  • @AnthonyIlstonJones
    @AnthonyIlstonJones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's actually a good car, & I prefer those wheels to the originals we have on ours. The engines are pretty boombproof, & the gearboxes are OK if you look after them & change the fluid regularly. It's a 16 year old vehicle so you're right about it doesn't matter if it gets a bit scuffed (and the bodywork isn't going to rust anyway). Your interior is the comfy leather & you'll be hard pressed to find a more comfortable seat in any car (we had a Land Cruiser Amazon that couldn't hold a light to it).
    If you're having second thoughts then I'd say pass it on to someone who can do the work themselves, if you're paying someone else to maintain them it does get expensive. But I'd challenge you to find a more comfortable car to be in, and if you spend a lot of time going from A to B that matters. They love cruising down the motorway. They don't like sheet ice so much though, Land Cruiser definitely had the edge on them there.

    Couple of points - I renewed front suspension with OEM arms on a 2005 RRS for £400 all in. Parts got from Rimmer Bros. Better value than LR parts. Who did you use for the key refurb? Need to get both of mine done. Great vid. Have a soft spot for the 2005 Disco 3’s as had one. Got rid of it when the injectors went. Now driving 4.4 V8 petrol RRS of same vintage. Love it.

    Another great video! On first thoughts I'd say sell to your friend like everyone else is suggesting, however the prices of used cars at the moment are crazy, so trying to find another project is going to be tricky. There's very little on the market worth buying at 1500 quid, and there all heaps with trouble. So in current mad car climate, and winter approaching I'd stick with it.

    Save it.
    Early HSE models are now getting rare, plenty have been broken for parts and good ones are now getting thin on the ground.
    Personally I would do the work and get it sorted. But then I also have an early 54 plate HSE so I’m rather biased.
    Has the handbrake been 100% confirmed as the module and not just needing shoes and correctly set up and adjusted?
    Meyle HD front lower arms are the go to choice for discos. 4 year warranty and with genuine bolt kit it will transform the front handling with a matching set of good tyres.
    You’ll also be stunned how good the seats can look with a steam clean.
    I got mine done by one of Scotland best detailing guys in 2018 ( Steven Bryce) and they looked new and not like seats with 188k use.

    After years of motoring in new or nearly new cars and feeling precious about where you park it etc. I have switched to older second hand. What a revelation! Not being bothered about being precious anymore, get to own an interesting variety cars without fixed term financing and actually enjoy motoring much more. Does it also help the environment? Carbon footprint of a new EV versus a 10 year old petrol Honda (at the moment), which is better?

    Hi Matt,
    Love the Range Rovers, butt to drive them in The Netherlands you would go bankrupt very quickly even at a steal buy at 500 Pounds.
    We pay road tax according the weight of the car in combination with the type of fuel. Sinds Diesel isn’t wanted anymore by the government it’s really expensive especially for older diesels like this one you drove.
    It would cost you 3548€ per year just on road tax alone 😱 So no Range Rovers for me! 🤣
    Looking forward to your next video.

    Hans

    Giving it to your friend seems to be the safer option. Unless you want to take a risk it by repairing it and then selling it for a higher price. I mean, you took a bet when buying it, I suppose why not do it again and make a third episode out of it?

  • @richardsmith3772
    @richardsmith3772 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe I heard you say OD 220K miles. Wow, that's incredible. I'm looking now at buying a used LR3 but wondering if kept up on the maintenance, how long would one expect an LR3 to run (300K-500K).?
    My friend has an impressive 2005 LR3. He removed the air shocks and installed high-performance coil springs and uses it as a tow vehicle with a custom 8-point touch receiver (as opposed to the stock single point 7700 lbs stock tow receiver). I believe the car is very over-built and very underated. LR was owned by Ford during the reign of the LR3 and when looking up at my friend's LR3 from below, I see the hardened chassis beams of a Ford 350 Super Duty truck.

    • @shaunbava1801
      @shaunbava1801 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LR3 has a 4.4 V8, from what I gather there are plenty of examples in the US that have made 300k miles. The 4.2 jag engine is good(which the 4.4 was derived from) and can probably go 400k miles before it's toast if it was properly maintained. These trucks are built like a tank but cost a ton to keep on the road, they eat tires, bushings, control arms, tie rods, etc. At this point pattern parts are cheap but the labor to repair is high, it isn't the easiest thing to work on. Oil changes and brakes are easy, but changing suspension parts is a PITA, repair costs are significantly less in the UK than in the US. Changing the gearbox oil in these is critical if you go to an Land Rover dealer in the US they'll quote you something like $2500 for that job, book time is like 8 or 9 hours to drop the pan, 7L of fluid they charge $70 each, over $300 for the pan, gasket, and the always leaking valve body sleeve. Even doing it one the cheap with metal pan kit you get at rover parts is $300 and labor still costs around $500(need to go to a specialist, no regular mechanic wants to touch it), so a simple transmission service is like $800 and that's doing it on the cheap.
      There are tons of running scrapped 4.4 motors just because the cost of repairing these cars is prohibitive but the engines are still fine. Rust is a major problem in land rovers of this vintage in the north eastern USA.

    Hi Mate
    I had one for 7 years and sold it because even though I had looked after it and was a good one I couldn’t justify spending what it needed to keep it going in a roadworthy way which was basically what it was worth on the market April 2021 it needed a new gearbox torque converter front diff rear control arm’s new airbags for the suspension new windshield central locking probably a new handbrake so goodbye to 235 kilometres of driving!!
    Bought a defender 110 TD5 still got it and a month ago bought a D4 V8 which I love ❤️

    Let your friend have it….maybe he can do some work himself….brakes are easy to replace. The parking brake is a bugger to get at, so might be best for a garage to remove. The gears within the mechanism can be replaced, but the cables tend to rub through so will probably need replacement as well. Think the front struts are fairly easy to replace, just cost a few quid.

    My Disco 3 has the Mk4 LED lights, it's the HSE and I use as my occasional 2nd car. Would not sell it - it's way too useful for carrying stuff and as I'm rural in case I get snowed in!

    Paid 17k AUD for a V8 D3 with 116km on it. They go for quite a lot here just due to how popular 4wds are at the moment. Pleased I didn’t get a diesel though.

    Maybe he put peanut butter in the gearbox, that's buttery sort of. Agree on the new number plates looking good. Sometimes new screws and a bit of t cut on rusty marks is enough. One of headlight bulbs looks a bit crap. Some good quality matching bulbs would be good.

    I's always a prime show watching you talk about a Land/Range Rover Matt😆 You speak from the depth of your soft spot that they're as decent as any other car,..but then the list of repairs comes up, and theyre like 1K a pop, all 6-7 of them, the absolute definition of The Money Pit and cars you should run away from😂

    That is a common fault the handbrake if you can do the discs and brakes yourself is not expensive britparts are cheap for all landrover parts try them on line spend the money then sell it someone will love it even if you make two hundred pound it's been fun for everyone 🔧🔧👍👍

    Channelling your inner Mike brewer, swapping out the private plate for sale on eBay, then swapping the wheels and onward selling the current wheels. At the end you can tot up £2k of profit (without factoring in the Ed China labour). I suggest selling to your friend, and giving him the links to the eBay wheels, etc.

    Hi Bud, just searched up the MOT and from what I can see, the miles have been rolled back on this car as it read 241,621 on 23rd November 2018 and then in 2019 it went back to 219,074. Don't know if that would be an issue but it's just something to take note of!

    • @HighPeakAutos
      @HighPeakAutos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it’s a typo. The annual mileage is steady then it suddenly goes up. You see this kind of thing all the time. It’s probably just an idiot mot tester in a rush

    Another excellent update... £25 Instead of an offocial Land-rover key (which would be a lot more)... goes to show that is it really necessary to follow 'The' logo?... The Land-rover is becoming like Kah the snake in the Jungle Book... it's got you pinned by its hypnotic peepers... 'Trust in me... hold still please'... almost there... whilst we watch with baited breath!

    I've owned 2 of those exact model and they all had the had problems after they went over 200.000 miles the resulting of the repairs needed were eventually a new engine which isn't worth it
    Personally they are brilliant vehicles but I had a bad run of them
    Has anyone else had similar problems???
