Many years ago, at least 50, I got enamoured with pictire jaspers, oftentimes Bruneau , which produced some awesome 'pictures': mountains, desserts, occasionally dendrites which reminded me of sagebrush, Biggs, I cut/polished cabs, some of which were freeformed. I always ground-polished the back sides of each cab I did. It's so many years ago, I don't remember other names /kinds of jasper that I used to cut. How many kinds of jasper are there? Thanks for sharing your collection.

You know that he's so happy to have you come over so he can talk rocks with you. Talking shop so to speak. But you know you have found a kindred soul when you can look at a rock and just melt, and see the stunning beauty in a tiny piece of region where the geological formation and activity produced the picture Jasper that you look at and can't stop looking at! I have found an Kindred soul is you, and you have found a kindred soul in Don Hilderbrand. I used to and still do walk around with my face towards the ground, and one of my favorite places to look is a gravel road that is really old. the gravel that some places used to get was often taken from places where the granite formations were more than just granite, I have even found pieces of rock wit almost a complete opal in it, albeit a very small one. and more than a few have had remnants of fossils in them as well. I was lucky to find a rather large piece of rock that was basically one large deposit of Shell fossils, it's about 10 inches by 9 or so inches and is thickest in the middle about 4 inches thick. I actually intend on getting an air scriber and actually remove the matrix rock around them so the shells can stand out a bit from the rest of the rock It literally is a collection of shells all held together by a little bit of rock, it is so full of seashells, and this rock came out of the Rocky Mountains South and East of Banff, Alberta, Canada. From the Elbow River valley upstream into the Kananaskis Provincial Park. Such beautiful country in there and you'd think it would be the last place you'd find seashell fossils, being at around 3700 ft. above sea level perhaps a bit more depending on how high up the mountain the rock came from, it could even be as high as 12,000 ft., when you are standing next to the Elbow River, you are literally standing at the base of a mountain that rises above you to about 11,500 ft. or more. Rising upward from the riverside straight up at about a 75 or 80 degree angle, it really is awe inspiring and makes you feel a little bit small in comparison. And there's camp site right close to the River there so you can set up a small RV or tent and sleep at the base of a phenomenally huge hunk of rock! Thanks for sharing this visit with us. looks like you came away with some stunning pieces of rock for yourself, so awesome for you, and jealous for me! LOL You'll have to post some of the things you make from those rocks!

Hi Kate. Thanks for taking us along out to Oregon and introducing us to Don and the Biggs jasper. We’re taking a hiatus from Billings in a couple weeks and heading to Quartzsite. Will definitely have to check out Don’s booth.

What a nice gentleman. There is nothing better than interviews with the mine owners. I love all of the fabulous information they have to offer. Outstanding interview and showcase.
The comment, in his shop about the shelf rocks being duds……😳🤤
There is no way anything from the Biggs mine could be a dud. It’s gorgeous and I am drooling.
Thanks for sharing this awesome episode.

From what we see through the way you dress, it's freezing cold as the expression goes. It's still hot here. Yesterday I saw people at the beach like in July or almost!
Personally, I collected during my walks a large batch of semi-precious stones including, agate, chalcedony and others; some specimens are very beautiful, despite being in their raw natural state
. Happy New Year's to all.

It was QUITE cold during our visit to Don's shop - although not as cold as it was in my home, Montana. Happy New Year to you!

Hi. Was at Biggs today June 2nd 2023. There is a huge beautiful piece thats fallen to the roadside. Please let him know so he can go get it before its gone. Ots probably 200-300 lbs. I would hate to see it sledgehammer it'd be awesome if he can slab the whole thing.

If you are interested in flint, visit the Alibates flint quaries in TX. It is beautiful and of excellent quality. It was used by Native Americans and was traded far and wide.

    * The rock that he polished at the 18:26 mark could be glued with a very thin (runny) glue to keep it together.. "Mamalambo" glues his fossils with it. Then you don't lose your stone or fossil..

You're not wrong - there were a lot of filming issues at the beginning, as we were in a dark shop and Don kept shining his phone light on the rocks. It does get getter about halfway through - sorry for the dizzying camera work at the beginning!
