    In 2-stroke snowmobiles they often have a engine output of 80 hp at per cylinder and 400cc. Thats incredible numbers as it also have good durability and fuel economy. It would be a interesting project to convert a snowmobile cylinder to a mx engine. Imagine 80 hp on a dirtbike without any extra weight.

      Being setup for enduro riding, I think it’s safe to say that the Maico engine is a very conservative and docile two stroke for it’s size. I’m sure if the engine was setup for racing (more aggressive ignition, larger porting, higher comp ratio, and higher revving, I could easily see it putting out 90hp at the crank. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone’s done it already.
      Not a two stroke, but another example of a large, yet modestly powered engine, would be the Raptor 700. It makes less power than the YFZ450, but still wins due to torque.

      Bigger displacement single cylinder 2-strokes are different than smaller engines. They can’t put out same horsepower anymore because port size is limited. And have bad fuel economy too. But idea with big 2-strokes are light and they beat 4-stroke bikes when talking about hp, torq and weight. That’s why 700cc is amazing bike but it’s not really reliable and fuel consumption is really bad.😂
      BTW I live in Finland and i have 2020 Maico 700cc and 99 cr 500. Fuel consumption and shaking of 700cc are downsides of that bike.

    Thanks for doing this series, Ken, on a bike most will never get to see in person. This is great and your enthusiasm is just the ticket! I think we were all rooting this bike on for a higher number however the torque output is shear foundation crumbling in itself. As Carroll Shelby once said, “Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.” I hope you continue your content on this bike as it is getting a lot interest around and you are giving us an in depth / real world look into a bike that is super intriguing and you cannot find much about. It sounds like it is de-tuned. A suggestion would be to do a future series on bumping up the HP up and unleashing its full potential. Putting a bigger carb on would be very interesting to see, do the porting you talked about. Don't know anything about that muffler but maybe something more opened up. See about getting that HP number up to what the current crank output is. Either way, keep up the great content on a seriously cool bike!! ;-)

      I think those mods you mentioned will improve it but the pipe is holding down the hp. A drag style expansion chamber for that monster would be massive and wouldn't really fit for Enduro or moto riding.

    Torque is where it's all at. 250's will give a 500 a good drag race but when it comes to a long loose monster hill climb, that same 250 would grind to a stop while the 500 is pulling 3rd gear to the top. That's where this 700 would really shine. 💯

  • @josefrobbins8781
    @josefrobbins8781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Even better to see the numbers compared side by side! Like I said, these engines have so much more to give! People don't realize once you go above 250cc's in a 2 stroke, you run into problems from a mechanical engineering perspective. 500's have to overcome a lot of problems, and lord only know how hard it is to engineer a 700cc single with a piston that has the size and inertia of a paint can, has to be reliable, and not shake itself to bits! Why am I telling you, you already know all this stuff Hoss. In all seriousness the fact you're at 60rwhp, and almost 50tq on all stock/factory form is insane!! I can only imagine what you'd get with some jug work, and a better carb. Also I love JSV Pipes and especially the one you got on, but just a head ups though. The biggest power killer on these bikes when you hop them up is the pipes/expansion chamber not being big enough. While these are sport quad guys--->Dr. Q The Quadzilla King, and FTZ with their 250r Expansion Chambers are some of the great 2 stroke pipe examples I can think of when it comes to making huge/functional Expansion Chambers for Big Bores.
    Keep it coming guys, Looking forward to what ya'll have in store next!

    The thing most people miss when claiming Horsepower should be much higher ,is the limit on RPM this 700 has . A smaller cylinder engine with a higher RPM limit can “ Cram “ more combustion cycles into rotations pera minute than a larger / slower bore engine can. You add up all those “ small cylinder firings “ Vs “ less cylinder firings “. And the answer is clear ….. 10, 000 power strokes will add up to more than say 7,000 power strokes if total power is only thing being considered. Torque however is “ Leverage “ exerted on the Crankshaft in order to get things moving , and as we all know , when you put a “ cheater pipe extension” onto you trusty old Ratchet you can “ Bust that rusty bolt or nut “ loose a lot easier than without it . Leverage is key to torque output, and “ More is better “. Torque puts things in motion & H.P. Keeps it there …. So to speak. ( once things like friction & mass are overcome at least) Glad to see you guys are getting it dialed in and I too would love to see what a larger volume tuned Expansion Chamber and some mods to port timing and a bigger Carburetor could unleash ….. but then Safe RPM range may be compromised….. slinging a “ Gallon paint can size piston” above its sane speed may be costly when things get too much … just ask all those early Hemi Drag racers from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s …..😏😉. Sometimes good enough is just that. ……

    • @Fvission
      @Fvission 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's called volumetric efficiency. The bigger the cylinder, the less time atmospheric pressure (14.7lbs at sea level) has time to fill with an air/fuel mixture. It's even worse on two strokes. In this case, also probably made worse by a very old cylinder design/ports/squish/carb, etc.

    A four stroke piston travels much further down the bore before the pressure is bled off by the valve opening, while a two stroke doesn't even make it half way down before the exhaust port opens. That's why you can lug most 4 strokes and not 2 strokes, they need to be on the pipe. Big bore 2 strokes can be lugged but generally they don't like to rev very high, which explains the tall gearing.

    41mm???? That thing is breathing through a STRAW!!! I run 42mm lectrons on my 250's, and ran 48mm lectrons on my 500's, with airbox filter holes in both. That bike could use at the very least, a 48-50mm Lectron, and definitely some airbox modifications. I'd be willing to bet with those simple changes, you'll be at 70hp and 55-58 ft lbs easily.
    That engine has allot of rotating mass, so doesn't need/like the RPM's of the smaller engines. But the bottom end grunt has to be phenomenal, even in such a docile state of tune....

    A 2-stroke has more torque as Ken explains because it fires every turn. The internal mass has nothing to do with it, except in a inertia dynamometer that calculates accellerations of all the mass, the inertia dyno flywheel mass and the rotation mass of the engine. Large rotation mass of the engine can give slightly lower readings. The importance of engine torque is often exaggerated, the torque at the wheels is what matters and as long you have a great gearbox the horsepower is whats matters how much torque you can get at the wheel (at every given point in the powerband). The engine torque is actually calculated from the horsepower and engine rpm in a inertia dynamometer.

    • @johncamara1650
      @johncamara1650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. But HP is what matters. HP=TQxRPM/5252. So the big TQ number is of no use if it doesn't happen at high enough RPM. And four strokes have an RPM advantage because they can go short stroke, large bore if they want to. The thing that holds back large two strokes is they can't shorten the stroke or they won't get enough port time to inhale enough air to make power. The last generation of 125cc two stroke GP road bikes were making 60hp...with 125cc. Narrow power range for sure but that doesn't matter to expert riders. When they say the 700 has high torque, it's better understood that it makes high torque at very low rpm, thus high hp at very low rpm. The 700 has to seem monsterous at low rpm. And because even national MX riders have a problem running more than 65hp efficiently, the 80hp that the Maico has is really scary.

    • @johncamara1650
      @johncamara1650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh, yeah, two strokes still rule, don't believe all the BS. National MX still bans two strokes above 250cc in the 450 four stroke class for a reason...if they allowed 300-325cc two strokes then nobody would ride a four stroke..

    A heavier rotating mass does NOT increase torque. On the dyno if you had a lightened crank and rods it would rev quicker yielding more hp/torque. All a heavier rotating mass is good for is the stored energy , albeit less torque. That would be good for some riders who like to just lug around and don't really get on the pipe. With a heavier crank the engine isn't a quick up or down rev response to the on and off throttle. A big displacement engine doesn't need a heavier flywheel to help it lug through the mud and roots. As far as the power coming on quicker from a 2 stroke , it's because it fires twice as much.......a 2t fires once every rotation of the crank

    Please don’t break it. It’s the only big bore Maico on the east coast and you guys have it on the dyno like you’re getting ready for the AMA Pro Star Nationals. I hope she’s on display when I swing down to check out the bike museum. 🇺🇸

    Hmm, any aircooled 1982 Maico Alpha 1/490 built in Germany by Otto Maisch had about 45hp. So 40 years and 210cc later we are at 60hp? Otto, you are still and always will be THE MAN...

      There's only so much to be done with a 2 stroke and manufacturers have pretty well found the sweet spot between a usable powerband and a pointlessly explosive and narrow powerband.

    Husaburg 650 makes that from memory. Kx500 with a cr500 exhaust system works well.

    Good desert / supermotard bike...the power of the big enduro and mx bikes we have already is at its limit of what a rider can do with its power, so they won't be winning any races from a well setup 450 500 ..just wide open spaces. kick butt..and to own the beast..

    It's going to get real interesting to see how it responds to modfications. Once the air gets flowing that's when we're going to see the big numbers.💯

    Could you ad a o2 sensor to the exhaust and convert it to EFI? Or can you not do that on 2 strokes?

    Nice bike! That 450F was outmuscled by the other two but that dyno curve was still fat and flat, giving the 4S the edge in deep sand or low traction conditions. Guys you can strap a $100 Garmin GPS to that beast and it'll give you mph.

    There is a channel on YT that has multiple drag races between a Cr 500 and the 700...CR 500 BEAT IT 50 % OF THE TIME!

    • @ericandrews1661
      @ericandrews1661 2 ปีที่แล้ว
