    I really appreciate that I can go back and rewatch these videos so many times. They don't date themselves. There's nothing wrong with topical entertainment, but the very PBS styling of these videos make them very rewatchable and great as educational materials for the art and technology that goes into games

    Having watched dozens of these videos, I have to say gaming historian may be my favorite TH-cam content creator of all time. These videos are television quality. The narration is top quality along with all other aspects of the videos. This is something I would expect to see on PBS and I enjoy that you style your content in that way. Cheers, can't wait for more.

      Yeah, the Japanese language likes contracted portmanteaus for some reason, like dejikame = dejitaru kamera = digital camera, or Famicom (=Famiri Konpyuutaa/Family Computer).

    Eh, the stereotypes don’t bother me much. I think, as long as they’re jokes or at least aren’t used in a rude or offensive way, and people don’t actually believe that everyone in the stereotyped country acts like the stereotype.
    I especially love the stereotype that us Brits all speak like old rich people and spend all day drinking tea while playing croquet. It’s not accurate, but I love it.

      Punchout is one of those games that makes fun of everyone and it has some amazing characters for it. It's a shame that the series is in the void space because of it though. After all we can't have Mario asserting Italian supremacy in current year.

    I'm sorry, could you please explain to me how those different international Mario cutscenes were even SLIGHTLY prejudiced or racist in any way? It just portrays the general culture of the nations they're depicting. There's nothing hateful about them. As a hispanic person myself I don't really feel any reason to feel angry seeing Mario in a sombrero. I have no clue why you're uncomfortable. Simply portraying different nations' cultures is not racist. The only people who make a big deal of it are themselves casually racist. We don't require you to make an executive decision to be offended on our behalf.

Your side consists of nothing but pathetic snowflakes who get triggered and have panic attacks if you so much as see someone wear a t-shirt with a logo you don't like. There is not a single "strong" person on your side, just a throng of anxious, overly emotional, coddled trust fund babies unaware of their own hypocrisy. Everything you say demonstrates how out of touch with reality you are, and this is why your ridiculous idealism is nothing but fantasy best reserved for toddler bedtime stories. As long as there are two people left on this planet there will always be disagreement and controversy, and your ideals of "harmony" just create a wider divide.

      People are trained by society to be "uncomfortable" about the differences between cultures rather than accept the fact that it's our differences that are humorous. If everyone just calmed down and stopped being offended by harmless stereotypes, we could all enjoy a good laugh...not at each others expense, but together. It's too bad everyone is so bloody sensitive these days and people take pleasure in feeling like they are being put at a disadvantage.

    In Japan I don't think racial caricatures are as gravely offensive as they are elsewhere. There are many times (in general) where you can spot a ridiculously stereotypical Japanese caricature amongst the others, so I think it's safe to say it's just a matter of differing sensibilities. It just seems to be a part of the Japanese sense of humor to poke fun at the way humans tend to differentiate themselves.

    4:03 Why does Mario appear in a stereotypical way?
    Because it was a Japanese manga style. Until at least the late 2000's, Japanese people frequently had the opportunity to see this stereotypical art style of "Gaizin(外人/がいじん=foreigner)" pictures in children's picture books and even in Osamu Tezuka's manga like Astro Boy.
    Until the spread of smartphones in the late 2010s in Japan, "Gaijin" were a rare sight for Japanese people. So, there was a kind of Japanese manga culture to exaggerate their characteristics in that style.
    ...And even today's Japanese talk about Sushi, Sumo and Samurai when we chatting with foreigners lol.

    Qix was made by the Japanese company Taito and they pronounce it as quicks. However, everyone in the USA says kicks, so you could argue that kicks is correct for the USA. As far as I'm concerned, if the creator says it's quicks, then it's quicks.
    It's like the character Lucina in Smash Brothers. The correct way to pronounce her name is Lukina (like Luke Skywalker) and that's how they say it in Japan. However in the USA, it's Loo see na. Again, just because foreign countries fuck up the name, doesn't somehow override the original pronunciation, so Lukina is correct.

    • @Shuda87
      @Shuda87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a good point, but in the case of Lucina you have to consider that it's an real name with heritage from Europe (More specifically Italy or Germany, I believe). Add in that Fire Emblem is very much based on a European medieval setting, and it's pretty fair to say that the "proper" pronunciation would be something like Lu-chea-na.

      ルキナ Is her name in Fire Emblem and Smash Brothers, so that's that. Isn't it nice how Japanese is a phonetic language? We don't need to spend much time trying to figure out how to say stuff. Dedede is another one where the pronunciation varies based on region. I want to be right, so I use the correct pronunciation.
      I play the Japanese versions of games, partly because I like having correct names, etc. But mostly because I love video games and know that Japan has the most good games and the best versions of games.

      The announcer pronounces her name as "Loo SEE na", so it's just as correct as the Japanese version.

      He pronounces her name correctly in the Japanese version. What is the name of the boxer character in Street Fighter? M Bison, right? Just because the American version fucked up the names doesn't make it override their original Japanese names. It's pretty obvious that M Bison is the name of a boxer since the name is very close to Mike Tyson.

    • @NoeLPZC
      @NoeLPZC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inazuma65
      The same names are pronounced differently in different languages - as long as the pronunciations are made by the developers of the game they're "correct", regardless of the developer's location/language. All the English Pokemon names are "correct" despite being very different to the Japanese names.

    One thing that would be interesting to hear about is more about how the Origin titles are interconnected, and considering how influential Origin were back in the days, I think it would be nice for people who are not as familiar with the company & its work to hear a bit more about it (Fun fact: Ultima was one of the main influences on early JRPGs, while not as influential as Wizardry, the developers of Dragon Warrior/Quest & Final Fantasy were still heavily influenced by Ultima, so that should help convince the people who grew up with consoles of Origins importance ;) But that's obviously not the only important thing they did). The ones I know of are the Kilrathi fighter in Ultima 7, the Kilrathi in Ultima Underworld, the "Tie fighters" in Ultima 1 (which were retconed into ships from the Wing Commander series), the beds from Bioforge being used in the Crusader series and the system for writing dates being the same in the Crusader series & System Shock. While officially these games are not in the same universe, Origin still liked to make cameos. Also related would be Ultima & Dungeon Keeper, made by Bullfrog (watch the intro to Dungeon Keeper and compare it to Ultima 8, also the last level in Dungeon Keeper shows the same important character).

    Not Mario in blackface or pulling his eyes into a slant while wearing buck teeth. You know, ACTUAL racism.

    Hey, Gaming Historian. If you don't read this no big.
    I really like your show a lot. Your humour is super subtle and not to shoved in your face.
    Why I personally enjoy watching you over say, spacehamster is because the gaming and appreciation for the medium comes first. Not you constantly mugging to the screen every two minutes or shoving special effects down our throats. For me, those shows run out of steam because being "Funny" on camera is hard to do. One is bound to start re-using the same jokes over and over. You keep the focous on the video games and not you trying to be overly cute.
    Thank you so much for this show and the dedication you obviously show.

    When you criticize Nintendo for the "stereotypes" you have to remember this was thirty years ago and it was Japan. Everyone wasn't butthurt for simply representing what people look like from a region yet. You are applying today's PC to thirty years ago in a foreign country. That is your fault.
