his handicap from each of the higher handicap player's handicap and use that amount of strokes for each player. in your example 17 -10 gives player B 7 strokes using her hole handicaps. So on his hardest hole, A gets no strokes, but B gets 1. Again in your example, A and B would tie # 7 (handicap 1 for men and women). You do the same thing for player C. Subtract 20 (player C's handicap) from 10 (player A's handicap). Player C gets 10 strokes, starting with his hardest hole. It is really not fair to the higher handicap players to give the lower handicap player the same amount of strokes on the hardest hole. Score it using my method and your method and see who wins the $ playing for 1 $ / hole................. Your way, jim won 6 holes, Samantha won 3 and Josh won 1. Jim won $9. And Samantha won $2 but lost $3. Josh lost $5 + $2. My way jim won 5 holes, Samantha won 3 and Josh won 2. Jim won $5 and Sam won $1 but lost $2. Sorry Josh you lost $7 her way but only $4 my way. Isn't that more fair? Now play for $10 a hole.... even more fair my way, right?

    • @troutbum8699
      @troutbum8699 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the way I've always known. Set the lowest handicap to zero subtract his handicap from the rest. Far easier to keep track of strokes.

    Ok. My Wife and I just wanna go and have a game of golf. We're not members and we have no handicaps. I guess she can use the closer tees but how will we know how to score? Even tho, I guess we'll work off 28, will she get more shots than that for being female? You're gonna have to excuse the ignorance, as neither of us knows what we're doing. We just fancy a game of golf.
