- Following an extremely promising first album devoted to Dowland, here is another chance to hear Damien Guillon, accompanied by his ensemble Le Banquet Céleste, in a programme of solo cantatas by J. S. Bach. A noted recitalist, Damien Guillon is also invited to appear under the direction of such leading conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, Masaaki Suzuki, and Vincent Dumestre.

Bach has this incredible ability to transport us to another world entirely, one where we are free of all misery.
Beautiful!! I love this piece. Great tone. Depth from the lungs. No wild vibrato but true accents the way Bach intended. This piece always moves me to tears and joy at the same time.
The cantata Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust (Delightful rest, beloved pleasure of the soul) begins with this aria for alto, of extraordinary sentimentality. Musicologist Julian Mincham points out: "It is enigmatically poetic and its essence is an evocation of peace and inner satisfaction." I simply say, sublime. Thank you Herr Bach.

I suppose that if you read the text, hear the music and then judge, one can only agree that this interpretation has done right to the purpose of this piece: to be a divine example of 'ruh and seelenrust'. This piece does not ask for hyperbole or extremely affective interpretation: it is served best when the interpreter starts from the text, as Bach often did. This performance both embodies calm, acceptance and in some instances affection, all balanced against an outright perfect artistic skill.

How delicate ! I've heard Damien Guillon only once before, together with Eric Bellocq on the lute, performing songs by John Dowland. Also magnificent. Best counter tenor I've ever heard, with such a clean and warm voice.

Look, Damien Guillon is a rare talent, there ain't much more to say really. My favorite performance of his is his performance in Dido & Aeneas. This recording is unfortunately unavailable on TH-cam, and I want to make a point of this. The copyright holders have a valid claim, of course, but the age of TH-cam is upon us, and it's such a shame that these beautiful recordings are unavailable because of "what exactly"? Just let it go, damn it, the alternative is so much worse, needless to say… !!!

Damien it doesn't sound smooth. Damien I think you are missing the feel to the piece. Try putting your heart into it, your feelings, and don't think too much as that often-times can spoil a piece or make it drab. Damien I want to hear you. I don't want to hear technical, I want to hear Damien. I want you to open up. I believe that Damien is yet to be heard.

Damien Guillon I respect you as an artist, but in all honesty Damien still has a ways to go before he gets this Bach masterpiece down pat. Damien your voice is good enough but I just don't feel the interpretation is quite right. No offense. Have a nice day.
