  • In this video I'll show you how to use tracing paper to create perfect, accurate outlines from your reference photo every time. Tracing paper is just one of the many tools available to artists of all skill levels and can provide quicker and more effective results than free-hand drawing.
If you're drawing a larger-scale piece of artwork, I recommend working in sections and piecing the sections together at the end like a big jigsaw.
I hope that you enjoy this video and that it's helpful to you, all resources will be listed below.
    Pencils:
I recommend a soft, bold pencil that will give you a nice strong outline such as the Staedtler HB2 pencil. Just make sure whatever pencil you use applies quite dark without having to press on really hard.
    Tracing Paper:
Any tracing paper will do, I get my A3 pads from Hobbycraft in the UK - bit.ly/307bM4p
This is the drawing paper I use for anyone interested:
Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Watercolour Paper in 640GSM

    Hi Shannon
I always trace to get the right proportions on pet portraits.
I only draw the outline once !
I flip the photo on my computer screen then draw the outline on the tracing paper .
Then flip the tracing and secure onto my paper .
Then go over the lines with a wider pencil scribbling over with back and forward strokes .Like a rubbing .Easy peasy...The drawing comes out the same as the photo.Hope that makes sense😆

Thank you for talking about this. I see a majority of artists are not free handing but won’t share that they are not. Why are they so secretive? I used to be so proud I never traced until I realized they are still making money, they can do 3x the artwork and clients don’t care

I think there's a lot of artists who believe it's cheating, so they won't admit they use it to risk any backlash. I was taught to use it as a time-saving tool in school and college though, so I've always seen it as a positive thing ☺️
I also see the artists who state that they free-hand and use it as a USP. I suppose it depends how much value you see in the outline, I personally think the bulk of the skill is in the colour and bringing your subject to life in 3D. Also selling art is a business at the end of the day and I think it's a wise business decision to save time on lengthy tasks wherever possible 🤍

It's such a timesaver for me! I used to spend so long on the outline before I'd even started on the colour. You'll get there with lots of practice ☺️

Aha, why didn't I think of a ruler to keep the screen from activating? Brilliant. I came to the realization that unless you are trying to express something through proportion, then there's no need to waste so much energy on it. Your energy is better served applied to the artistic aspects of the portrait (Like, for example, color or notan).

It's such a good little hack! I completely agree, there's no point spending hours and hours on a sketch just to say you sketched it free hand. It comes out looking the same if not better using a tracing method anyway ☺️

Brill video Shannon, I like doing it this way but I start by flipping the image on my tablet first so it removes a step xx

    • @shannonmullin
      @shannonmullin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Juey! Such a great hack I tried this a few times but ended up just sticking with drawing the outline 3 times as I sometimes got the proportions a little off. It's a great tip for anyone wanting to speed up the process though :)

Shannon thank you for showing this video. I hadn't thought of the ipad with the ruler in that way. WOW! You may have covered this in another video, but what drawing paper do you use. I am looking for a new ipad but not sure what size. Given that you use it for your reference photos do you have a preference or advice on this? Thank you so much for all you wonderful work and for sharing your expertise.

You're most welcome I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's funny what little hacks you'll find along the way - that ruler is a life saver for me haha! :)
I use the Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Watercolour Paper 640GSM Extra White - it's fabulous! I used to use the thinner version which is just as good too - it just got damaged more easily which is why I now opt for the heavier one. I just have the standard sized iPad, I'd love the pro but I couldn't justify the cost when I don't really need it to be that big. I would suggest the standard over a mini though as I imagine that won't be much bigger than a phone haha :D

@@shannonmullin Thanks Shannon for the info. I really enjoy your videos. They are so informative and inspiring. I am just finishing up a course and want to get into your Patreon...can't wait. Yes the larger ipads are really expensive so not sure I need the larger one either. Thanks again for your reply and all your great vids. Cheers & Happy Belated Birthday

I think they’re great for creating digital art but for standard stuff like resizing images it’s not necessary at all! That’s so kind thank you ❤️
