    I’ve studied and reverse engineered Daft Punk’s Homework era tracks with the mentorship of some of their peers (Alan Braxe/Zdar/Paul Play) and Daft Punk and their peers (whom were mentored by Bangalter) never used the sidechain feature. The pumping itself came from having the kick be the loudest thing in the mix. The kick should be hitting at around or exactly at nominal level for the 3630. Everything else is mixed around that. I also work within Ableton and don’t mix using the peak-transient information but rather the RMS meters. Usually multiples of 6 work well for setting up the levels. For example, having the kick be -18dBFS and the bass being anywhere around -24dBFS or -30dBFS still keeps the bass content there but also works along side the pumping effect. Furthermore, part of their sound was that they would also put their entire song through a Roland S-760 (which is famous for the sound of its converters) and then cut it up to do final edits/filters. :)

      Hello. Completely true!
      Also heard the s760 trick from people working with them. You must be very closed to those guys. Would love to talk with you! 😉😉 PM me!

      This is exactly right. You don't use the actual side chain circuit, you just slam the compressor hard with a loud kick and it starts pumping on its own from hammering it. Play with the settings enough and the buttons you'll figure it out.

    this was the compressor of underground rap from 92-96, it may not be good for cleaner types of music but for that old new york rap from the golden age it brings it together on the master buss like nothing else.

    The pumping effects of the 3630 are, while not easily noticeable to the average listener, vastly superior to the software versions. The Glue Compressor is close, but too clean in comparison. The 3630 almost has an EQ'ing effect where the highs roll off as the signal ducks, whereas the plugins keep the same frequency signal but add the pumping.
    Thank you for the detailed experiment- I'm going to start using my 3630 more now in my songs!

    I heard their sound also came from putting whole track in to roland S-760 rack sampler and put it thru. It was not just alesis 3630 or mackie 1604 or roland S-760. It was all that stuff and who knows what else combined

    just bought two of these off reverb for a great deal, might try modding them to beef up the power supply and op amps, then use them for serial parallel compression duty cause they sound great for electronic music parallel processing

    You don't use the side chain inputs of the3630 !!! To make it work like those guys, just make your kick louder and with more low end than the other tracks of your song, and you will have automatically this Daft punk sound !!

    I really like how you used it on that pad. I hadnt thought about that before. im still still not sure whether to get this or the mdx2100 though as im not a house or dance guy, and havent gotten to see it in action for hiphop style production.

    • @MarcRenton
      @MarcRenton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure I can think of using the 3630 for hip hop samples. Just think about squashing/side chaining some funk samples and how it adds rhythm to them. The mdx2100 I have to check 😎

    somebody knows how it compares with the Drawer 1978 sidechain compressor?

  • @TheJohnsofDoes
    @TheJohnsofDoes 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    There isn't any keyed sidechain compression in French House e.g Daft Punk, Alan Braxe, Motorbass, Fred Falke, or Ed Banger stuff Mr Oizo, Justice, SebastiAn. This myth never seems to die🤔not only did they not use it, but it's pretty clear from listening to any of those examples i cited above that the ducking is not caused by the compression operating from a different key trigger e.g kickdrum...

  • @Batmansaveslives
    @Batmansaveslives 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    But didn’t daft punk just use physical form machines with no software meaning a computerized daw and just made beats based off what they hear? Im not sure they went to technical on how precise their kicks or whatever sound they were making. Did they have like a physical eq that they can see on the machines they used?

    • @MarcRenton

    If using for side chaining I’m guessing that the compressor is tied up with that function (ie being used as an effect) I’m guessing that for compression on a finial mix you would need another compressor?

    • @MarcRenton
      @MarcRenton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like any other compressor, the 3630 has inputs and outputs and an extra input for the side chain trigger. Hence, you insert it as an insert-effect into your chain. You can do this on any track or your final mix.

    • @omenjh
      @omenjh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MarcRenton Thanks, what I mean is that if your using it as an effect then you can’t also use it as a processor to balance the mix at the same time, it would require a second device as the settings are set to make it pump rather that to balance the mix. In ableton I would have a side chain compressor after the group compressor, the group compressor balancing out the dynamics and the side chain ducking the group to the kick

    • @andremotz

      @@MarcRenton the only thing i can think of is vocals e.g. on "one more time" because you can hear the ducking even when the drums drop out. i apologize for how snarky my comment was, but its a huge misconception that daft punk and their contemporaries used sidechaining. the 3630 is just a really unsubtle compressor and boosting the bass is more than enough to make french house tracks pump, which is what they did
