The other problem with the shade of red that they chose for Halle Bailey’s Ariel is because the ocean is already so dull, it causes her hair to look like it blends into her skin. Making her hair a much more vivid red would have added more color and contrast, and made her more of a fantasy character.

I may be completely off topic here but.... eh.
The most stupid thing they did is to make the sea not vibrant at all. Including swapping species for the two friends (one became a land crab and the other not an albatross). Sea life is so vibrant they can make you look at zoos pitifully. Even Shark Tale can be referred if they do any homework with existing 3d sealife movies, or if they just take a look at actual sealife documentaries. It's a shame. Not to mention now there will be no Melody existing in the future because now Ariel is asexual.

They cgi’d the dress into the darker blue that’s in the movie, so the actual dress that was made for the movie looks sort of like the redesigned one if I remember correctly. I think the original dress almost looked like it was painted with watercolors.

I have enough interest in Chinese culture that i started to leave a comment, and then i wasn't sure about stuff so i googled, and honestly I'm just gonna c+p the wiki section on the color red in Chinese culture (note i also know enough to know this is not fully comprehensive of all red's historical associations etc but it'll do)
Red (红; 紅 hóng), vermilion (丹 dān), and crimson (赤 chì) are associated with masculine yang energy and fire, good fortune and joy. Red is the traditional color used during Chinese New Year and other celebrations, including weddings and wedding gowns. Chinese reds are traditionally inclusive of shades English might consider orange or warm brown.
A hongbao, a red envelope stuffed with money, now frequently red 100 RMB notes, is the usual gift in Chinese communities for Chinese New Year, birthdays, marriages, bribes, and other special occasions. The red color of the packet symbolizes good luck. Red is strictly forbidden at funerals as it is traditionally symbolic of happiness.[7] The names of the dead were previously written in red,[citation needed] so it is generally somewhat offensive to use red ink for Chinese names in contexts other than official seals.
In the People's Republic of China, red remains a very popular color and is affiliated with and used by the Communist Party and the government.
Meanwhile from the section on blue/green (there's not a distinction between blue and green in Chinese) "[blue/green] was associated with health, prosperity, and harmony." Plus everything with like, jade and stuff.
So honestly, green is a WAY better fit on every level lmao. Also i now feel weird knowing they always put Mulan in red text.

Belle's redesign looks too victorian. The golden hue is perfection but the gown should look more like something out of Marie Antoinette's wardrobe. The Snow White redesign looks really neat, I love how simple yet elegant it is. Apparently a lot of that movie is being reworked in reshoots, so it is likely that costume design will change a bit as well.

I think in the animated original movie, indeed, Belle’s gown IS victorian. It’s gorgeous but absolutely not history accurate. (In fact Cinderella’s gown from the live action is like the original’s Belle one but blue, without the « puffy fabric over the skirt ») and yes, it would have been great if it was more Marie-Antoinette like. Like the side characters, figurants dancing at the end.

It’s almost as if they stirred up controversy on purpose to get people talking about the movie, in order to sell it. It’s unethical, but a lot of brands do this these days to sell their products - intentionally create controversy to get people talking about their products. As some people say, “all press is good press”. Just think of people like The Kardashians, or Trump - they do this too.
Unfortunately, though, when corporations use people like Halle for such purposes without telling them about their plans, innocents like her get caught in the crossfire. And she had to put up with a lot of stress and racism as a result, and didn’t get the fair treatment that she should have received as a Disney Princess. Ariel wears several beautiful dresses in the film, and has gorgeous hair. They didn’t give her any of that. Her costumes for the marketing were good, but that was about it. And she tried very hard.
I personally didn’t like the film, and I definitely prefer everything about the original to the remake, even including the songs (I know that a lot of people like Halle’s voice, but I felt that she did not receive good direction, and prefer the original songs).
However, I don’t blame Halle for that, and no one should. I blame Disney. Anyone who blames Halle for the film failing is vicious, and probably quite prejudiced.
I definitely think that this was a case of Disney intentionally trying to make their film controversial, to drum up interest. Controversy just equals free advertisement for them. They stopped caring about the quality of their films long ago, and Halle ended up being a scapegoat for their unethical practices. It’s a hard lesson for her to learn, but at least she has made a name for herself now and has lots of fans, and hopefully she can navigate the industry wisely from here on out.
I personally had a horrible experience in the industry when I was younger, and it caused me to leave all of my dreams behind, right when I was on the precipice of attaining them. I realised how awful Hollywood is, and how much they use and abuse young women. So I hope that she at least understands that her fame has now given her power to protect herself from those who would use her and cause her harm. And that she learns to differentiate between studios who are passionate about making movies for the sake of art, and those who are interested in making movies because they are creepy, pretentious, greedy, or interested in using her in some way without telling her - just as she was used here by Disney.

As a merman (someone who’s in the Mermaid community) and long time Little Mermaid fan sense I was born I actually loved that they made Ariel’s top apart of her body. It slightly makes her more fishy especially with the added faint scales they put on her shoulders and arms. Sometimes sea shell tops in real life can look either bulky or very funny looking and it’s hard for me to take seriously.
They should have just went with the original prototype top design because it makes her look even more like a mermaid and it is creative how it’s done (almost like her nipples are scales that fade into her body). i just wanna say smthn about the jasmine costume, the live action actually does a half better job than the animation, of course jasmin's costume in the animation is the worst representation of what arab princesses wore, it looks more like what the slaves wore, the live action did a better job at atpeast giving her jewellery and details which is accurate to that time had she been a slave rather than a princess, i'm sorry yours isn't very accurate either but it's ok cuz even we as arabs tend to make our own culture more aesthetic than it actually was, i personally couldn't careless as long as it's enjoyable to watch but i should make it more known

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Isn't that the point? That Jasmine was basically a slave to the patriarchy and a prisoner in her own home? She's forced to wear that outfit to show off her beauty to her suitors and is expected to be nothing but a trophy wife. That's why she hates being a princess.
Also, none of the princesses have ever worn authentic apparels. They're meant to be reflect the beauty standards of the time their movies came out. Crop top popularity peaked in the early 90's, that's why Jasmine wears one.

@@sethzarandona2325 Please stop that nonsense. No one cares about the fact that Ariel was black. It's the reasoning behind her casting that irritates people. Disney is a heartless corporation now that only cares about money. It's no longer actually about making a good movie and making kids happy it's all about the cash. Because of woke culture, minority representation in a movie = CASH. Don't you get it? Disney didn't actually want Halle for her talent. They ONLY wanted her for her black skin because they knew that a black Ariel would appeal to black audiences thus boosting sales. They used her for a cash grab and they used her as a SHIELD. Because that right there, what you're doing is exactly what they knew would happen. Everyone is always accused of being racist or prejudiced in some other way just because they disagree with something or don't like it, if it happens to have a minority or other oppressed type of person involved. We aren't allowed to say one bad word about this movie without people like YOU calling us a racist. Even if our criticism are about other things in the movie that have nothing to do with Halle (like Prince Eric's autotune singing and the terrible dark dreary look of the film) you still insist that we're racist and just hate Halle. More importantly, we aren't allowed to criticize Disney for doing that to Halle because they "gave us what we wanted". They gave us a black princess to admire and look up to so we're not allowed to criticize them or anything they do ever again (Even though they literally already did that 15 years ago with Princess Tiana. A hardworking black woman who is family, career and goal oriented and takes care of herself. All little black girls were inspired greatly by her). Don't be disrespectful and just throw the word racist around for no legitimate reason just because Disney has got you fooled.

Your redesigns for Snow White ans Belle are glorious! Mulan and Belle's changes aren't severe to the point where I needed a redesign, and I love Cinderella as-is (they avoided being a literal remake, so that helped). Not crazy about Ariel's redesigns, but they're much better than what we got, and obviously the skinbearing on Jasmine (and Aladdin) are something I'm glad the remake avoided, given the critiques Jasmine has received as being sexualized and Aladdin was confirmed to be sexualized for the female audience (which reads bad to me since his story could be a metaphor for maturing, and being sexualized isn't the best thing to include in that, imo).

I love these! You showed that you can be closer to the original and still look classy and creative and new and rich like idk disney makes copies of their movies and fails at copying them good? you made the characters come to life, ariel truly felt like ariel, aurora felt like aurora and cinderella felt like cinderella but all very pleasant to look at with fancy textures and good color choices and with enough creative freedom so that it looks actually plausible in the real world but magical. For classic 2d animation your desings cant be too fancy and detailed couse you need to draw it again like 300000 times so in real life it would look much different.
also wanna add I was low key scared of what you were about to do with aurora couse she's my beloved but you did great! this pink also makes her warm design align with her character, she was like a beacon of light and hope in the movie. and with mulan i dont really care I think the green maybe looks a bit too saturated or too dark or too warm idk smth off with the shade a bit to me but over all I think its a small change that makes her feel more closer to the original and to the character.
edit: oh I also wanna say that ariels normal dress is way too freaking short in the original

  • @WTKB82

I disagree on the Snow White one. Her design being bright and colorful makes it unique, it looks like they are trying to replicate the cartoon in a real sense, as opposed to changing it, muting it and going for realism.
While I think maybe the textures can be improved, I think the style and color work better than you’re version.
Also I think Cinderella has the best gown, but I think not giving her a full updo works better to symbolize her freedom on that night, not being bound, being able to let her hair down after being subjugated by her family.
    Idk.

I like Ariel’s looks in the movie but I do think it’s weird Vanessa has maybe 3 minutes of screen time and more variety to her outfits than Ariel gets- and no big I am a human glittery dress?
I agree that Belle’s dress is the biggest offender but it’s tricky to picture just right because I feel the film does a lot wrong like mishandling the visual of Belle and beast as the only characters in blue and her colour palettes warming as she warms to the beast. Something that was great visual story telling in the cartoon the live action just dropped entirely- like that’s WHY her dress is gold why she wore green and pink before then. But in the live action you can tell they didn’t apply that level of thought it was just hey she wore yellow in the cartoon so let’s make a yellow dress here. And I could almost forgive it being simple lacking structure and volume and being the most basic outfit of the whole movie… could have genuinely been fine with it IF they didn’t add the terrible glitter details on that look like glue and glitter for a kids project.

I think the main reason though so many films have poor fashion is because the actors have to wear simple things so the CGI in the background can function if that makes sense. Like if they were wearing something too complicated it would mess with the CGI. CGI is cool, but if it's going to take away important attributes you have to use it wisely. Also a hand made set can still hold to this time and look amazing if not better.

In defense of the live action Mulan (and I haven't seen it nor do I plan to; I gave up on these after Aladdin), I know what they were going for, but Western audiences do not understand it. Okay, so I saw the preview and immediately understood the reference because I LOVE Chinese fantasy dramas about gods and goddesses and spirits. THAT is what they did. They literally changed the character to be more like those goddess or spirit characters. One of my favorite Chinese fantasy dramas is "Eternal Love" (aka "Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms"). They did a movie version, which is shorter by...hours, and they did a TV "mini"series (their miniseries are very long, this one is 43.5 hours long). The main character is a Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit. It's common in these dramas to do those acrobatic aerial movements and fights. They also are gods/goddesses/spirits and don't always wear armor. That's why they did that. The problem is...most Americans do not watch those shows (they should, they are AWESOME). I doubt most Europeans watch them. So, Western countries don't know those tropes. That's why the costumes were that way as well as the movements. I think it was ridiculous to change the character since she is human, but Disney was sucking up to China. That movie was trying to appeal to Chinese audiences and failed since they also didn't like the changes. Mulan is not a goddess in China. Put aside the fact that most Chinese people are atheists, she's not in their mythology as a goddess or a spirit.
    Rant over.
Look up the "Eternal Love" drama if you have several days to kill! It's not dubbed, but you can find it with subtitles. It is worth the 43.5 hours! It's an amazing story that is woven so well. Or watch the movie version.

I thought Jasmine's outfits in the remake were actually great. Way better than what this person made, at least. Back then they didn't exactly have pastel color palettes, everything _was_ extremely vibrant and colorful and since certain dyes were expensive, having vibrant colors were also a sign of wealth and status. Jasmine absolutely _should_ be wearing vibrant colors with many small details and embroidery to show the fact that she is a princess! And she would likely _not_ be showing any skin or wear pants *which is why Disney changed it for the live action.* They were actually _trying_ to be historically and culturally accurate!! And yet her outfit still definitely feels like Jasmine.
