I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I was at that vein shortly after it was discovered and it is very poor quality as you can tell on how easy it broke apart. I have a 70 lb piece of picture Jasper from Biggs that was mine in the 1970s it is very solid there's no cracks in it it holds up to weather very well. The second bad news there have been people that have received tickets for doing what you guys were doing. As with every Rock Hounding book that's out there that talks about that being a place to dig or collect rocks there, none ever discuss the things you should not be done at that site. Going up on the cliff even two or three feet is enough to receive a ticket from the Oregon State Police, but the county sheriff's office doe not csrèrtrrrftrj. The reason for this is rock hounding activity causes destabilization in the cliff. Now the cliff has been pushed back by 20+/- feet reducing the likelihood of material falling on the roadway. There is typically plenty of material that has been free falling due to weather down at the base or down the road a little bit where it's been moved by the department of transportation and dumped. This material is very unstable and slabs can break apart over time. A cactus juice under vacuum stabilization procedure may be required. The best material currently available in the area is up at the China Hollow Mine. Very dark, the patterns are tight and well defined, and very stable as well as quite hard. Your summary of how it was formed was spot on. Some call it Mud Jasper, and I like how you alluded to the mud flows of prehistoric times which aided in the pattern development. I do see you have a handful of good pieces, some may take an average or slightly less than average polish. But Biggs Area Jasper does look very good having a semi-gloss finish, reduces the glare and allows the patterns to be seen. Hope you get some usable material out of that.
I have seen the stuff from the China Hollow mine - it is lovely. And yes, a lot of the stuff we got was not usable as lapidarists- but it sure is PURDY! :D
The old-timers had a thing called a stone boat (pulled by horses). It was kind of a big, close-to-the ground sled. You can use a child's plastic toboggan or shield shaped sled to move big stuff like tree trunks and really big rocks. If your ground is rough, sliding a big piece of cardboard underneath the front edge of the sled to make a more slippery surface to get started with the pull. It will save your back. Make the rope to pull the sled longer, and you can put it across your hips to use mainly your legs to pull and so save your shoulder. I've used kid's sleds to move all kinds of stuff like mulch, compost, and soil and rocks twice the size of your jasper. Love the info you shared--great vid. Thanks.

But there are chunks that have the cryptocrystalline texture and conchoidal fractures that can be called jasper. Or are you suggesting Biggs jasper in general can't be called that?
Lol you could have asked some people from a local cross fit gym to haul that boulder across your yard lol. I always call that crumbly stuff “not quite jasper”. Since the creation of jasper is a process I’m guessing it’s like you said “uncooked”. Beautiful stuff even if all of it wasn’t salvageable. The crumbly stuff can probably just go into the garden.

Put a couple ounces of "bardahl no smoke" for cars to your saw oil and you will never have that mist again. That mist is bad for the lungs and gets all over things around the saw. Rock on!

Hi Katy, just to say the last teardrop shaped rock looks to be a "Whistle rock" . When I was a chap walking down the gravel roads, the same hole in rocks like this would make a high pitched whistle when I could lay the flat area close to my mouth and I blew air real fast over the hole. Some time a similar whistle sound could be made from a spent pistol cartridge while holding it to your lower lip. Anyhow, the kids thought it was neat.

Well done! Too bad there was so much Punky material in that jasper rock. but now you know why it was claimed and mined because there was too much punky material in there to make it worth while, low quality picture jasper, but there is still some very beautiful pieces in that rock!
I find similar jasper here in good old Indiana as well. We have the yellow & brown stuff you are showing as well as gray, blue, black, and some reds (rare). It all probably came from Canada on the glaciers, but it is common here.
I started laughing when I saw the promo shot of you cradling that gigantic rock! I ran to show my husband and said, “who does this remind you of?”. He just rolled his eyes and shook his head! 😂
What do you do about all those fracture lines going through the slabs? Won’t these fall apart at some point? Do you pretty much have to cut them into smaller pieces?

Wow that was a huge rock! 97 lbs! And its just as well that it had fractures due to the freeze and thaws, or it wouldnt have done you any good. But the pieces that came out were awesome! I have a project i found on quest for details channel, that i need picture stone for. And a couple slabs of it. Awesome video! The beginning was priceless!

Hi from Pensacola Florida! Love your channel. I'm 58 y/o audio engineer & photographer who has always had a fascination w/ rocks since I can recall. While my 2nd grade class was reading about Johnny & Jane playing, I was selecting technical literature on rocks. My dad gave me a rock tumbler when I was 10y/o for Christmas, & I was amazed at the changes in texture w/ different grit. Had a blast selecting rocks from Illinois, Montana, Minnesota, Louisiana, & Florida in addition to those in the tumbler kit. To this day, I still collect rocks on my journey to & from bus stops. Thanks for the well produced vids! Love the kitties & pup for me. God bless.

Have you considered using epoxy to coat some pieces to keep them from cracking and to give them more shine? Your asymmetrical pendant seems like a good candidate for that.

I don't think the soft stuff was because of damage - I think it's just how it was formed.

Yep! Sometimes they are "healed" fractures, but mostly it means smaller pieces.

It looks like it had a good bleaching.
It stayed out all winter, so the water got into the cracks and froze.
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Great video! Isn't picture jasper fun!!! It's like Rorschach ink blots tests for us "rock heads"!
