Richer Beaver Dam Removal #4

  • Last day here and dam number #4 was huge! I did not get in the water at the bridge this time. I cut through the bush along the road. Getting the canoe out after was a bit difficult once the water dropped. The weather did not disappoint.....
    That's it for this job, 4 less dams now anyway. I am sure I will be back again in the near future. This was a good one for animal & critter photos. I don't often see that many moose in the same area.

    there was water running under it..................was there any particular reason for dismantling that lovely pond? I have no sound so you might have explained in the beginning.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bev.
      You bet. This was causing flooding upstream to the point that our town/municipality commissioned me to go do this. It was flooding a farmers hay field. It wasn't a pond but a stream that affects several properties if the water level raises.

  • @iwanabana
    @iwanabana ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I more than anything do find the flowing of water immensely satisfying. I used to love beaver dam removal videos, but I have since realized how much ecological value such structures add by slowing the water, recharging the aquifer, making the plants downstream grow much more resilient to changes in weather, and not to mention providing habitat for countless species by creating diversity in riverscapes with side channels and ponds of varying depths. And they do all of that for free.
    Post10 only does removals when a dam creates a hazard to infrastructure and I find that approach muuch more ecologically sound.
    There are plenty of other channels on yt that have information on river restoration efforts and the true value of beavers and their dams, how some people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to create log structures to mimic the beaver dam.
    I know this provides financial incentive to you, but perhaps you can assess with the about information, if your next dam removal is doing good or harm to the environment. Summers are hotter than ever, and beaver dams simply cannot burn.
    Cheers

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do this as a job for our township. I get paid to go do this. The dams you see me pulling are causing flooding on either roads, culverts, farm fields, or people's houses. I am not sure why you assumed otherwise? I did this for years long before I recorded it for TH-cam, 👍.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Believe it or not, I get paid. Normally, in the past, I would remove the beavers, and the town would take care of the dam. With rising costs in fuel and labor, I can price the jobs much lower and still earn a good buck. Plus, I don't spill gas or oil, and I don't need to make a trail through the bush just to get to the dam. And I can let the water out slowly so as not to cause flooding downstream.

    Hi Gene
    Really didn't like seeing that rain. We have had constant rain in the UK for weeks (and it's cold) so I much prefer seeing some sun for a change.
    Great job as usual, that was a big one.
    Loved the lobster, or was it a crayfish? Can you eat them? Or is it only salt water ones?

      It was a crayfish 🦞. That is a really good question! I had no idea, so I looked it up. Apparently, you can eat them!?! I am going to check this out and try them. They are very abundant here.

    What do you think how many night the beavers take to build this dam??

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  ปีที่แล้ว

      This one would have taken beavers quite a while to build up. I was here last year, so it took less than a year for them to build it.
      They can make a pretty big dam in just a couple of days, though.

      They usually work as a team but not very long. I cleared out this area a year ago. They can back up water like this in just a couple of weeks, depending on the supply of water.
