Darrell Braun Guitar this was my guitar I took the frets off get back to me please and I'll tell you all that I did on it I don't know how it ended up at you but I sold it to a guy for 50 bucks
Hey I just want to say this makeover was amazing, I'm a big fan of fretless guitars, I only as of one thing... jam some more with this guitar with that amazing beat omg
Do you got a vendetta? That thing I've heard is horrible. You still haven't hit rock bottom until you get a plywood body guitar, I've had two a Kramer and a Bullet strat (early 2004 model). The bullet I just got and pulled it apart and built a body for it. It is much better to have a wood body, the back is hard maple with an ash front with the same slim profile so it weighs close to a real strat but is a thinner hard tail (it also got USA fender single coil pickups from my strat I upgraded to noiseless vintage pickups (60Hz hum still don't sound musical to me).
Midnight Gaming I see you watch king of the hill so let me make a situation to describe the indescribable. My reaction was just about like if somebody told hank hill that they don't sell propane anymore because now they have all battery powered grills.
I guess when it happens early you don't have that period where you're overly tender in how you handle a new instrument lol, that's how I am anyway. It's almost a relief when you get that first ding. I will never understand forcing the look instead of just letting it happen naturally though. I guess I prefer it for what the look implies rather than how it actually looks
Guitar is like 'hey, I've been adopted into a new home with other guitars where I'll finally get the love and attention I deserve... wait... what are you doing with those scary tools?'. My heart may take a week to back down from my throat, but the end result was quite good. I wonder how many times you said 'oops' yourself, though.
Yeah. I winced too when the relicing happened. But why not? It was a cheap garage sale find! The fretboard came out really nice looking. - I am sure we will find out in another video how well the radius removal worked. And thank god you played it for a minute. My head was going to explode if we had to wait another week to see how it actually sounded.
I just noticed when he put the radius gauge on the very ends were not touching the fretboard. That was a 12" radius gauge I thought he said? Look like it got sanded a tad flatter than that. Just an observation.
@Lord Jock agreed. A hammer is much too distinct of a mark - holes like that scream fake. The wrench was a better idea, smaller holes that don't look like they were distinctly from one thing
Watching the relic procedure was gut "wrenching". You must have been "hammered" to do this. You have revealed all of Fender's relic secrets and just saved me a great deal of money. Just a tip, next guitar use a belt sander & grinder with a wire brush wheel, saves time.
For such a better relic, take the body w the pickguard but without all the electronics And just have fun throwing it to cobblestone Then sand down/distress ONLY the edges that your arm touches This way the relic will look much more realistic
I was surprised that there was any Rosewood left after all that sanding, then the way you beat on that body like it was a Red-Headed Step-child made me squeal like a little girl. In the mean time my American Strat was trying to look over my shoulder to see what all my gasping was about & it almost passed out til it heard the awesome sound it made.... then it needed a smoke... LOL
laughed out loud when you brought out the hammer. the tools were getting more and more intense I was expecting a chainsaw next and then maybe a handgun!
He probably doesn't like someone playing a guitar that is worn intentionally when he worked hard to develop a skill to match the wear of his own guitar. Personally I can respect that and although I don't mind it I still think people should have to be able to play in order to buy one. A guitar with road wear on it is a badge of honor among guitar players, when you see it you expect to hear some awesome playing and not someone in their first year of learning fumble around on it. You pop up with something that looks like Yngwie Malmsteen's first guitar he still owns then you better be able to play like he does, otherwise it makes you look like a jackass.
I respect ONLY honest playing wear. Reliced instruments are for posers. Go learn to play your guitar and wear through the pick guard from practice like all the peeps who made worn out instruments "cool".
Back in 1973, I bought a 1960 Fender Precision for $165 with my first pay cheque. It looked like this relic - all banged up. It looked like it had gone through the "smash it up on stage" phase. The first thing I did was strip the bass down and refinish it. Unfortunately, I sold it 10 years later to stay in school for $350.
Remember people Darrell asked what we wanted to see and there was a majority who wanted to see him do this! I think he deserves all the success he has, as he puts in allot of time in, his video's and variety of content, are always put together and edited well. Thanks.
Don’t like relics at all ... unless they were worn by playing that way; but hey look what they’ve done to blue jeans?! Darrell obviously had fun with this one though.
If you missed part 1 check it out here: th-cam.com/video/GJBWLJh70Ac/w-d-xo.html You guys asked for it, so here are the top requested mods - including the relicing! enjoy :)
At least you gave a warning before the "Relic job." As for my reaction, all I can do is to quote Meg Ryan in Joe VS The Volcano... "I have no response to that."
Your videos are in a league of their own for entertainment. I'm inspired to do some kind of project myself now. Thanks for showing the process and hope it turned out the way you wanted it to!
It actually smells like roses. Seriously. . that's why its called "rosewood". Also, if you inhale any you'll be coughing for weeks (don't ask me how I know).
I sat and stared at my Strat copy for an hour, after puttin on a beautiful paintjob and clearcoat, to get the courage to start relicing! I finally said "oh well", threw my keys in the air and let em fall on that beautiful finish. There was no turning back! Glad I did...it turned out great! I love it! Never have to worry about scratches or dings. It just adds more character! Yours turned out great too! Looks awesome!
Yeah. I could never intentionally hit a guitar with those tools. I don't care how cheap the guitar is. I did lightly "relic" an Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro though. It is a factory second that looked like it was laminated in plastic, so I used different grades of micro mesh cloth to give the finish a satin look. Then I did the same to the pickguard, headstock, trussrod cover, and poker chip. I then used some very light yellowish-brown stain on certain parts of the pickguard and binding, to make it look slightly dirty or old. I didn't put any gouges or scratches on the guitar though. I put nickel hardware on it. All stock electronics though. I just love the guitar now. Did I mention I hate reliced guitars?
I hope that this wasn't a Customers Guitar brought in for you just to fix a Crackly Selector Switch? If so, you need to convince them that it needed a complete restoration! LOL!

I use to work at a cabinet company. We use to "distress" some of the cabinets. You should've seen some of the torture devices we used to make new cabinets look old. lol
hey dude, great video as usual! that part with the ebony stain was SO satisfying to watch, i can only imagine the satisfaction of actually doing it in front of you!

I have a few spare strat bodies and necks laying around; I think you convinced me to try this with a Warmoth Baritone conversion neck.
I was skeptical about the relic at first. When I saw you relicing, at first I though: "Oh come on, really, is he gonna hit it with a hammer!?" But, I'll admit, when you showed the final product, it looked really beautiful in the end, the clean white pickguard against the red body.. As some other commenter here said: "And there you have a $3000 custom shop" (if only you edited out the squire logo, it would totally pass).
Not a big fan of the beat up relics. But i never really understood the appeal of that look at all, or why it's only fender guitars that have it, while everyone wants a shiny gibson. Other than that it looks pretty cool, and challenging to play
A flatter radius should be better for playing single notes, a rounder one makes chords more comfortable. 12" should improve the playability as a fretles though.
Michael Guenther but that’s why we have adjustable saddles...to match the existing radius of the neck... seems a waste of time and elbow grease if you ask me. Violins, Violas, Cellos, etc have extremely radiused necks/fingerboards...the bridges are shaped to match.
Hi! This was a cheap beat-down garage sale guitar that I picked up for practically nothing (I explained that in last week's video). So in effect, it is a platform that I can try out various mods on without damaging any instrument I care about ☺
Nice! Never liked relic guitars, not even when it was my job to relic 'em... you've pulled some nice tricks with the fretboard! Glad you sanded it till putty filled rosewood chips were a whole lotta better... Thanks for tesing the ebony stain for all of us! Luv yer work! Keep on!
Luthier tip: take the rosewood dust from the fretboard sanding and pack it into the fret slots. Then, let some water-thin superglue rush into the slots and harden. Sand the slots down until they are smooth again and you have a near seamless fingerboard. You want to fill the slots otherwise the strings could cause a bad bow in the neck that can vary with the weather.
I like the sound - remeniscent of a Pat Metheny effect. Not crazy about the relic job, though - just not my thing. Ebony stain turned out well. I really like that part.
You could string it up a lot heavier than 11-52 if you wanted. It's not like you have to use normal bending techniques! Also, an orbital sander would have made the work go a lot faster, both on the neck and on the relic job. I did a bit of relicing on my own guitar, but I did it _before_ I applied the poly finish. It looks worn, but is no more vulnerable to damage than it would have been without the worn look. I accept that you probably don't care, but for someone who regards the instrument as more than a novelty, it might be worth considering at least. I don't want paint chips coming off while I'm playing it, even though it might make for good showmanship.
I had to partially skip the relic part!! It was too hard for me to watch! Hahaha It ended up looking superb!!! Very nice work and excellent video... love your channel! 😁
Darrel that was hard to watch my man.i cringed Every time you smacked that guitar with that hammer lol.really cool vid.i don't think I got the nads to do that.
The relic process is a bit hard to watch. I could not do it on a nice guitar!!! You have my respect for doing that!!! Even if the guitar didn't cost a lot!!!
Thanks. I always learn a lot from your videos. Today I learned how to turn a fretboard into a veneer. I also learned how to make a guitar look like it was lent out to my 9 year old nephew for a week or two. LOL Why is 'relicing a guitar cool, but relicing your convertible is not cool?
Its quite hard watching people purposely inflict damage on guitars, I’m lucky I have had my Squire for 18 years so it has naturally occurring dings scratch’s etc 😊
Te karu Hayes haha! Mine has a little wood chip missing, i was cleaning my room and it felt from.my chair, i tried to fix it with a marker and now i regret it
The Raul Guerrero G yeah, my dad said i should restore it but I like all the dings an scratches they have memories from my first gigs an band practice in garages
Just picked up a new pickup for my strat. I got a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail for the bridge. When I install it I’m going to add some switching to it, such as a coil split switch (not going for a stock look, so no push/pull pots here) and a David Gilmore style mod (add the neck pickup to switch positions that normally wouldn’t have it). And I’m gonna wire up a tone pot to be for the bridge pickup. While I’m working on it, I’m going to level the frets and file down the fret ends, as my guitar seems it wants to murder me.
I have a Frankenstrat!, If you want to see it this is the link! instagram.com/p/BfWDr4UgRLr/ I didnt do that Job, but I know the boy who did this awesome work, and sounds pretty good!
WOW! That was tough to watch, and I was super unsure about how it could possibly turn out well, but that baby looks and sounds great! I'm surprised how much I liked that relic job, but it looks awesome. Maybe I'll have to try this sometime!
Well... it looks good! I didn't care for the scratches and gouges so much, though. Unfortunately, it didn't sound as good as I was hoping. Maybe she needs some fine tuning somewhere? Regardless, that was one extremely entertaining video to watch!
Watch here th-cam.com/video/bZgr7-Wk58Y/w-d-xo.html if you want to skip the relicing and just want to see the final results!
Do you know the name of the first song in this video? love it
Darrell Braun Guitar did you seal the stain so that it doesn’t get absorbed by the fingers while playing?
Darrell Braun Guitar this was my guitar I took the frets off get back to me please and I'll tell you all that I did on it I don't know how it ended up at you but I sold it to a guy for 50 bucks
Darrell Braun Guitar you should ad some yellowing to the pickguard. it gives it a more worn out look
Hey I just want to say this makeover was amazing, I'm a big fan of fretless guitars, I only as of one thing... jam some more with this guitar with that amazing beat omg
Just watched this in front of my wall of guitars.
"Let this be a warning to you all! Stay the hell in tune!"
😄 YES!!!
agree >:D
This comment is so inderrated
My one guitar has been in tune for 2 weeks nowI just checked it with my tuner lol.
Watching this after they delivered my guitar with cosmetic damage
"Look away if you have a weak stomach"
Innocent me: oh did he cut himself? That's fine I gue...
OH HELL NO!
I would have done a re-fret after fixing the fingerboard. Easy, cheap.
every day hundreds of old fenders are abused. for only 9 dollars a month you can help stop this fender cruelty. #savethefenders
Camera slowly pans across Pete Townshend's guitars...
in the arms of a fender
I saw perfectly good 50's original strats carved to fit a Floyd Rose because someone in the 80s thought this was a good idea
I should have looked away. This made me want to go hug my Strat and never let it go
Joseph Robbins *Inserts a Disney song*
Joseph Robins Me too... I genuinely have a lump in my throat after watching it!
I still only have a brandless guitar and a sh***y dean guitar 😭😭😭
Grey Carlile doesn’t mean my dean is good 😫
Do you got a vendetta? That thing I've heard is horrible.

My 4 year old son does all my relic.
pher8487 my dad did my relics when I was 15...to my brand new gibson sg............
Cameron Crane your horror must have been tremendous
Midnight Gaming I see you watch king of the hill so let me make a situation to describe the indescribable. My reaction was just about like if somebody told hank hill that they don't sell propane anymore because now they have all battery powered grills.
Holy hell
I guess when it happens early you don't have that period where you're overly tender in how you handle a new instrument lol, that's how I am anyway. It's almost a relief when you get that first ding.
I will never understand forcing the look instead of just letting it happen naturally though. I guess I prefer it for what the look implies rather than how it actually looks
and there u've got a $3000 custom shop
😄👍👍👍

Relicing is best done given to a 5 year old to play outdoors
Well you'll never have to worry about fret buzz. :-)
Well..... if you have just a tiny warp now in the fretboard, be prepared to have fretboard buzz for life now! take it from a fretless bassplayer ;)
I just noticed when he put the radius gauge on the very ends were not touching the fretboard. That was a 12" radius gauge I thought he said? Look like it got sanded a tad flatter than that. Just an observation.
i think the hammer on the guitar was a bit too much, it seems like the guitar was beaten instead of being worn out by playing. Just my opinion tho
@Lord Jock agreed. A hammer is much too distinct of a mark - holes like that scream fake. The wrench was a better idea, smaller holes that don't look like they were distinctly from one thing
it looks horrible
Fede Barrena completely agree; see my comment above...
It's been worn out by being played by a very clumsy person 😅
@@andreeadobre3190 🤣🤣🤣

NEVER let your guitar watch this torture! 😄
A teardrop fell when you took that hammer...! Btw cool video!
laughed out loud when you brought out the hammer. the tools were getting more and more intense I was expecting a chainsaw next and then maybe a handgun!
😄👍
Not a bad idea to put the body down range & use it for target practice. lawlz yesl!!
All for the reliced look.
shitmandood • A 2018 Fender Rangemaster©️? 🤔
wow. . .seriously though, a guitar body with bullet holes would actually be pretty cool.
i hate relicing more than you can imagine.
Michael Schneider why
Then the world is in balance cuz I love it.
He probably doesn't like someone playing a guitar that is worn intentionally when he worked hard to develop a skill to match the wear of his own guitar.

I have no respect for people with fake scratches, you have to earn them

my kids relic'd a guitar for me once. It was quite the surprise!
3:48 THIS WARNING NEEDS TO BE MORE SERIOUS!!!!

That turned out remarkably well. I can't lie I cringed a lot though.

What does the jumper wire do?
nice job!
Hi!
It adds the bridge pickup to the second tone control ☺
Michael H it jumps. 😁
At least you gave a warning before the "Relic job." As for my reaction, all I can do is to quote Meg Ryan in Joe VS The Volcano... "I have no response to that."
And to think I shed a tear, on the small chip, on my Telecaster. Great channel. Always, learn something.
Your videos are in a league of their own for entertainment. I'm inspired to do some kind of project myself now. Thanks for showing the process and hope it turned out the way you wanted it to!
Thanks! I really appreciate the kind words ☺
Now I know sanded rosewood looks like chili powder.
Except that you officially need a CITES form from your government to import/export it... costing €45.-
It actually smells like roses. Seriously. . that's why its called "rosewood".
The relicing actually made me audibly gasp :( Turned out neat as hell though! Nice job :)
Yeah, it's surprisingly hard to watch!
Did I mention I hate reliced guitars?
musixmylyfe that was so funny...
I hope that this wasn't a Customers Guitar brought in for you just to fix a Crackly Selector Switch? If so, you need to convince them that it needed a complete restoration! LOL!
😄👍
Nice job I love you so much but the moment when you start damaging the quitar I felt a punch right to my heart good job
I was intrigued and watched every second of it, but was cringing at the same time. Don't mind seeing wear and tear on guitars, but I guess relicing is not my thing.
PJ Yim At least it was a Squier rather than a Custom Shop Fen....
Oh.
agreed someone hitting it with a hammer is not aesthetic.
LOVING the guest appearance from the dog!
Thanks!
Darell you are so guitar crazy...insane! Please don’t ever change.
You're a brave man. I've been a tech for quite a while and I am honestly floored by how awesome that fretboard turned out. I watched Part 1 and thought it was a lost cause but you pulled it off. I have a few spare strat bodies and necks laying around; I think you convinced me to try this with a Warmoth Baritone conversion neck.
Loved you little cute assistant - great video Darrel cheers mate
🐕😍👍
I was skeptical about the relic at first. When I saw you relicing, at first I though: "Oh come on, really, is he gonna hit it with a hammer!?" The relic process is heartening!!
Not a big fan of the beat up relics. But i never really understood the appeal of that look at all, or why it's only fender guitars that have it, while everyone wants a shiny gibson. Other than that it looks pretty cool, and challenging to play
I think we have Rory Gallagher & SRV to thank for the relic look. I’m only a fan if it’s naturally occurring...
I love the ebony stain, but I am a little bit confused as to why the 12” radius was required... Maybe Darrell can enlighten me?!?
Keep on!
lol, you should have let your dog chew on it for a little while!
The "hammer therapy" worked better than I thought it would! Lol.
That strat could be a go to for a slide guitarist.
Wow! Super creative ideas. I love it!
Luthier tip: take the rosewood dust from the fretboard sanding and pack it into the fret slots. Then, let some water-thin superglue rush into the slots and harden. Sand the slots down until they are smooth again and you have a near seamless fingerboard. You want to fill the slots otherwise the strings could cause a bad bow in the neck that can vary with the weather.
the neck turned out amazing. That ebony stain is awesome!
Well, I almost cried... but you warned me haha
Really Nice Job!
No fret buzz :-D
I loved watching that guitar get all banged up it was uncannily satisfying. Rock on!!!
I like the sound - remeniscent of a Pat Metheny effect. Not crazy about the relic job, though - just not my thing. Ebony stain turned out well. I really like that part.
Great stuff my dude keep it up!! More like this!!!
Thanks Rick!
How to make a guitar heavily relic.
10/10 rating. Great Job.
Thanks man!
Darrell Braun Guitar 😊😊😊
Very inspirational Darrell. The only bad thing is, you've added another project to my long list of projects to do. Thanks for sharing.
😄 Sorry!
I appreciate the kind words!
What a sexy guitar now ! Can't wait for a full demo... on the same backing track !
I'll definitely do a full play-through demo 👍
The relicing physically hurt me and my soul. Worth it though :)
Great work on the relic! Really inspiring!
Thanks man!
I had to partially skip the relic part!! It was too hard for me to watch! Hahaha It ended up looking superb!!! Very nice work and excellent video... love your channel! 😁
😄👍 It was pure torture, that's for sure!
Facundo M. Pautasso. You and me both.😢
It was a cheap guitar...
the ebony was REALLY satisfying.
It's like I'm witnessing a crime 😢 I don't know Darrell dude, might have to turn ya in. Then again you did create a work of art...
Dude! You're gonna make me cry watching this!! Ouch...
Best to just skip to part 3! (Playing a fretless guitar)
So satisfying to watch! Excellent work Darrell!
Thanks Noah!
Watching the fingerboard sanding was sooo good. Then the relic part killed me inside
That was freakin' fun !!!
I really like the look of that fretboard!!
Darrel that was hard to watch my man.i cringed Every time you smacked that guitar with that hammer lol.really cool vid.i don't think I got the nads to do that.
Can definitely hear the upright bass tone on the fretless neck, fun project!
The relic process is a bit hard to watch. I could not do it on a nice guitar!!! You have my respect for doing that!!! Even if the guitar didn't cost a lot!!!
Cool project. I really like the update to the neck. Nice work!
Thanks!
Awesome video! Would love to see more guitar projects
Drew Plyler and without all the dust and fumes...nice
Sanding is love.
Sending is life.
Nice project, dude!
Thanks!
Thanks. I always learn a lot from your videos.
Today I learned how to turn a fretboard into a veneer.
I also learned how to make a guitar look like it was lent out to my 9 year old nephew for a week or two. LOL
Why is 'relicing a guitar cool, but relicing your convertible is not cool?
Love to see that played in an open tuning and have fun sliding around now.
I'll have to try that out!
Te karu Hayes they are battle scars
I never thought i would react the way I would to the relicing. I audibly went "aaahh"
Good for you, Darrell! Great to prove to yourself that you can do that. My guess is that you'll soon have mastered playing fretless leads!
Thanks!
It's definitely going to be a challenge! ☺
Darrell, it's something that you're quite up to mastering.
This looked like a lot of fun.
Sounds like a great project!
I have a Frankenstrat!, If you want to see it this is the link!

I didnt do that Job, but I know the boy who did this awesome work, and sounds pretty good!
iNeos95 looks amazing. I’m thinking of buying a Tele neck and trying to make it fit on mine.
The maple neck used on my strat its a fender certified one, feels unique! Super Fluid with Jumbo frets! You should try!
really liked the way the fretboard came out after the staining.
It sounds like a bass with a fuzz pedal. So weird. Haha.
Not bad. Cheers.
Whoa! It's there already. Just in time for my morning coffee and my scheduled fret leveling attempt today. Haha! Cheers!
Good luck! I'm sure it will turn out great ☺
I really would like to hear more sounds of this fretless guitar ! What does it sound with effects ? with clean sound ?
I'll do a proper play-through in a future video :)
WOW! That was tough to watch, and I was super unsure about how it could possibly turn out well, but that baby looks and sounds great! I'm surprised how much I liked that relic job, but it looks awesome. Maybe I'll have to try this sometime!
you should install a killswitch with your next build or for a video! love your channel!
Had the John Hiatt song “Perfectly Good Guitar” running through my head while watching this.
Awesome work man. You're impressive
Thanks man!
You cringe you lose
Wow! This guitar looks really great! And a fretless strat is an awesome idea! Cheers from Brazil!!
Thanks Vitor!
The file part on the guitar made me cringe so hard, Nice to see the end product looks great though!
My heart suffers for that relic job, but I really like the lofi jam at the end.
Well... it looks good! I didn't care for the scratches and gouges so much, though.
Unfortunately, it didn't sound as good as I was hoping. Maybe she needs some fine tuning somewhere?
Regardless, that was one extremely entertaining video to watch!
That was pure gore
I should have looked away...WHY DIDN'T I LISTEN?!? 😭😭😭
That relicing made me feel like I lost a loved one. I’m gonna go hug my strat now
Given that I have a Candy Apple Red strat, that relic job felt like blows to my chest. Not a fan at all of intentional relicing.
I read the "HEAVY" in the title and i was still surprised when the hammer was pulled out 😂 i like it
Hey man. I gotta ask. Do you shave with Braun razors?
Looks great. Love the neck. You did a great job!
Thanks man!
