Jack not knowing how to pronounce “Conquistador” or “Tenochtitlan” really tripped me out! He’s British, of course he’s not familiar with the Aztec Empire.
I was screaming!! Not in a mean or angry way but in a please hear me way lol. Cuz I know once he learns how to say both he’ll be like “ohhhhhhh noooooo” cuz he’s so respectful of things like that.
i mean, my country has virtually no connection to mayan/incan/aztec and latin american culture and yet i still know what they are?? in no way am i trying to be rude, but i feel like if you know at least a bit of world history, you'll know what a conquistador is
The New York Times has just concluded its list of the top 100 books of the 21st century. Would love to see a video where you read the top five or something like that!
Loved Butter! It is so much more than the initial mystery plot as it is packed with rich character development and commentary on rigid societal expectations in Japan
‘Butter’ was a fabulous read, not what I was expecting but definitely didn’t disappoint!! And I’m almost half way through ‘Martyr!’ and myyyy goodness, it’s easily one of my top reads this year - it’s gorgeous 💛
So glad to see "You Dreamed of Empires" on here-- one of my favorite books of the year so far, so unhinged and delightful. Thank you for another great video!
You Dreamed of Empires is amazing, the author uses pronunciation challenges with lots of similar words that force you to sub-vocalize and still end up confused - there is a whole theme of ~what's lost in translation~ that makes all of the similar sounding words feel very purposeful. the book even starts with a "note to the translator" all about language. favorite book i've read this year!!
Jack, I would love to see more vlogs/personal videos from you!! Because i don't know if it's just me, but even tho I know a lot about your book tastes, I don't know much about you as a person! Just an ideia :) greetings from brazil
Kaveh teaches at the university I went to for English/Creative Writing and I never had him teach one of my classes but he did sit across from me in one of my classes taught by poet Donika Kelly. It’s so cool to see the book he wrote in little Iowa City reaching so many people.
If I may be so bold Jack, if you're looking for more (cozy) mysteries I would highly recommend "The Thursday Murder Club" series. This series is an homage to traditional mystery novels, such as Poe, Christie and Doyle BUT with modern twists and sensibilities where the lines between heroes and villains are not so black and white.
I went to the event on Brooklyn and Jack was the nicest person ever! I was so nervous to meet him since I’ve been following him for years and it just so happened that I was in nyc for the week of the event so I of course had to go! The panel was so nice and him and Dustin were super nice, I got to ask a question and chat a bit with Jack before and after and truly I couldn’t have left happier! Thank you Jack❤
I really want to read "Martyr!" but I'm not ready (as an Iranian, lol!) Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks for sharing these recs with us! Happy Summer Jack ☀
Butter is on my reading list for my summer too, I bought it the other week with a few other reads including Blue Sisters (thanks to your vid mentioning it- finished it and love it!). I'm looking forward to Butter because it seems a little unhinged in a good mystery way x
I dare you to find out who that Susie person is and have her on your channel. I think she has an amazing job and it would be interesting to know the background of someone who recommends books to people who also recommend books.
I'm also a negligent subscriber to TBR. I've enjoyed those books they recommended that I've read. Sometimes I don't quite agree with them but I'm always interested.
I think youll really like Martyr. It was a very unique book! I literally just ordered You Dreamed of Empires this morning so this was excellent timing! Sounds like such a wild ride 😅
He actually does, I remember him making a video about switching that you might like. Heavy agree on storygraph being better. Im assuming hes using goodreads for this because that's what TBR requests/checks
you having a hard time pronouncing Tenochtitlan has prompted me to look up how to pronounce the names of the gods in 'the plumed serpant' which im reading now
Not the brittish mispronunciation of Spanish words 😂 live laugh love knowing everyone has a language gap no matter how much we read, saying it is so different! ❤
@@itseloise I read ~50% of the book, and skimmed until ~75% (it did not seem to get any better..). I support you DNFing it - no book is worth killing the joy of reading!
This made me realized Jack my not know "conquistador" or "Tenochtitlan" because he is neighbors with Mexico like we are. 0_0 I was like "Aint no way the well read, extremely smart individual doesnt know what word." Then I remembered the only reason we know it was from learning about Spain/Mexico/Us hsitory
I think you will thoroughly enjoy “You Dreamed of Empires” by Álvaro Enrigue. Mexican culture and history is something very under appreciated in the English literary world as well as culturally speaking. Its is full of very interesting characters, as you mentioned Moctezuma, but one character I feel you will thoroughly enjoy is Malinalli, commonly known as Malinche. She is a main character within the book, and is treated culturally as an essential figure of Mexican identity. She is treated as a traitor, having supposedly helped the Spanish to conquer her own people, stemming in the word “malinchista” meaning non-appreciative of culture and national traitor. But over the past few years, she has become a figure of resistance, and reconsideration of the past, and the values with which we judge historical facts. Thanks for your interest in Mexican literature!
Fun fact: you came to an indie bookstore in Boston called Posman Books and posted it on insta and I work at the one in Atlanta!! We talked about it for WEEKS because so many of us are obsessed with your videos!!!! If you’re ever in the area, you should stop by! Also we all laughed out loud at the “yassified communist manifesto” because that was definitely at Posman 😂😂😂
Jack not knowing how to pronounce “Conquistador” or “Tenochtitlan” really tripped me out! He’s British, of course he’s not familiar with the Aztec Empire.

came here to say the exact same thing haha
Me too! I said out loud “wait he doesn’t know what a conquistador is?!” And then I remembered he’s British lol
wait why would being british means he doesn’t know that like doesn’t everyone just learn about this stuff in world history
i mean, my country has virtually no connection to mayan/incan/aztec and latin american culture and yet i still know what they are?? in no way am i trying to be rude, but i feel like if you know at least a bit of world history, you'll know what a conquistador is
The New York Times has just concluded its list of the top 100 books of the 21st century. Would love to see a video where you read the top five or something like that!
Would love this!
Agreed
Or if he used a random number generator to pick 5 from the list of 100!
Loved Butter! It is so much more than the initial mystery plot as it is packed with rich character development and commentary on rigid societal expectations in Japan
Jack is like me with subscriptions: Just keep rolling with it
Ngl we’d like Jack to recommend our summer reads.

As a Latino, I would've loved hearing how you were going to pronounce Tenochtitlan. 😂
So glad to see "You Dreamed of Empires" on here-- one of my favorite books of the year so far, so unhinged and delightful. Thank you for another great video!
A vlog from Jack, YES PLEASE!
Books Mentioned:
You dreamed of empires by Alvaro Enrigue
Butter by Asako Yuzuki
Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
5:45 Pov: Me fighting my terrible reading slump

THE CAT 😂
A book expert- damn I’ve got to get me one of those 😆
Jack is my official TBR even though it’s not officially tailored but it does definitely feel that way :p

The history of Montezuma is very interesting. I want to call my future dog Montezuma but shorten it to Monty when he goes zoomies
I would love the LA vlog!! And have fun on the tour with Dustin =D
LMAO I thought you were saying "Conquest the door" and was so confused
Martyr! is an amazing book!! I devoured it so fast and I was able to meet the author right after I finished and he is an amazing person and writer.
I would love a vlog of your trip to LA!
nobody:
jack: i loveeee when a poet writes novels!
Martyr! is so outstanding, I think you're going to eat it up
Just finished Butter yesterday! It’s not so much of a mystery book so you might like it.
An L.A. vlog would be amazing! I'm also extremely excited for Martyr! 😄
I really want to read "Martyr!" but I'm not ready (as an Iranian, lol!) Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks for sharing these recs with us! Happy Summer Jack ☀

Oh yes please Jack vlog your trip to LA. It'll be like taking all of us with you 😜 Poor cat. Hope he was ok 🐾
I dare you to find out who that Susie person is and have her on your channel. I think she has an amazing job and it would be interesting to know the background of someone who recommends books to people who also recommend books.
Yes. Please do vlog the la trip :) Your travel vlogs are cool!
that cat bit had me DYING of laughter. Jack just saying "okay.." wild honestly
Hated „Butter“. I fought for my life reading through it cause I’ve a hard time DNFing (getting better at it). Can’t wait for your review.
okay but now i’m worried about that cat
it sounded like mating season, the cat should be ok :))
I also recommend Kaveh Akbar’s poetry collection, Calling a Wolf a Wolf ❤️
Martyr! has been one of my favorite reads this year
Have a greaaat summer Jack!!!❤
It’s pronounced “con-qee-stador” or “conqueror”
Also I signed up for my first TBR earlier this week awaiting my first list of suggestions!!
the way i left LA literally the day before the huntington beach event i will never get over this!!!
next time!!!
As a mexican I loved that you were very respectful and decided to google the words u didn't know.
If you have time while in L.A., visit the Academy Museum and dine in their restaurant, Fanny's. Both are great.
I'm also a negligent subscriber to TBR. I've enjoyed those books they recommended that I've read. Sometimes I don't quite agree with them but I'm always interested.
I just finished Martyr! Read it in one day. I couldn’t put it down. Keen to hear your take ☺️ would love your review on that and Butter 📚
i would LOVE some vlogs. i started watching you because of your reading vlogs
Yes please. Do vlog your la trip!
Martyr! is excellent. Enjoy!
I was so ready to hear Squarespace. Like wtf is “Listening” 😂
Please vlog your LA trip and welcome to Los Angeles. Hope you enjoy your trip here.
Was it just my experience in Pennsylvania schools or did anyone else have the word conquistador shoved down their throat
Lol. I'm from Texas and Conquistador was mentioned often for many many years for my school years days.
Same in Indiana! 😂
I can’t find a paperback of Butter ANYWHERE! 😢😢😢 I’m so desperate to read it since your video when you purchased it!
Go to Lost Books in Pasadena when you’re here if you have time!
Currently reading Butter now! Martyr is also on my list.
was I midway through binging jack edwards content and then this popped up? yes
I think youll really like Martyr. It was a very unique book! I literally just ordered You Dreamed of Empires this morning so this was excellent timing! Sounds like such a wild ride 😅
This is not a drill. you have to read Martyr! it is so so so good
You should start your own book box subscription company. Seriously!
Jack already throwing up gang signs, watch out in LA haha 🫶
2 minutes ago is crazy 😭😭😭
I'm Japanese living in Japan but I didn't know that Butter is that popular😂
I hope the cats are okay 😸
Please make new recommendation videos. I miss them
Yayyyy it’s here! Should be annual
"Martyr!" 😂
that poor cat 😢
A petition to get Jack start using Storygraph instead of Goodreads. Because it much better
He actually does, I remember him making a video about switching that you might like. Heavy agree on storygraph being better. Im assuming hes using goodreads for this because that's what TBR requests/checks
you having a hard time pronouncing Tenochtitlan has prompted me to look up how to pronounce the names of the gods in 'the plumed serpant' which im reading now
The way he pronounced conquistador reminds me of that rly old vine
Not the brittish mispronunciation of Spanish words 😂 live laugh love knowing everyone has a language gap no matter how much we read, saying it is so different! ❤
In the end I will have to get these recommendations for myself😂
con-key-sta-door jack
how?
you read way more than me
my bad, i was pronouncing phonetically the way we'd make the 'qui' sound in british english!
Please vlog your trip. Ever since your paris vlogs my eyes have been searching for something like that again. So please vlog your LA trip
always thought TBR stood for "to be read" 😭😭😭😭😭
It doesn't?
it does usually! i think this company are putting a spin on what TBR can stand for!
Cats woke my dogs up and caused a ruckus!
I did in fact dream of vampires
YES TO THE LA VLOGS
Butter was so dull it put me in a reading slump.. Spare yourself
I am audiobooking it and even then really struggling! Did you read it all? Wondering if I should DNF
@@itseloise I read ~50% of the book, and skimmed until ~75% (it did not seem to get any better..). I support you DNFing it - no book is worth killing the joy of reading!
‘Con-kees-ta-dor.’ The ‘u’ isn’t pronounced. Like ‘quiche’.
This made me realized Jack my not know "conquistador" or "Tenochtitlan" because he is neighbors with Mexico like we are. 0_0 I was like "Aint no way the well read, extremely smart individual doesnt know what word." Lmao Kon-Kee-Stah-Door
I wish you could see the alarmed look on my cat’s face when I got to 5:45 😂
Love ur videos so much ❤😊😊❤
What up TH-cam it’s your girl super women and today I’m in 1:14
Your pronunciation of conquistador is adorably wrong. For reference it's pronounced con-key-sta-dor
jack i love you so much and so dearly but your butchering of "conquistador" made me die a little inside 🫠 hugs and kisses xoxo
I can't wait to see you reviewing "Martyr" as this might be the first fiction written by an Iranian author you've mentioned on your channel so far :)
Ummmm was the cat ok? 😢
Random comment, but for those worrying about the cat: that is what a horny cat sounds like..😉🙃😂 so he/she was probably fine..😆
Baby girl, no LA fingers, please! 😬 😬😬
it's hernAAn. theres even an acent. didnt you stuy literature?
Fun fact: you came to an indie bookstore in Boston called Posman Books and posted it on insta and I work at the one in Atlanta!! We talked about it for WEEKS because so many of us are obsessed with your videos!!!! If you’re ever in the area, you should stop by!

so many are flaming jack in the comments for saying conquistador ‘wrong’ but it’s the exact same pronunciation i use.
it’s british english🫠
