Lovol TB554 Long Term Review - Are Chinese Tractors Worth Buying Yet?

  • After spending 2 years and 157 hours with this "new design" 4wd 55hp Foton-Lovol utility tractor made in China, it's time for a review. This tractor is on the same chassis as the TB404, TB454, and TB504 (I believe it's really designed as a 45hp chassis, it seems smaller than most 55hp tractors). It is also identical to the Northern Tool Nortrac 45XT and 55XT tractors. If you're curious about buying one of these, check out this video.

A mate has just last week purchased the Australian version of this 55 hp 4x4 - yes we expect a few minor issues with minor items that won’t effect the actual performance of the tractor - but these things won’t cause us the grief they seem to give you.
Purchase was through Tanner Track in Melbourne Victoria Australia- David the owner of this business is very knowledgeable about his Lovol tractors and we are confident about any support we will need from him - this is the advantage of dealing with a good local agent/supplier how knows his stuff.

well, that's the thing with Chinese equipment, the quality control doesn't really exist so buying it is like playing the lottery. Sometimes you get something good and most of the time you get something bad.

The container was supposed to leave China today. I will review this whole process from the start so you can compare if you like.

Western manufacturers of tractors have advanced so far with electronics, precise transmission, good cabin it rose price of all tractor in line from 80-150 hp. People in East Europe need tractors to replace older ones, but their options are 10-20 years old used tractors which usually require transmission and electronics overhaul. That is where Chinese tractors fill the gap. In my country YTO has a pretty good reputation for being reliable and powerful tractor with simple analog FIat mechanics. We bought new YTO 1304 (130hp) it had few assembly problems like hoses leak from cabin, and a faulty low pressure pump but technicians from representative firm Agrovojvodina took care of that in one day.
It would be great if Western Manufacturers had a line of quality analog tractors for poorer markets with nice cabin, but for now Belarus and Chinese tractors are filling that spot.

@@RajeshYadav-to5zq Price of Lovol, YTO and Belarus are almost parallel with differences of 1000 dollars in my country. We have two assembly plants, Agropanonka for Belarus and Agrovojvodina for YTO and maybe that is why prices are similar.
Does Belarus import complete tractor from country or does it assemble it in your country?

This topic is in my opinion really important for these Chinese brands. You should definitely realize, that you don't buy from the brand but from a good dealer, because they will be the quality control, the tech support, parts service etc. And at least here in western Europe it probably needs to be the dealer who sold you the tractor. Most repair shops can't get parts from them as they are not really integrated in the common parts systems. They will work on your 30 year old Deutz, Fendt, Fiat, IHC no problem, but they probably cant get parts for a Lovol.
Not even mentioning the chance of your dealer/importer going bankrupt and maybe having no source in your country for parts. It might not happen, but it is a risk able to render you machine useless.
From what I've seen of these tractors in real life, I am not supersized by the mentioned gearbox issues, they sound horrible when they shift or brake. The loaders also seem horrible with a lot of play, as if they forgot to install bearings. The filter placement seems random and sometimes in dangerous places if you wanted to take them to the forest.
Paint also seems to ship away quickly.
At least they have the proper exhaust, but they come from dealers, so they hopefully take some pride in what they sells.
Which is another point here in Germany. They mostly target horse owners and other hobby users, because the small Kubota or Deutz tractors are usually to expensive fro them and it sounds really good to buy a new tractor for the same price as a used old one. Especially if you are the typical horse owner that is not into mechanics and fixing their stuff and the new tractor seems smaller and nimbler. And this market seems to be full, everybody and their dog is trying to import some new cool brand from China or India with even more features on the sales sheet. When I see these adds I often get the feeling, that they don't care about the product and have no problem with screwing over a person who does know nothing about tractors, in fact that's their plan.
I mean probably isn't any different when you buy a used tractor from some guy, but as a professional I should have some proud and dignity in what I do.
Additionally I would also say that as mentioned before the target group is also different. If I understand it correctly, there is just a lack of tractors in that size and price range in Eastern Europe. Which makes sense looking at how farming worked during soviet times. And here in Eastern Europe during the fifties up to like the early nineties farmers grew their farms and always bought bigger and newer tractors with a lot of competition. Of course there were many bad tractors, but they are all long gone so there are still a lot of 20-60hp tractors from that time that are unstoppable and probably mechanically on a similar niveau as the chinese ones. And farmers got rid of them because they needed bigger machines, not because they were completely worn out (often enough). So there is actually a good second hand market and people have the choice to buy these tractors. They have a good dealer and parts network and there will be parts for them in 10 or fifteen years. So they are a good alternative, especially if you plan a budget to maybe repair some bushings or a clutch.
Especially because the target audience are hobby users. They probably can life without an enclosed air conditioned cab.
And for professionals here, they probably want the reliability and ease of use and service of a new tractor with a good dealer network, so probably see the value in buying a premium brand like Iseki, Kubota, MF or Deutz even in that size range.
It is probably similar in Kanada and thus I guess quite the different situation to your East European market and of course all in all the problems are all more from the "luxury" categories of course.

    • @stevangucu522
      @stevangucu522 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@humbucker0076 That is a pretty good conclusion.
I took a Chinese tractor because the net of dealers is good, assembly plant is 200km from my town, parts are plentiful, price is cheap and for 10 years that tractor proved well on the market.
I noticed that US and Canadian farmers are buying brand of tractors whose dealer is the closest to their farm. It doesn't matter if they like that brand or not, the dealer is there to provide service when ever is needed.
But as you said, there are scalper types who just buy these small tractors in China, ship them in Germany and sell them quickly without making a net for spare parts, warranty and regular services.
In my country people had issues with a importer of Turkish Başak tractor. 30 farmers ordered tractors and only 5 of them got them. Others were pressing charges against importer, asked for refund and even went on TV. I don't remeber well how it ended, but I think they got refunded in the end.

It's been a few years so the process may have changed somewhat. I got in touch with Lovol and told them I wanted a TB455 and asked for a price list on options and implements. Once we figured out what I was all ordering and what I was going to pay (the tractor itself was $14,900USD and I don't remember what the rest cost), I asked them to quote shipping CIF to my nearest port (Vancouver at the time). That was around $5000CAD. This process essentially made me an importer, which is a quagmire you don't want to step into, so I hired an import broker to deal with the carrier and customs paperwork. That cost somewhere around $2500 IIRC, although that included the taxes payable to the government on the tractor. Then I was responsible for getting the container it was in out of port, unloaded, and returned, I was able to tap a local warehouser with their own trucking company to deal with that (I believe that was close to $1000). I experienced an extra hiccup when customs decided to hold the container arbitrarily for inspection and took their sweet time getting to it, which ended up costing me another $3500 in demurrage charges (basically late fees for getting the container returned to the carrier, there is no way to predict this and it's just a risk involved with shipping and importing). When the container was finally released I headed over to the warehouser with my trailer and picked the tractor and implements up, they took care of unloading and returning the seacan. You can also just hire a trucking company to bring the container to you, but you'll need a way to unload the container and contents, which at the time I did not. Hope this helps

I was considering buying a Chinese tractor. We looked at a few of them. In the end we decided against it and spent the extra money to buy a Kubota. After watching this video I’m glad we did. It cost more money. However we got a zero percent finance deal and the resale value on tractors similar to ours high. I’ve seen a few second hand Kubotas around ten years old with up to 1000 hours and the price is within 10% of what we paid for ours. So I think if it’s looked after & not abused it should be a good long term investment.

Sure you are not just overfilling the head tank on the radiator - seems like level should be about 1” below top when cold - then it expands to just below the cap after warm up - this is how old style radiators worked that didn’t have an expansion bottle We used to fill the old style radiator (without an expansion bottle) to the top - then expect some overflow during the first run - then on checking when cold level would be 1” down this was normal.

The worst of the leakage is at the loader fittings, snake oil won't touch that. I'll have to replace them at some point. Trans additive won't help either, the inner bits just aren't machined to proper tolerances, if gears are gonna grind then they're gonna grind regardless of oil. I've tried 75w140 semi synth gear oil but have since gone back to TDH, it was the same amount of grind but with a reduction in power to the ground and PTO.

The equivalent tractor to the TB554 in a better name brand like Kubota or John Deere here would go for between $50-60,000 with taxes. The used market for tractors here isn't great too, they're either too expensive or they've been run into the ground and need never ending repairs (or both). There aren't many poor farmers here though, except for the guys who are managing farms for big conglomerates, if you don't have money you can't even get into farming. That one hydraulic connection with manual valve isnt just for case of emergency? like when engine is dead and you want to tow it away but arms are down, so you may pump pressure via that connection manually and lift arms that will allow you to tow the tractor away? I am just thinking...

I truly believe the tractor itself is the same since I ordered it direct from Lovol, however it does have a different engine than the ones delivered in much of Europe and it's clear they cut corners to fit that engine into the chassis. I am very curious to know what else might be different, however.
As for the hydraulic connection, this is what a Lovol rep told me: "When you close the cut off valve, the pressure oil cannot go into the lifter cylinder, it will go into the implment cylinder (for exmple, trailler download cylinder), then you can operate the lifter handle to control the implment cylinder." So it would seem to have a specific purpose, perhaps for a single acting cylinder on a dump trailer or some such.

But if I had, we wouldn't have anything but the usual fawning reviews from shills for potential new buyers

A guy I know is talking about buying one of these as if its a good deal. I'm trying to convince him not to.

Shouldn't be too hard, just tell him to go down the road to the dealer that doesn't exist and ask about parts availability.

Well, this steers me away from Chinese tractors. Can't imagine the other potential safety issues that aren't seen.

Can some one give me a legit contact who i would get ahold of if i wanted a price shipped to NS Canada looking at a Lovol TB504 full cab loader. $ 41,000 plus tax here at the moment just wondering if i can save a few bucks.
Tks for any help you can provide.
    Cheers

You save nothing in the end.Breakdowns, parts availability, not dependabl,no resale,on and on.if piece of mind means anything to you, stay away.Good video, nothing new here,Chinese machinery just is not worth the risk.

Geeish, you'd be better off with a tractor from Mexico, India, Russia, Turkey, basically anywhere but CCP Chyna.

In my humble opinion you were asking to much from the Chinese and buying sight unseen , maybe a simpler tractor they have the capability to pull off but this just seems like a bunch of left over parts From the super manufacturers plants they rigged together and called a tractor

100 % agree Chinese stuff is terrible at quality, they just mirror what they see from ligit brands and hope for the best.

Eehh 7:00 Why on earth and who on earth wouldn't like tractor to have handbrake?! If tractor doesn't have handbrake it's a deathtrap waiting to happen when coupling something.

I didn't say it shouldn't have a parking brake, but I realize I should have been more specific. I do not like the "dumb" ubiquitous Chinese handbrake that they put in all their equipment. Even my dads skid steer has one, it works very poorly and is the only skid steer I've seen to date with a handbrake vs hydraulic lockout. In every case it isn't connected to any kind of warning device or safety lockout, nor is it even in a visible place. More quality tractors usually have a parking brake operated electrically or hydraulically, it's placed right in front of you, and at the very least there is a light on the dash warning you that it's on. This design is cheap and shoddy.

Have you not been inside a new John Deere or a case for any other tractor for that matter they all have hand brakes

You are bitching and moaning over a cheap built tractor, because it is cheap for a reason man. You also went cheap by importing it yourself - no dealer back up. If you want quality build you buy Japanese - you know that. I would not be blowing the trumpet over that computer controlled engine, because when the electronics shit themselves - no body is gunna have a clue how to get it running again.

Think you will find that hydraulic tank is just a surge tank there is also hydraulic oil in the compartment on top of the transmission that this tank connects to - letting the oil level down a little in that upper tank won’t be a problem.
I have a Chinese tractor that doesn’t have this surge tank - you just fill the top compartment to a little over 1/2 full - never a problem.
