So you're the culprit that caused the a mount lenses to be as expensive as they are right now. I used to see 50mm f1.4 for $50, now they're all $100+ with mold in optics.
I have had both of those lenses since I was shooting mainly a-mount, most of the old Minolta AF glass works great even on the mirrorless. I have a number of other Minolta primes and they all work surprisingly well. I currently have an a7r which is a bit frustrating because I have to chose between the ea4 and some light loss with clunky autofocus or the ea3 and manual focus. Another to check out is the Minolta MC Rokkor 58/1.2. I have mine converted to A-mount but there's no reason to do that now with mirrorless, just get a cheap adapter. Its a soft but a very nice lens. Mine is the later rubber ring version, some say the earlier metal ring version is better but I've never had the chance to try one myself.
Hi there! Thank you for a great video on this beauty of a lens. I wish I could find one for myself. But I have several other Minolta AF lenses. And I learned a way to enjoy them even more. Because on my Sony A77 and my Sony A6500 (with the Sony LA-EA4) all the Minolta AF lenses seems to backfocus (focus a little bit behind the actual target). But if I go into the the camera's menu and find the option "AF Microadjust." and change the settings to around -7 I get sharper results! And as I understand it the camera then can remember this setting for a number of different lenses. This has worked for me but I guess the results can differ between different copies of the Minolta lenses. I thought this could be of some help for you, in case you didn't know it already! 🌞
You're welcome! 🙂 Just play around with the settings there under Microadjust. If your lens instead tend to frontfocus, you do the opposite and change it to somewhere on the + scale. I guess it varies a lot on these old (but great) lenses. Enjoy!
WOW ! i need to mess with this setting, i have been using a couple Minolta lenses and also notice the focus isn't spot on. i have a A6700 and use a 70-210 and a 50 1.4 as well i really like the quality of images but i do notice the focus is always ahead of the subject even when Auto Focus says is on the eyes for example, its usually not.

I use minolta mount lenses on my a6300 all the time. I use to have a sony a65 (A mount camera) and the lenses are totally compatible. :) My documentary to get the university grade was filmed whit a kit and that minolta f1.7
I own the 2- 80-200 HS Minolta's and they focus a lot faster on my 3- A99m2 and A77m2 cameras vs me using the LA-EA5 on my A1 and I have shot hundreds of thousands of sports images with them and have no problems getting sharp pics! I use the 70-200 G Master II on my A1! I find all of my numererous A-mount lens focus faster on my fore mention A-mount cameras vs using the LA-EA5.
Thanks so much for watching! I guess that's the benefit of using lenses on their native mount. Even with the difference in performance, for the price of A-mount lenses now I still think they can be a great option for many people!
I've a Sony A7R3 and I start finding some vintage lenses that can't be adapted to Canon 5DS-R, including L39 and Minolta-Alpha lenses. Thank you for this review. I just ordered a Sony LA-EA5 adapter for Minolta Lenses.
Hi, , , as far as Speed and accuracy , autofocus and overall better quality in general , what would be a better choice : Minolta 80-200 2.8 , Tamron 70-200 2.8 or Sigma 70-200 2.8 ? With LA-EA4 , A to E mount , would Sony internal stabilization be sufficient using the lens that does not have optical stabilization? Or I should look for a lens in case of Tamron or Sigma that have optical stabilization to work along with Sony built-in stabilization ? Will mostly be using the camera for portraits, with strobe mights or without , and sometimes occasionally moving objects, but nothing to extreme, I would really appreciate your input on this ,thanks much !!!
Thanks for watching! As I'm not familiar with LA-EA4 compatibility or performance, I would choose Tamron or Sigma. I've heard pretty good things about the Tamron 70-180 f2.8, but I've heard mixed opinions on the new Sigma 70-200
Not sure about the G-designated version, but the difference between the white and black is that the white is slightly newer, with the HS meaning high speed, so auto focus is going to be quicker than the older version. White also has a dedicated focus-hold button which I believe the black doesn't. In terms of image quality I see many people say they are indistinguishable
Hello. I see that you're in Japan. I want to purchase an 80-200 and possibly a 200 2.8 for my A99. What is the best price I should be looking to pay for it.?
Thanks for watching and commenting! If you're planning on buying in Japan, it looks like 50,000 yen or about $350 is the max for most that I'm seeing on used sites (for the 80-200 f2.8). I wasn't able to find it in any local stores, but if you do, you may be able to get an even better deal. For the 200mm f2.8 I'm seeing around 40,000 yen or about $275 for that one. It may be worth checking if some Japanese sites ship abroad. You could maybe get a good deal that way too depending on shipping costs and if they ship internationally.
Hello, I realized what's the reason why this lens doesn't deliver as much performance; while it does autofocus quick and confidently on A mount cameras, it does not do so with LA-EA5 because for some reason, Phase detection autofocus does not work because of the adapter's limitation. Use the G D variants of Minolta lenses and you will have a solid PDAF workflow. LA-EA5 sees these old lenses as third party.
@@jd5787 Yeah same.. I've heard good things about the Sigma 85 f1.4 but I'm kind of addicted to saving insane amounts of money on these older ones now that I know how easy I can adapt them haha
