I traveled to Tanzania on this tour with "Face of Africa Adventures" and saw all these parks in this video in January of 2019 which is a good time. But When is the best time of the year for an African Safari, anyways?
We stayed at the FANAKA Safari Campsite and Lodge, right near Manyara National Park for 2 nights, in a bungalow. It was clean, comfortable and far superior to camping!
We stayed at the Kisura Serengeti Tented Camp in the Seronera region of Serengeti National Park for 2 nights. It was luxurious, and comfortable. They even had running hot water inside our tent and a flush toilet! Great food too! Excellent service by Maasai tribal staff. This tented safari camp was a highlight with a laughing hyena and other animals right outside our tent in the middle of the Serengeti Plains!
We also stayed for one night at the Rhino Lodge near Ngorongoro Crater. The food was probably the best here, and the bed was very very comfortable. There were elephants and African Buffalos in the yard, very very close.
The night before and after our safari, we stayed in the Green Mountain Hotel in Arusha which was very good too.
Face of Africa Adventures did a perfect job of hosting us in the best accommodations, and with excellent game drives every day. We would highly recommend getting a quote from them before you make any decisions on a safari. They seemingly take less profit and provide you with a better Tanzania safari experience than many, and we spoke to at least 20 companies before we settled on Face of Africa Adventures, based on price and quality.

We did the same thing with two young kids (11 and 13) about 7 years ago but started from Moshi (base of Kilamonjaro and you would have driven through it coming from Tanga) as we were volunteering there. We used African Scenic Safaris and loved every second of it. We had our own vehicle for the 4 of us and a very good driver/guide who like us, could sit and watch the big cats for hours and always seemed to know where to go to see the best wildlife without 8 other vehicles around. I can count on one hand the times we ended up at a spot with another vehicle. It was very reasonably priced even though we stayed in high end accommodations. We visited Tarangire, Manyara, Eyasi, Serengeti and Ngorongoro and spent a morning hunting with a Stone Age tribe of teenaged boys (caught (and tried) a squirrel and a small bird for six hours effort) and then visited a Bronze Age tribe and watched them smelt copper. I see you also discovered why those big yellow cats are called Lions... they are always lyin around! For others, if you are interested in African Scenic Safaris, ask for Simba or Rebecca the owners. Very down to earth people and they even had us over to their house (they arranged for us to stay with some doctors while in Moshi and we did some volunteer work with them and at some local orphanages). Can't speak highly enough of them.
Trip of a lifetime, definitely should be a bucket list item for anybody who wants to experience the real essence of Africa, ironic how similarly off road vehicles, be it 4×4 with trailer, or truck are kitted out to a yacht, house bank, solar, long range capabilities with regards water and fuel, supplies, living in a confined parameter, 12 v and 220/110 v power, etc, etc
I'd still like to do that trip through Africa, but that can be done later, and definitely in a Steyr Pugh Pinzgauer 6×6. One of those lightbulb design moments, it has a centre tubular chassis that incorporates the transfer case and 3 independently articulating locking differentials, with portal axles, coil springs and hydraulic dampers. Impressive vehicle

Very very cool trip, it is extremely rare to see an actual hunt and kill in the wild, you have been to some of the very best game viewing in the whole of Africa, I'm South African so none of this is new to me, I've also done the Okavango Delta, Chobe, Victoria Falls in light aircraft, mokoro, foot, 4×4 and house boat on Kariba, I had an ex military Land Rover series 3 109' which I rebuilt from the chassis up with the intention of driving it all the way from Cape Town back to the Solihull factory in England, well, as you know, things happen, I got in a relationship, bought a house and never did that trip, now after a 20+ year layoff from sailing yachts I'm sailing again on a 64' Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio ocean racer and am planning on selling up and getting a blue water cruiser just a tad smaller than Brick House, maybe a CSY 37' cutter or Moody 38' CC???? Driving is easy, you break something, you fix it, or wait till someone else comes along, and I noticed how many vehicles were doing these safari trips, same further south. Great video, it brought back many fond memories for me. PS it's a Vervet monkey, not velvet👍

Thanks for a great video. It brought back memories when I did Safari in Africa back in the early 90's. I was amazed to hear that you are 89. Is that true? I thought you were in your sixties. If you are 89 then you look amazing, your health is great and your mind is still razor sharp. What a great inspiration, you'll be still sailing when your 100. Thanks again for your great videos.

We have now been to a lot of parks including in S. Africa and Namibia. Serengeti and Noranguro are certainly the best. But there is one 1.5 hours drive north of Richards Bay, S. Africa which is best for Rhinos.

Have you been to the Caribbean, do you know much about the eastern Caribbean? I don't want to influence anyone but I much prefer the cultures, sights and adventures to be had in east Africa, across the Indian Ocean, Thailand and Malaysia. I've filmed in Africa on 7 different trips but never had an opportunity to go on safari. You are very fortunate to have these experiences.

They are indeed, I'm a South African and have done the Okavango Delta, Chobe Victoria Falls Zambia and a few other trips, but never made it up that far, even after rebuilding an old Landy for that specific purpose. It's a must. Definitely a bucket list item

Great video Patrick! The Safari tips were great, not just applicable in Tanzania, but probably for any African Safari. I love the part about the beanbag, and about how the weather on an African Safari can change from rainy to so dry so fast. I have asked Face Of Africa Adventures to provide their list of when is the best time of year for a Tanzania Safari...they are the experts in Tanzania National Parks for sure, and where to find the most animals, so it should be a great list to be able to put up. @@jonnorousseau3096 Agree... we did that as well. Took a 21 day road trip from Vic Falls, Botswana (Chobe plus three days on a Mkoro (dugout canoe) on the Okavango Delta), Namibia (Kalahari, Salt Pan, Swapomund, Fish Valley Canyon, and much, much more) all the way down to Cape Town. LONG days but well worth it. When we went (December), there wasn't much going on in the Delta from a wildlife perspective but in November, we had a fantastic safari in the Serengeti. The animals are somewhere there but depending upon when the rains happen, they'll be in different spots on the great migration and with the long grasses you may not see much. The migration was easy to find (we saw it right at the park gates) when we were there... something to see a million plus Wildebeast going from horizon to horizon. Totally unforgettable.
That was a great trip!

We did a self guided safari of Botswana and Namibia. Same experience, we didn't see any kills in action, though we did see a few failed chases. Gotta respect the professional guys who sit in a hide for months, waiting for that fleeting National Geographic moment.
That’s the truth!! We did get to see a nice lion dragging her kill in to a speck of shade in Etosha National Park in Namibia a few months ago, but still never a kill despite many safaris throughout Africa now. This trip to Serenghetti remains the best one we ever did! -Rebecca. If you Watch the very end of the newest one...#49 I think it is, you will see the most active Rhinos we have seen to date...in South Africa.
Welcome again. There are more destinations in Tanzania that you can visit next time like Selous, Mikumi, Mkomazi, Mahale, Saadani and Robondo island.

Oh gosh that’s a touch question! Seems like a lifetime ago! I would guess probably July or August as we were on to South Africa right at the end of cyclone season from there and that was September or October.

I am close to your age, and would like the accommodations such as you had, not the small tents. Can you please give some information about the prices, also for hotels, meals and transportation. Hi Jay, Rebecca handled all the logistics. She put a lot of that information on her blog site www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com then search safari. You should find everything there. In Arusha, the mediocre hotel we arranged for our self, they initially wanted $100 a night. That is outrageous and we ended paying $55. These people think all tourists are ignorant of the local economy and are willing to throw money at them. The final hotel we stayed at which we arranged for our self we paid $35. Taxi drivers in Tanzania are no different than in any other place in the world....so it is good to get a grasp of the real taxi rates before hiring one.
Hi...this is Rebecca. If you knew me, you would know I research to DEATH before making a decision. I think it’s called Analysis Paralysis. We finally went with www.faceofafricaadventures.com though if you went to our blog site it’s all there. After all the logistics of getting there, staying for 3 nights before the 6 day Safari, and 2 after, eating, sightseeing etc, it was right around $4000 for the 2 of us. A very big splurge for us, but totally worth it. If we had chosen the camping trip, it would have come out to roughly $2500 for the same. The extra $1500 was so worth it...it’s much more than just where you sleep...the whole thing is different...and the food is much better! And hot showers are nice too, since it’s chilly there at night!

Question.. Did you take any Malaria precautions? Pills.?? I'm struggling not to want to take any pills? or extra vaccinations .
The pills didn’t agree with me, so no. And we didn’t have a problem. Though we do know someone who did get malaria there.
Carolyn, don't bother with any vaccinations or pills. At all. Ever. Resist all that stuff.

Patrick just a tip for next time with regards the mosquitoes, drink gin and tonic, they don't like the quinine and use citronella lamps. NOTE this is a malaria area and necessary precautions must be taken, tablets at least 1 week prior to and after leaving a malaria zone, also a mosquito net to sleep under

Soooo much fun. I was watching a video about lions in Africa today with tears pouring down my face...it is just so wonderful to see the lions and all of the African animals, in the flesh!
I have lived in Tanzania for five years and is married into the Kuria tribe and lived in the mountains above and west of the Serengeti plains. There is an entrance to Serengeti National Park, the western entrance, north of Mwanza that I can recommend since there are not as many tourists there as in the other entrances. People in Tanzania are very friendly and welcoming and I strongly advise you to go there instead of the other two Eastafrican countries. Stay away from Nairobi!

Of course lions are not everywhere, but we did often see them, and close up, in the Tanzania parks. We just got back from Kruger and several other South African game parks and were surprised how difficult it was to find lions.
