It sounds as if you actually are condoning the rape. That's sick. It's difficult to believe that rape was somehow romanticized by a soap opera and this truly wasn't that many years ago. @@ellencarroll2921 Please do not make ridiculous accusations. I'm not condoning rape at all. That interpretation is on you and you alone. I am observing and commenting on THIS PARTICULAR scene, and the powerful acting. You don't need to give me an educational lecture, which is what you are doing. Btw, I don't see you making the same accusation to all the other comments here which compliment the great acting.
@@ellencarroll2921 That is your incorrect interpretation. I can and do deny it. By the way, have you ever heard of nuance. Do you understand the meaning of nuance? When you watch the original scene and have watched the many Luke and Laura scenes which followed, a discerning person can see that the story line was not a simple rape story. It was much more complicated and, oh yes, nuanced. The writers made it that way. Over the years since it first aired in 1979, there has been much discussion about that controversial rape story and their subsequent relationship. The post-rape story line was dreamt up because Anthony Geary became so popular with General Hospital watchers, that the powers that be wanted him to stay on the show. It wasn't originally planned that way. He was supposed to only be on for thirteen weeks. Everything that followed the rape was written for ratings and to keep Geary on the show. I guess you're okay with that? Rape/not rape for ratings is okay with you? Laura protecting her rapist from being found by the police is okay with you? You're good with Laura falling in love with her rapist? I wonder, since you seem to only see this as a black or white issue with no gray in between. To this day the story line is somewhat controversial. I mean, just look at the comments in this thread! Most people are actually able to have an interesting discussion about it. You might look into the history of the Luke and Laura relationship instead of attacking me. Projecting your feelings onto me when all I did was express admiration for the scene and the acting is interesting. You do know that we're discussing a soap opera, not real life? Also, look up projection when you look up nuance. Whatever your deal is, it seems you have a need to project your assumptions onto me. Erroneously. I'm done.
It was so well written…even KNOWING luke Raped Laura…we all fell in love with Luke and Laura…scotty Baldwin cheated on Laura with Bobby spencer…(Luke’s sister that used to be a hooker…until she went to nursing school) lol…You would have to start from the beginning…it was awesome…I watched it in the 70s and 80s lol
Ps…I can’t listen to the song “Rise” without thinking about luke and Laura lol…that’s the song that played while he raped her…to be honest…Laura had feelings for Luke…but she was married to Scotty…lol…
@@ronswansonsdog2833 lol…Exactly…I said that on another post…some woman was like “Luke didn’t rape laura!! They’re married!!” I was like “Ok, you must be younger than me…so back to the early 80s and watch general hospital!! Lmk what ya think lol”
Why the hell does it matter to his kids what happened between their parents way before they became a couple?... their mother forgave him, fell in love with him and it’s really none of the kid’ business what happened before they became a couple and then got married!
It was a way for the writers to explain that what Luke did was heinous and was forgiven the most unforgivable act against another human being. By the time Luke tells Lucky, the real world was very aware of what is now called the #metoo movement and they needed to address that what Luke did was wrong.
I have a serious question. And I'm not trying to come off shrewd or mean. I came across a Instagram video of the song Rise by Her Alpert and one of the comments said it reminds me of Luke and Laura. I'll began looking up Luke and Laura on TH-cam. I came across videos of the infamous scene "at the disco". While looking up other videos of them two, many of the comments say positive things about Luke & Laura. I never watched the show before and I'm confused as to why people "like" the "Laura & Luke" dynamic in this series. Especially after the "Disco incident". What is the fascination with Luke & Laura?? I feel like people should hate Luke.
The only answer is it was the 80s. Different time. It's not a dynamic you would see on national TV now. Now, you can go to subgenres of romance novels for "taboo" couples but back then they were out in the open. Luke wasn't the only rapist hero on TV, trust me. (child of the 80s) At one point there was a TV Guide article titled "Stop Making Rapists into Heroes" - that's how popular that kind of thing was! One of those things you just look back and shake your head. (I will say I was never a Luke & Laura fan. Scotty and Heather were my jam.)
@@blondewriter99 This has nothing to do with era it was in. Rape was wrong in the 80s too. I can't remember all of the details but, in a nutshell, they redeemed the character or Luke and Laura essentially forgave him.
@@rachybaby72 It has everything to do with the 80s. I was THERE. Rape wasn't NOT wrong but you would not get a character like this today on a national TV show. If there is one, please point it out.
@@blondewriter99 I WAS THERE TOO. And the reaction had nothing to do with the era. The writers turned what happened into a "seduction" and people went with it, and it helped that Laura moved past it. The same thing happened with the Todd character on One Life to Live and that was definitely a rape -- and that was the 1990s -- and the character was "redeemed". I, a child of the 80s, never really moved past it, and most people didn't deep down, but we went with it because of how they redeemed Luke. That's it in a nutshell -- and has nothing to do with the so-called "sensibilities" of the time...
Back in the day, it wasn’t really considered rape. Then they started getting some backlash about it. After that it officially was called, “rape.” I also remember reading that Genie Francis thought it was rape- but Tony Geary did not. It was a different time…decades ago.
Nice vid i miss johnathan jackson if he came back as lucky i wouldnt want elizabeth to be with jason anymore or maybe i would but the triangle would be cool to watch
Liz had many gay boy toys. Trust me, Tony is gay! He has never really said he "Slept" with Liz. He calls it an affair, but that does not always physical. He was smooth how he answered questions about Liz.
MY view, as dad, NO "details", for which Lucky was OUT of turn to demand. He was not even a "thought" on being conceived. Like many posting HERE, self-righteous views, many posting here were NOT there. My being over age 50, I seen THAT episode, first hand. He was about to be KILLED, Frank Smith was to have Luke murdered the NEXT day. EVERY phrase Luke expressed to Laura was to get her to LEAVE; she, stayed. She kept "pushing" and him drinking, finally unable to resist, Luke just "TOOK" Laura. NO way was Luke to die with OUT "having" her, to hell with the NEXT day. THAT was the "moment" and he "took" her. Rape is wrong, yes and yet he was going to be KILLED the NEXT day and having several times to get Laura to LEAVE, she, stayed. Luke was going to DIE and the last thing he wanted, was, "her". No care about "tomorrow" as Luke was a dead-man any way.
I never was a Luke/Laura fan. I always refused to accept the 'rewrite' of the 'seduction of Laura'. It was rape, plain and simple. However, IF that is the way GH was going to spin it, then so be it. I don't think the rape should have been brought up again, and certainly not to the knowledge of Luke and Laura's children. Lucky is a punk. He's always so disrespectful and rude to his parents. Of course, it's Luke and Laura's own fault, because they raised him that way. GH just revisited the rape to get high drama and emotion, and lots of discussion. I am no Luke fan but I think it's unfair for him to have to explain to his children what happened long ago, that was actually spun to be a seduction. Not to mention the absolute trauma the children must have to work through. Luke was hailed Port Charles's Hero, now he's just an old, washed up rapist. I think they should have not revisited the rape.
In fairness, these scenes were many years apart. Lucky was told in 98, Lulu in 2008. Couple years before Lulu, Luke and Laura finally had a full on intense episode talking about it. Can find on TH-cam as the “day of reckoning”.
My grandma gets annoyed with me because I refuse to acknowledge the whole Luke and Laura love thing. How the do you get hyped over a relationship that was literally built up right after Luke raped her?
Not at all, he married a woman 10 years his senior. She played hannah Scott on GH, daughter of Roy DiLucca, who was a friend of Luke. Hannah was a FBI informant and brief love interest for Sonny Corinthos.
These scenes remind me of what a great actor Jonathan Jackson was during this time, and how much better this show would probably be if he was still a part of it.

@@lizlee6290 Your statement sounds like it is condoning rape. You can't deny it.
I'm done.
Great edit!
Now I don't understand why Laura married Luke as I never knew about this part of the story
Go back and watch the beginning Suzzque has them all from 1980 in order and you will see why. It was the best storyline ever.
@@gigib.965 yeah me too. It’s the “Luke & Laura Rape” song to me. Sorry Herb Alpert 😂
@@ronswansonsdog2833 lol…Exactly…I said that on another post…some woman was like “Luke didn’t rape laura!! They’re married!!” I was like “Ok, you must be younger than me…so back to the early 80s and watch general hospital!! Lmk what ya think lol”
This woman likes Luke and Laura; with them I can accept it's a soap opera and as a result is fantasy. Their kids had to be so freakin confused though.
See that's whst I don't get. Who the hell would want a FANTASY of marrying your rapist?
Who’s fantasy? I don’t care what genre it is, there is always a line that shouldn’t be crossed and this was one of those times.
Why the hell does it matter to his kids what happened between their parents way before they became a couple?... their mother forgave him, fell in love with him and it’s really none of the kid’ business what happened before they became a couple and then got married!
They're just big drama queens
no woman in her right mind would marry and have children with her rapist
Bc they're gonna hear about it from others, and start asking questions.
Because he didn’t forgot her birthday or crash a car, what he did is a violent/violating crime.
@@rachybaby72 OK I'll wait here until you can point to a rapist redeemer storyline that's on now or been on national tv in the past decade.
Back in the day, it wasn’t really considered rape. Then they started getting some backlash about it. After that it officially was called, “rape.” I also remember reading that Genie Francis thought it was rape- but Tony Geary did not. It was a different time…decades ago.
I put on the song “Rise” by Herb Alpert. It was the hottest song at the disco, and then…
The only thing Luke needed to be ashamed of was his perm
And you forgot one: the rape. Luke needed to he ashamed of forcing himself sexually on a woman...
You don't think he should be ashamed for raping a teenage girl who was married. He was a skunk.
@@rachybaby72 did you actually see it happen
@@joycepino9749 if she had a problem with it she wouldn't have married him and had kids with him
@Uncle Diggie No one saw it happen.
Nice vid i miss johnathan jackson if he came back as lucky i wouldnt want elizabeth to be with jason anymore or maybe i would but the triangle would be cool to watch
i thought that at one time but then he said he had a live in relationship with liz taylor
Why now
I never was a Luke/Laura fan.
Why on earth would you need to reveal this. None of their business!
They don't have a right to know that theur father raped their mother? That very much is their business.
Laura should have told them.
Funny he tells kids two different stories
You have to hear the truth so you don't believe the lies
I don't even know if I know the truth
In fairness, these scenes were many years apart. Lucky was told in 98, Lulu in 2008. Couple years before Lulu, Luke and Laura finally had a full on intense episode talking about it. Can find on TH-cam as the “day of reckoning”.
I haven't watched in so long.
Did they eventually forgive him ? I forget
Yes, she did forgive him, married him and had two children with him.
Terrible he is not the victim no excuses.
Lucky and Lesleylu need to get over it. They act like they were a product of rape. Luke and Laura were in love when they had their kids.
Great scenes
Great acting................sine they sluffed the rape scene years ago....
wow, what a unlikeable and horrid character, cool writing.
Yes that perm is horrible
My grandma gets annoyed with me because I refuse to acknowledge the whole Luke and Laura love thing. How the do you get hyped over a relationship that was literally built up right after Luke raped her?
I didn’t start watching until 2003 but I love lulu, and the new Lucky was so much better
The only real lucky for me was Jonathan Jackson ( the original) I couldn’t stand any of the other ones
This was when the show was good
JJ great acting ❤
Wut the hell are u going on about?
wow
Lol.
TRUE
Excuses for a rape.
Luk 2:14 e and his sister were trash. It was a shame Laura didnt stay with Scottie. Writers made a big mistake with this.
What a bunch of garbage. GH uses the word rise every episode. Sick
Was this Lucky kid gay? I don't remember...just asking.
Not at all, he married a woman 10 years his senior. She played hannah Scott on GH, daughter of Roy DiLucca, who was a friend of Luke. Hannah was a FBI informant and brief love interest for Sonny Corinthos.
No, but as a long time GH fan (late 70s) I can say Luke is gay.
@@yevettebamber4273 You are correct. I've watched GH since its debut in the early 60s.
