I REALLY enjoyed watching this reaction!! Your face, the smile....amazing. I grew up with this music. Gary wrote the orchestration himself -- he was a highly talented man.
Gary Brooker was 22 years old when this song was released in 1967. He was 61 when this concert was performed in 2006. His voice was just as great 39 years later. RIP Mr. Brooker.
Proco Harem took a classic song from the 60's and added a choir and orchestra to make a truly beautiful masterpiece. I must have watched this a 100 times, and I tear up every time.
I'm so glad you didn't stop the performance at any point. This song deserves the full uninterrupted experience. Also very happy that you loved it as much as we did.
That orchestra, that choir, that band, Gary Booker’s killer vocals, that iconic song, and all in a Narnia like setting! Never to be matched again! A moment stolen in time…🤯
Thank you for not stopping and interrupting this masterpiece. An orchestra and a choir ALWAYS elevate any song! Imo he sounds better with age on this song than he ever did when younger! Always makes me cry watching this version..
I still remember the first time I danced to this song. I'm 72 years old and still remember every word. What a beautiful performance this was. Gary Brooker still could sing his a$$ off. RIP Gary Brooker. 😍🤗🙏
❤🎉❤I'm 72 also, and everytime I hear Gary and Procol Harum and the Moody Blues, I get teary and sentimental!! 😢 We were so lucky to live in the this beautiful music!! 💞🎵💞
This was one of the best live performances I've ever seen. The musicians were absolutely on point, the backup vocalists were TIGHT, the recording and mixing was perfect, and Gary's singing was amazing. Everything came together perfectly.
I AGREE 100 % I was a 20 year old Junior in college when this was released in 1967, so I was 13 in 1960 and 22 in 1969, the best age to be in the '60s.
It is your job and ours to remember these great talents who slowly pass on. These iconic classics will be remembered until the sun rises and sets no more.
The song was released in May of 1967 and quickly became iconic for the era. It was an important song for me on the soundtrack of my late teens and first term at university. Every time I hear it, especially this orchestral live version, it takes me back to the summer of 1967.
Gary Brooker just got better with age. His voice is whiskey and smoke in this performance. He is so missed by people of all ages it seems. RIP and sing with your angel brethren.
They just don't make music like this any more. I am old enough to remember when this song first came out and it has always been one of my favorites. Thank you for this video. It brings back so many good memories.
Thank you! I love ❤️ this song and this is absolutely the best version ever! Freakin goose bumps EVERY SINGLE TIME I WATCH THIS * I typed that right before you said it 😂
Thank you for introducing me to Procol Harum. I was not familiar with this band although it is likely I have heard them and just didn't know it. When the lead vocalist started singing, I initially thought I was hearing Kenny Rogers (that is intended as a compliment).
Gary Brooker is an icon. His voice in this performance had not changed from the original 1967 version. He passed in 2022. RIP Gary. Go back and check out the original version. It will blow your mind! Love your reaction!
I was lucky enough to see Procol Harum in 1975 and hear them perform this amazing song. Totally agree with lots of others that like a vintage wine, Gary Brooker's voice matured and flowed with a full-bodied richness. Thanks for your reaction and for listening uninteruptingly to this great talented man and musicians.
The Hammond B3 was the main featured instrument in the original studio recording. It did NOT have a full orchestra like this. The origina; is great, but this is ***SO*** much better!
For another great live performance check out the Moody Blues and Nights in white Satin. Also released in 1967 and performed over 40 years later at the Royal Albert Hall. All the best, Peter.
I've never heard this song until I saw this video. I love it when orchestras take classics and compose and incorporate the original....musical creativity at its best. Thanks for sharing.
I heard this for the first time in the movie "The Big Chill". This version is 23 years later and gives me the same chills I had, the first time I heard it!
The MOODY BLUES song you are referring to is "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN" I gave him the link above, for that live performance you mentioned. I hope he will do a reaction to it.
As one who seeks the most magical performances, one where a Supreme being has definitely blessed; THIS is by far one of , if not the most blessed magical performances.
Dave, the reaction you're having is the reaction we ALL have listening to Gary absolutely BELT this song, note perfect, at 61 years of age! The orchestration & choir are haunting and sublime, and perfectly fits this already incredible song! I'm 65 and have been listening to this song and Procol Harum since this first hit the radio. The first time I saw this video, I was completely captivated and utterly floored at how powerful it is! I've seen this video I don't know how many times now and I cry EVERY time! It is that beautiful and thrilling.
I'm with you. Live performances are fun to watch. When a live performance is absolutely beautiful like this one, it's a magical experience. This song always makes me cry and I don't really know why. I was barely born when this song came out. There is something haunting and longing about the music that just reaches into you and moves you.
I'm happy you came up on my algorithm. I loved your reaction, sub immediately.. grew up in the 70s the song made such an impact on me as you referred to it as haunting...ty
Love the Charles Wesley Godwin t-shirt. One of my favorite new artists. I saw him play live a few months ago. Incredible performance by him and his band.
Growing up in the sixties my older teenage sister through a massive New Year’s Eve party! Well after midnight, I watched all of her inebriated friends waltz slowly to this song! Time to go home!
Bands that were playing high school dances in the 60s had to add an organ when this song came out so they could play it. Still takes me back to those dances.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made .. I am one of the few who actually like the Album version better, because the tempo is a little bit faster and never stops rolling..(That is what I`m used to hear..).. in my point of view, It also gives a true/better feeling of the period it was released ..in May 1967.. one month ahead of what got to be remembered as the "Summer of Love .." //Peace for everyone !
Gary Brooker was a great singer and musician. This is such a great performance. You might try listening to Whiskey Train by Procul Harum, one of my favorite guitarists Robin Trower wrote that song and was with Gary in this band and in the Paramounts in the '60's.
Yes, some live videos stick out! Usually they got huge numbers of views. One I return to now and then with "only" 12M is the mature Bryan Ferry (of Roxy Music) making a cover of Neil Young's "Like a hurricane" in Lyon, probably in 2016. Bonus is a saxophone solo by Jorja Chalmers.
Hi 👋. Just stumbled across your channel. I am obsessed with people seeing this masterpiece for the first time and enjoying their minds being blown! Lovely to see you react to this. As you seem to react to live performances, may I suggest, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), performing ‘Telephone Line’, live at Wembley Stadium 2017. First released in 1977. I think you’d really enjoy it. 😊
Wow...just wow! I saw them in the early 70's. They were fantastic. But THIS was one of the best performances (by ANY band), I've ever seen. Thank-you Dave.
This song and not the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! A group in some ways very similar in styles to the Moody Blues! I was familiar with Procol Harem(named after a friends cat), but until this live performance floored me, I hadn’t realized how great they were! They never got the notoriety they deserved after the success of this song!
@ Yes, it is an iconic song, but as a group with at least 12 albums of Great Music, they didn’t receive anywhere near the accolades they deserved beyond this Great song!

Sadly Gary Brooker passed away in 2022 but what a voice he had right into his 70s.
Yeah definitely a strong voice late in his career. Doesn't normally happen but I guess he looked after himself!
His voice is better now...This was the first album I ever bought...
@@DaveWildheart the performance of A salty dog from the same concert is even better...........
Gary Brooker was 22 years old when this song was released in 1967. He was 61 when this concert was performed in 2006. His voice was just as great 39 years later. RIP Mr. Brooker.

I remember when the song first came out. Gary’s voice got better with age.
Yeah mad that he had such a great voice so many years after it was originally recorded.
No, it didn’t. Sorry, but there comes a time when the edge gets lost….
Bach and his pals would be impressed of how music came this far😊 and even more that the masses could enjoy it. 😊
He had such an amazing voice! R.I.P. I get goosebumps every time I watch this, and that’s been a lot!

The orchestra 2006 versus the original without.. both versions amazinb. But the 2006 with orchestra had me crying and chills.
This performance always makes me tear up, the voice, the strings, keeping to the original score, perfection ❤
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. It’s been giving me goosebumps since 1967. ❤️
You would probably enjooy "A Salty Dog" which waspartofthis performance. It is lesser-known but equally beautiful!
Thank you! I love ❤️ this song and this is absolutely the best version ever!

I actually think his voice here was better than the original.
I'm sure someone else mentioned this but the opening is "Air for the G string" by JS Bach
I've listened to this tune hundreds of times. I'm 62. This particular rendition is very invocacating. I'll be happy to hear it again with you!
I saw Procol Harum in 1972 and the Eagles opened up for them at the Santa Monica Civic Center

The song is a classic which still holds up today. The Miller's Tale is one of the stories in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Rest in peace Gary Brooker.
I was a 9 year old girl with a Black Poodle transitor radio 😅Thinking I was the coolest kid on the block the first time I heard this song .

I tear up every time. The way they add the layers is phenomenal. I just recently found this. I remember it from my youth but this is just magnificent!
Dave, you might want to check out "Conquistador" by them from that same concert. Nice reaction.😊
I cry every time I hear this song. I am not sure why…maybe because it reminds me of when I was young.
Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) (Live) also has an orchestra but maybe not what you'd expect. Front man of Styx btw
I'll add it to the list. Thanks!
If you are talking about the one with the school, that is phenomenal

One of the best live concerts! Also, Conquistador, and Salty Dog are awesome!
This and Moody Blues's song "Whiter Shade of Pale" are the two best live show that I have ever watched. Like this it has full orchestra behind them.
