- Hello,
I had the privilege of meeting and having a chat with Ben, who is the Engine Lead for the Himalayan 450 project. Ben and his team were responsible for developing this Sherpa 450 engine that powers the new Himalayan 450.
So, who better than to hear it direct from the man himself about this wonderful journey from the drawing board to Himalayan road. Technically inclined riders will enjoy this video.
Cheers!

Wow never expect RE would openly discuss such in-depth technicality to the public. Thanks for sharing, this will make the true enthusiast to appreciate their bike even further.
👍
Bcos it's no nuclear secret anymore.... lot of other competition in the market now
This is what I call a classy video. Brought back my engineering days memories. Bosky got none other than the Lead Engineer of the new 452cc engine. Anybody can talk about the bike's new looks and features. Bosky raised the bar and took the discussion to a much higher level. I love his technical bend of mind. Only a true rider/engineer would go to those details to know and love his machine. I say it again, this bike channel is world class level. I say this with full confidence with spending one-third my life in US working on cutting edge technology as an engineer. Hats off to Bosky Babu.
🙏🙏🙏
Couldn't agree more! None of the other biking media publications covered these interesting technical details! Thanks for this bigbearbangalore!
I really appreciate the efforts in making these videos. As someone who studied automobile engineering watching these videos makes me feel like I’m back in the classroom again!
👍👍👍
Same goes with me 😅
i dont understand your point, did you left the domain after studying auto engg?
Same pinch
Siddharth lal absolutely nailed the team that they've got for RE now. From the engineers to media, everyone's absolutely elevated the brand to a another level.
👍

@@bigbearbangaloreSir ,I recently took a Himalayan 411 cc .from the day 1 ride the engine of the bike gets heated up ,and gives a bad smell of heat flames . Does this has any solution??
The showrooms dealer said after 500kms driven ,and of 1st service it will sorted out...pls give me a correct note on it
@@Parveez-xg5di same problem faced with My KTM ... this May be due to Oil leak over engine or poor coolant supply....( Radiator fiction) for my bike they said it is due to Oil heated over engine ( though little bit but enough to produce smell and heat. Better wash your bike thoroughly and clean the engine with brush might help... otherwise wait for first service.
@@Parveez-xg5diThat is the new engine breaking in. Most RE's have that smell. It will go away after 200 to 300 km.
As an engineer myself and a bike ethusiast i find this video very helpful rather than jus reading the specsheet which most others do which we could easily find online. Also it was almost in layman terms so many could understand better. I look forward for much detailed videos in future too and thanks for putting the efforts and making such wonderful video
Glad it was helpful!
Using offset rear shocks and moving the battery and the air box seems to have created a narrower profile for the rider seat. The torque curve also seems really interesting. Would really love to ride this and see for myself. I would love to see a reduced NVH level for the engine.
👍
What an amazing interview, no interruption from the interviewer, I loved this, You sir have my utmost respect 😇🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏
Oh my god, this looks like the Goldilocks ADV that none of the other manufacturers would dare to make! Well done team and well presented, looking forward to a test ride soon
👍👍👍
Thanks to RE team for letting each and every TH-camr go through the presentation and explanation!
👍
A yes from me. Thanks 👍
A good example ,
Engineers should be given the lime light to show how much efforts they have put into the product they design.
Engineers like Ben will inspire the next generation of engineers.
Appreciate the content and welcome more of it.
Well said. Thanks.
Wow the engine technology like dlc coating , semi dry sump and forged pistons are crazy.
It feels like i am watch a video about some japanese or ktm engine.
Btw Great video sir.
My thoughts exactly
Very interesting. I ride a Royal Enfield 411 Himalayan from 2021 and I like it, but also Royal Enfield with its mix of British and Indian engineers and the improved production in India. Thanks for this video. Sven from Sweden
🙏
Bravo! deux interviews complets et bien détaillés et des questions intéressantes que tu as posées. Merci de France
Merci.
Love the ❤ two episodes on HIMALAYAN 450 & have no words other than "THANK YOU" from "BOTTOM OF MY HEART".
🙏🙏🙏
Of all the contents on Himalayan, the contents that u have been putting out is absolute gold 👍👍👍👍👍 can't wait for the big 'Hello' on 10th I guess ??!!?
🙏🙂
I am impressed with the new technology that is on the bike. It seems that the Himalayan has been completely updated from the ground up. I loved the fact that the lead engine engineer explained things. Very informative video.
Glad you liked it.
I thoroughly enjoy these kind of videos! Make one for the frame, suspension and electronics too!
Thanks. That was not possible, sorry.
Wow... I am sooooo glad you asked the right questions... something that most "reviewers" often forget... Idk.. I really wanted to know the svc intervals.. and most importantly the valve clearance checks... 10k seems like a reasonable number...
This is the kind of content I pay my internet bill for 😁🤙
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Big news on the valve check interval, it's now much closer to what you'd expect from a Japanese bike. I would perhaps have asked what efforts have been made with regards to ease of access to the air filter. In the 411 you just needed to pop off the side panel, with the 450 potentially having to remove the tank is a more significant undertaking, if Enfield has integrated some kind of "lifted tank" position that a lot of Hondas have for example that would be great.
Yes!
A very detailed explanation of the engine by the creator of the engine. I don't think anybody has done that. Excellent.👍his would make me buy this motorbike. Good for city as well as touring.
Happy to hear this. Thanks & cheers!
Thank you for such a detailed video.
Himalayan 411 was a market changer and now it looks like Himalayan 450 is also going to be another market changer.
👍
I like the way the designer of the engine is explaining on the different improvements. The alternator is spot on for ADV riding, when adding heated grips and clothing.
👍
As a mechanical engineer and keen home bike mechanic, I absolutely loved this video, especially as it was from the head of the design team.
🙏
This video is so awesome. So much knowledge i gather today and also glad to know that himalayan is improving day by day. Sir i respect you for your work and i wish that you will share this type of knowledge in future also. Lots of love from Kolkata.....❤❤❤
🙏
I've just ordered one. I'm finding the knowledge and passion for the brand inspiring. I look forward to seeing how good this is.
Hope you enjoy it!
Excellent explanation and informative question asked. Thanks once again for informative session with Ben. Personally thanks to Bosky and team.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to know about the Engine directly from the Lead.
Thank you Bosky for bringing this up for us.
As an enthusiast it is great to know about this engine which is now as per the industry standards. Few things I liked about the engine is:
1. It has good torque in even low range, so gear shift is not much or a concern as well as the engine stalling.
2. This is using direct action camshafts, so no frequent tappet adjustment, only once in 10K kms.
3. Cruising should be stressful now and overtaking in 5th gear should be more fun and confident.
🙏👍🙌
Engine design as a subject is an art!
👍
Sorry I am just digging into your videos on the Himalayan 450, but I must thank you for your deep dive into the technical details of RE's design decisions. With each video I watch in the series the more I am settled on this as my next middle-weight adventure tourer. I know I have more to watch but, so far, the folks at RE really seem to have thought this thing through enough for me to take the risk on a gen1 purchase.
🙏
Love listening to the design engineering behind this Sherpa engine. Thanks Ben for such a great presentation. I'm excited for this engine...would love to see it in a really good scrambler.
👍
Initially sceptical about the video length but totally loved the details provided in the video. Thanks for bringing such detailed video on the engine directly from the lead designer. ❤😊
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video, many thanks for putting out a very technical content. Not surprising that RE has brought down the oil grade from 15w50 to 10w40 owing to valve train changes. Hope the owners keep this in mind instead of going overboard 😊.
Thank you!
I’m not sure the grade has changed as much as the viscosity. Tighter clearances require a less viscous oil. Is RE recommending or requiring full synthetic?
@clintselby5035 semi-synthetic is what's suggested.
Wow. . . The deep technical conversation was superb♥️💥 Great job dear🥰😇 Loved it ♥️. Air filter change is going to be a task but then change interval is every 10k kms and very beneficial. Just want to experience that Intake sound as Ben mentioned multiple times. And having a dry sump has two oil pumps so will is increase the service cost by any means? And he mentioned 10W40 Semi-Synthetic oil to be used, so can we use fully synthetic? Lot of questions rising but what an engine build by RE. Great team effort and made in house with no JV with any international manufacturers like the competition♥️💥
Let's wait and get more details as time.passes.
True bro
Recently discovered your channel... Love the biking tips... Keep em coming
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for creating such an detailed content... All the technical details we want about this new RE engine..❤
My pleasure.
Thank you for the wonderful video. Though I'm riding RE since 1991 and at present I do have 2021 Himalayan and GS 310 2022 but I'm desperately waiting for this 452 and have already put my booking and now waiting for black and gold colour. Big thumbs up to the new RE team for this wonderful machine...
👍🙏
In contrast to other reviewers, we got to know more about the practical and technical aspect of the bike without even showing the bike (for the most part) in this video. Good Work ! 👍👍
Thank you.
One of the finest informative videos out there. I just love your work sir on instagram a lot. Short but perfectly informative things.
The best video for me was how to check if the rear ABS is working or not. Keep making good videos sir.
Glad it was helpful!
A great informative video. Thanks. Really looking forward to this bike, the unicorn for all road bikes.
👍
I really love my 2021 411LS, and was not interested in the 452. But after seeing that it has all the things I love about mine and fixed all the things that I hate. I can't wait to try one and I am thinking seriously of selling mine to a friend who has been wanting to buy it, and getting the new black and gold version. As an experienced rider, this new Himmy checks off all the boxes for me and it looks like Royal Enfield hit another home run on the new Himalayan. I can foresee Royal Enfield dominating the motorcycle market with beautiful, well priced and well engineered bikes. I just hope they try to make sure they only use quality parts, which has not always been the case in the past.
👍👍👍
Waiting for 450 scram and 450 retro with the lightest 160-170 kgs for short rider. Keeping RE one of my favourite two wheeler
👍
This shows what an experienced rider/technician's content would be, great work sir. Unlike newbies who doesn't even know what tyre pressure should be for their own bikes but will review and perform top speed runs abuse test bikes, sadly that group out runs the original content creators...
Love the efforts please enlighten us always 😊 ofcourse now we can buy re stocks too😅
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks again for bringing such an informative video sir.. it's amazing to see RE leaping to the serious performance engineering based products 🙌
🙏
really good info video without unnecessary flashy music and transitions etc
Glad you liked it!
Q#1.
If the walls of the engine are thinner and it's a stress member, how solid/soft would be the guard have to be to properly protect the engine, also the most important component the mounting points or engine bolts.
Q#2.
Access to the air box location under the tank, in relationship to on the road maintenance, also paper or foam filter, because here in Australia the dust can get very fine, especially when in a pack and at the back with no cross wind. T.I.A...
Apart from that it looks like the unicorn bike has been born...
I think the engine as stressed member will do fine. Thin walls in comparison to the old Himalayan but strong enough is what I've learnt.
Air filter yes, once in 10k, lift the tank and clean. Guess seat height and road clearance took priority, which is why the filter is where it is. And that's good.
Hi Boski , thanks for the ocean of information.
I think dry sump.also helps in too steep Inclines, declines and sudden braking, wherein normal wet sump bikes the oil level is affected at the suction point.
I do have doubts about the treated Aluminium bore 🤔. Even Aluminium pistons have steel reinforced grooves .Steel is stronger no doubt.
Thanks for the info.
i understand now why you didn't speak about the engine with Lorenzo in your previous video. It is a completely different engine from 411. the torque is amazingly improved. can't wait to test it.
👍
Sin duda estará entre los favoritos de los aventureros, felicitaciones!!!! Saludos desde Argentina
Thank you!
Really appreciate this clip thank you to you both. God Bless.
Glad you enjoyed it.
very interesting. sounds like a winner engine design
👍
Thank you for such an informative video. Though I would have liked more technical discussion regarding design choices. These bikes are competing in the international market but I believe the cost will take it out of the reach of the average and enthusiastic Indian buyers. I am sad that the old Himalayan is being discontinued. We have seen something similar with ktm.
Thanks for sharing. Let's wait for the price to be announced.
I click on every ad that shows up on videos you put out. Thanks much for your efforts. Especially these 2 videos on RE Himalayan
So nice of you. 🙂🙏
Fabulous video, such interesting angles and insight into the creative thought and action of Royal Enfield,I owned the original bike and loved it, a true original no other like it.
This new bike is very exciting and I'm so lucky to have ordered one.
Having the insight from this video only makes it more appealing.
Thankyou very much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Quality content sir. Your review is what i am looking forward too.
Much appreciated!
Great job does it have any anti vibration balancer mechanism? Great job folks I've ordered one to replace my BMW 1250 GSA
It's got a balancer shaft.
Just one word "EXCELLENT"
🙏👍
This bike is just crafted... meticulously crafted.. Brilliant classroom session..
👍
Awesome videos. Good enough for me to lodge my deposit on a 452 at my local dealer in Noosa Qld today! Delivery early next year I’m supposing.
Good luck!
As an Automotive Engineer I am impressed.... Royal Enfield has truly done a great job...... They have learnt from the past and they have also learnt from other manufacturer as well..... Like they have added a metallic turbine on the coolant pump that means sealed bearings which are more durable than seals.... So no coolant mixing with oil issue.... This engine will be slightly more durable
👍
Great video. I wish you had asked about the power cut-off/engine power loss at around 4k RPM. Has the issue been identified and resolved? Otherwise a beautiful bike and engine. To understand the issue I am talking about watch a TH-cam video with this title, where the rider experiences the issue too many times while riding somewhere around Himalayas region: "The 2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan has a major issue..."
Thanks.
What power loss? I haven't heard of that issue.
It really sounds like a DRZ400. Though your bike is 6 spd which raises the bar. Also meets Euro standards!
It does!
Thanks Bosky for this video❤ Brilliant idea to keep the intake far up, help in water wading. As you asked Ben if there are any changes in existing service and maintenance, please clarify if we can install performance air intake.
Thanks.
Is that a yes! We can install performance air filters? If yes, is there any specifications?
It will be really great if you could talk about rally kit, which has arrow* exhaust system. Is there any different setup made for rally edition since the have for a shorter exhaust to balance the weight.
Don't know. Too early to say anything. It's only after launch will the after-market brands can take measurements and check airflow and then make an air-filter.
Thank you again Bosky🎉 You the best❤
Thank you for this lovely video. Loved every technical bit of it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video , congrats to you and RE. 2 questions I would have, won’t an aluminium bore be subject to high rates of wear.? 2/ won’t the integrated engine as part of the frame lead to increased vibration.?
Thanks.
This design is on most brands already and no such issues.
Stressed member engines don't necessarily cause any extra vibes. Thanks.
I put 120,000 kms on my 2014 Indian Vintage, sold it, moved to Argentina and bought a new 2022 Himalayan. Smiles per mile were about the same on each bike. My only complaint was the highway speeds. It sounds like this bike rectified that situation and I am now totally excited for the 452 to come to Argentina! It could well be the last bike I ever need through my retirement years.
cheers! Happy riding.
Wonderful, Just wanted to know more about the Water / liquid cooling system, how is the circuit ( similar to duke/ dominor ish ) , or this is something different in running the coolant pump... rest are nicely covered in this interview. Big Thumbsup 👍
🙏👍
Great video. Thanks 🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it
Proper explorer bike . Great review.
Glad you liked it
Watching it again
👍👍👍
Great , i like how they brought improvements. Glad i was able to work with supplier company for RE when the speedometers developed for meteor and classic. Regarding this , each time of service , tank has to be removed like every other bike now. Hope service guys dont mess up this.
👍🙏
🙏👍
The way you say "Hello" is so nice 🙂😊
Long live ❤
Thank you! 😃
I plan to buy Himalayan, till when we can expect engine noise reduction, loved the bike in test ride, kudos
🙏
Very interesting. Thank you! :-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was needed thanks for efforts 🎉
No problem 👍
Your channel is totally underrated. Love from Kerala❤❤❤
Thank you so much .
Very insightful and informative. Those questions I had have all been answered.
Thank you for this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for a very informative video. Just wondering if the valve adjustment is shim and bucket or adjustable rocker arms? This new Himalayan looks like it just might be my next bike.
Thanks.
Shim system.
@@bigbearbangalore I am drooling over the new Himalayan and already called a dealer but they told me we will probably not see them in Canada for at least another year. As a mechanic by trade I can't help wonder about a few things. 1. I know this is a new bike but are consumeables like filters, chain, sprockets etc.common to other bikes? 2. What about the fuel injection? Can you retrieve trouble codes and other live data through the screen like on my Yamaha FZ6 and other Japanese bikes? Is there even a scan tool available for use on Royal Enfields if the information is not available through the screen? There are not many dealers in Canada and the nearest to me is 300 km away also I travel to some pretty remote areas up north so if I can not fix it myself that may be the deal breaker :-(. I think the new Himalayan could do for Royal Enfield what the Cub did for Honda but it must be easy to service anywhere.
I dont think it shares any parts with other models. Special tools should become available after launch. Emission norms and marker demands have made motorcycles a bit more complicated thsn some decades ago.
Thanks for realy cool gear box, i checked that is no have quick shifter even i know it before.
🙏
Great job! so many adv bikes develop torque were you don't really need it for real world off road riding, or put down so much so quickly, they have to rein it back with software intervention, which can give the rider an unconnected, slightly artificial feeling. Shifting the fuel weight lower and further towards the middle of the bike suggests another plus, for picking the bike up from a drop. Hope it's got a nice heavy flywheel for crawling speeds. Best of Luck and I hope the new Himalayan proves to be a great success for Royal Enfield. Given that the new bike may well be up against the likes of Honda's CB 500 X in the UK, I think a mild power bump to 47 HP (A2 licence-friendly) would be achievable with the liquid cooled ali cylinders and forged pistons...maybe a touch longer stroke?
👍👍👍
just decat+remap this engine, and you'll have 47 HP easily :)
Wow such a lovely video and informative ! Sir you videos are making me fall in love again !
Thank you so much 😀
Right on. I'm excited about this bike
👍
Another superb compilation! You thought the questions well...
Thanks a lot!
I like way country is evolving in automobile industry making mark in world 😊
👍
Awesome..straight from the head..simple and to the point..so much thanks..rgds
Glad it was helpful!.
Great product! Can't wait to see it in Indonesia
👍
With the ride by wire, will cruise control be available. With the highway capabilities cruise would be very nice.
No cruise control.
Appreciate it. Learnt much of this beautiful engine.
Great to hear!
Absolute gold information, thanks for this.
Subbed to your channel.
Thanks for the sub!
Sir, thank you for demonstarting the art of listening🙏
🙂🙏
Great insight, fuel economy is a bit lower than I expected, it better be worth it.
👍
Amazing work. However, fuel efficiency for 450 engine is 28km/l is low. Bonaville T120 (1200cc) gives 23km/l.
Yes and its not a cc to cc comparison always.
good product .
We agree!
Looks to be a solid engine, hopefully it will be very reliable and long lasting. I would have liked it better with a normal throttle cable and no ride by wire and I still don't trust coated engine parts though.
Ok
I would really appreciate if you can ask the RE people, how are they going to manage the service of the new Himalayan. From 2017- 2023 is 6years in development of the new engine, but if they don't know how to service this bike to the correct point then it will be the customers who will suffer.
RE has ticked all the boxes except the service center which is horrible to the point where at least 8 out of 10 customers suffer. I think they should revisit their service team and make sure they give the customer what they need.
I know it is tough to handle service with such a huge network but why don't they differentiate with some specially trained technicians in at least one of their service centers in each city which will make a huge difference.
hope you see this comment and reply ?
Oook. Sorry to hear.
And it's better that you ask? I say this because you seem to have had bad experiences so you have the basis and the right to raise this question. I haven't had any great issues with my ownership bar a few minor ones that were attended to. Regards.
@@bigbearbangalore thanks for your reply, yes even u don't have major issues with my bikes, might be we both are at the 2 people out of 10.
Being yourself owning a garage you might have heard from the customers of RE who have complained on the service issues.
The point I am trying to make is even those minor issues that we get are not able to rectify from the RE service engineers.
Even I am small youtubers and who owns the RE CLASSIC REBORN AND most of my subscribers still complain on their service.
If they take 6years to develop a engine but to my knowledge they just educate or give training to theor engineers hardly weeks or months.
Since most of the TH-camrs are afraid to ask such hard questions to RE or any brand and seeing your video you are not one of them.
I would appreciate if you can ask them how are they going to manage.
Just ask them how long have they provided training to their engineers on this new himalayan and in what scenarios.
You might be surprised with their answers.
Thanks again for your reply.
@PratipVlogs your point well understood. Regards.
I’m curious what is involved in valve lash adjustment? Is this a user friendly process, like with most dirt bikes?
We'll find out soon.
Excellent 😊 I wonder what its going to cost for all these marvellous improvements 😊 As a high mileage rider it has always been the service intervals that has made me hesitate at buying another RE but with those projected intervals, this could easily be my next RE 😊 Thanks Big bear😊
👍
Can i just ask why the exhaust is so low? Judt is thinking of creek crossings and if you drop a bike in the creek. How easy is ut to get the water out? Spark plu accessible? And have to remove fuel tanknto change the wet filter?
Exhaust is ok and even if dunked in water, chances of water thru exhaustvare super minimal. It's the intake that can suck water in.
Plus needs change once in 20k perhaps, so when replacing air-filter change plug I guess.
Well, if it's dunked so badly to allow water into the filter, it's likely to be a bad dunk, so tank removal, yes!
Awesome work! How about a bike to go with the engine? 280 to 300mm suspension travel, high exhaust, 300mm ground clearance, 140kg! Make it the bike the DRZ400/ XR400 should have been.
Sounds great!
Sir your viedos has knowledge sharing about the bikes is very imp for bikers ...thanks sir
🙏
Really enjoyed both videos . Can't wait for your review, first time I feel irritated about 'embargo' as i am really excited about a motorcycle launch after a long time, this will be my next bike ❤
Hope you enjoy it!
18:17 use the HORN a lot, loved the response😅😂
😀
