As a Hedgehog Engine modder, I can tell you with complete confidence that SEGA has given us several well wishes and votes of confidence over the years, and have an understanding that what they've got here is a somewhat unique community that they can use to gauge the quality of their own software. In a way, the modding community is a sort of sanity check to those poor Sonic Team developers who live out of their offices and focus only on the project. There are enough mods out there, that they can compare gameplay features and stage designs directly to the mods that come out, to see if they've passed a certain barrier of quality in their retail project. Morio Kishimoto has talked about this in an interview before, calling us 'rivals' to surpass and create expectations to exceed and subvert. I think that's an extremely fun and honorable way of looking at it. There's also the unspoken pact in which they know we'll stop buying their games if they stop letting us do this. All these decades, and they're still the Anti-Nintendo.

With how much time and effort they put developing the HE, it is a mystery how Sega never licensed it to other studios. It seems like it had a lot of benefits for weaker hardware in a time where teal time ray tracing was out of the question.
Sonic Adventure and the Hedgehog Engine were pivotal moments in Sonic’s evolution. I hope that with new stuff coming, this is gonna be an era of Sonic the Hedgehog.
PSO2's expansion also uses the Hedgehog Engine 2. The base game was also reworked graphically using the HE2 as well with NGS' release most likely as a means of allowing NGS's specific costume pieces to work within the base game.
So glad someone actually made a video about this, been seeing hashimoto’s video in regard to he on soah city for years and wondering why this doesn’t peak anyone’s interey. Good video btw
As much as I like Unreal, it's sad that they're shelving the Hedgehog Engine. Unleashed, Generations and even Forces have some fantastic visuals. Why do I remember reading that PSO2 also used HE1?
It did. When it's sequel expansion New Genesis came out they reworked the base game to run on HE2 to allow the transfer between games within itself. That makes me wonder if the Sonic Generations portion of SXSG is still using HE1 or if it was reworked within HE2 since according to Sonic Team themselves all of the original HE1 code still exists within HE2.
Sonic Frontiers had a problem with ambient lighting, it had the basic on and off lighting, Sonic doesn’t look like he’s in the world (touching grass) For example his gloves and socks were bright white while standing on grass (not how the lighting should be for this game) There’s some mods to make it more like Unleashed Improved Ambient lighting And Subsurface scattering fix (Fixes his body having bright orange parts of light leaking through his ears arms and stomach)
Interesting stuff. I always found the Hedgehog Engine as used in Sonic Unleashed (at least the PS3/360 versions) to do better than whatever SEGA came up with afterwards. Frontiers felt like the first Sonic game in a while where things were good again.
Why are none of these recent videos getting as much popularity as the others?! These are one of my biggest inspirations for game dev, and I don’t know why the last 2 videos haven’t had as much reach as the others
13:00 i hope not...that engine is still useful for future sonic games or other games in general and it can still delivers high quality visuals! Just look at shadow generations for god sake! 1:10 aaand...as for this i..kinda disagree for the most part i think we can all agree on that only 06 and forces these mainline sonic games have the most bad reputation for the most part games like sonic unleashed, generations, colors, even frontiers and Balck knight recently..(for some reason this game getting some praise too) etc...really have some good reputation and impact on them...and let's not even talk about sonic adventure 1,2...these games are too beloved actually left a huge impact infact.
That has less to do with the engine itself and more to do with the art direction they wanted for the game. In the engine tests they did for HE2, they put Sonic game models in digital recreations of SEGA headquarters, and they look so realistic. It was as if they were physically there in the real world SEGA HQ. The pictures should be on the Japanese Sonic Channel website.
LIKE! SUBSCRIBE! and I promise more cool Sonic Deep Cut videos :) :)
Sonic Sucked Since SA2 via gameplay, and graphics, physics, it only got worse with boost.

@@coatlessalihahahah he made it up (spoiler/joke)
@@guywatchingm3m3s the Morio Kishimoto bit is true, i remember him saying that in an Interview before or during the development of Sonic Frontiers DLC
It's pretty impressive for a 2008 game to look this gorgeous and go into more depths on details like shadows and lighting. It astounds me.
With how much time and effort they put developing the HE, it is a mystery how Sega never licensed it to other studios. It seems like it had a lot of benefits for weaker hardware in a time where teal time ray tracing was out of the question.
I remember they did intend to make it licensed but I don't know exactly why they kept it.
Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 running on the Hedgehog Engine 2 make it the true first HE2 game to release??????
Sonic Adventure and the Hedgehog Engine were pivotal moments in Sonic’s evolution. I hope that with new stuff coming, this is gonna be an era of Sonic the Hedgehog.
You missed the fact that Phantasy Star Online 2 used the hedgehog engine. That game made proper use of the engine’s global illumination
Good call!
PSO2's expansion also uses the Hedgehog Engine 2. The base game was also reworked graphically using the HE2 as well with NGS' release most likely as a means of allowing NGS's specific costume pieces to work within the base game.

Hedgehog Engine is a next gen Blast Processing..
But at the time, the console wasn't ready for Blast Processing

This one should do better. I just released it. :) Thanks for the comment!
I played the video on 1.25x and it sounded a tad more natural to me.
The speech is a bit slow, only criticism
Great research and composition ~

Then why does Sega still rush 3D and even 2D Sonic games now? /j
But still though, Sonic games still gets rushed often.

If source is still kicking HE should too
If they really are making a remake of sonic heroes I’m going to have a heart attack!!! 😧😧😧
Yeah I wouldn't count on it XD
awesome
What is an X thread? Do you mean Twitter or something?
if they are going to ditch HE2, they might as well give it to Godot
Bro is NOT good at unleashed💀😭but a good video nonetheless
Since its locked to the PS3 and 360 its the game I've played the least.
10:23 yet somehow Forces looks way worse
How? Unleashed environments might be pretty but they lack in quality and art direction.
