This was recorded in 1980 in Washington, DC at Lisner Auditorium...the musicians are Charlie Waller - guitar and lead vocal, Kent Dowell - banjo and tenor vocal, Rick Allred - mandolin and baritone vocal, and Bill Yates on bass and bass vocal...the reason I know this is because I was on that "live" recording...just making the facts straight....Kent D.
I beg to differ. When I was 7 and it was Thanksgiving, us kids got put to bed. I snuck down and hid behind the couch and saw my grandpa and uncles playing music and smiling. They kept drinking water out of brown bottles for some reason. Bob was playing banjo and Steve was playing harmonica and Ron was playing guitar and papaw was playing guitar and singing. I fell in love with this song. As I grew up I saw it performed many more times. I really miss my papaw. In my heart, they are the ones that sang it.
This song was written by Tony Hazzard an English singer-songwriter who wrote songs for the Hollies, The Yardbirds, Herman Hermits, Gene Pitney. Andy Williams Peter Noon and many more Think he still lives in Cornwall England.
She walks through the corn leading down to the river. Her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun. She took all the love that a poor boy could give her and left me to die like a fox on the run. Such fine imagery.
I'm the same age and I sure didn't need to stumble on these boys. i just happened to be blessed to be born and raised in the mountains of God's blessed Kentucky, listening to this beautiful sound. I don't believe it makes me entitled. She's probably some yankee who thinks liking obscure music makes her better than them other mainstream folk.
My dad tried to learn banjo. Mother, didn't like it. He was a good player with other instruments. I loved his talent. I don't remember the whole story. ❤ I wish things would have been different.
I actually LOVE this version of this tune but when I loaded the video, it cuts out at about 30 sec in. I tried multiple times via different paths. No good.
I saw these guys in IN some years ago. What a treat. Thank you very very much for sharing this particular recording of this song. What is the album and who are the artists?
I wouldn't call it racist. I call it an eye for an eye. Turn-about is fair play. If he's gotta listen to Polk music played at 200db in -his- yard, why -shouldn't- they be subjected to bluegrass from with in -his- domain?

I can listen to this song a million times and it only gets better.

The Gentlemen bring this song to life. Other groups try, but they don't get there.

The Country Gentlemen started years ago Brian. The band you see nowadays are actually the grandsons carrying on the name of the original band.
love this one

Such fine imagery.
Charlie Waller. One of the great voices in bluegrass.
He was my Mama's favorite singer.

This is so sweet.
Reminded e of Winfield Pecan Grove!!
That is Charlie Waller singing lead, not Randy. This was recorded in the 80's with Kent Dowell, Rick Allred and Bill Yates in the group.
This song is from "Live in Japan" 1971.
Charlie Waller,Bill Emerson,Doyle Lawson,Bill Yetes.

My dad tried to learn banjo. Mother, didn't like it. He was a good player with other instruments. I loved his talent. I don't remember the whole story. ❤ I wish things would have been different.

I saw these guys in IN some years ago. What a treat. Thank you very very much for sharing this particular recording of this song. What is the album and who are the artists?
This isn't either Doc Watson, nor Bill Monroe nor his band..
Is there a studio version of this song?
this song was composed by English songwriter Tony Hazzard written for Manfred Mann. He wrote in in the late 60's. was originally not a bluegrass song.
You mean Bill Monroe and Doc Watson?????.........spelling is everything in music!!!!!!
its Doc Watson
So why are you showing a picture of Bill Monroe and Doc Warson??
WISH IT ACTUALLY PLAYED THROUGH
Does being a 19 year old girl give you some kind of leeway on liking certain songs?
....this version seems to be too fast,...i.e., -more tempo than the original recording !

Rather hear "Fox on the Run" by Sweet.
Tom T Hall wrote it
What in the fuck am I listening to?
It's Bluegrass Ian. A style of music. Or was your question rhetorical?
Bluegrass. It preceded crappy music.
Erik Tibbits amen. lol
Erik Tibbits LMAO!
George Jackman shut your nasty mouth and just listen and you will hear what it is
