I have had this pole saw attachment for over 10years now and have removed/pruned dozens of fruit, ornamental and hardwood trees. I has been fantastic with it's only downfall being the length. The longest one you can get is from Husqvarna and tops out around 14ft for around $700(Stihl 12.5ft for the same). I have them beat by over 3' and think I could add even more with a larger truss to support the weight. Carbon fiber tube with carbon fiber driveshaft and the possibilities are......

Great idea! Using a polesaw on a ladder is no fun. I've been given several attachment capable trimmers over the years that either weren't repairable or didn't make sense to repair. I knew I held onto them for a reason! As pawpaw Bob says "I throw nothing away, I'll find a use another day"
Yeah throwing stuff away that I could use someday is a very difficult thing for me.

Next time make the pole longer. So the end rests on the ground. You will find it is much easier to control everything. You can use a heavier pole too.
Thinking outside the box just make the box easier.

When I got out of high school one of my first jobs was with my neighbor who cut down trees and dug stumps. Urban lumberjacks cutting big trees in the city next to powerlines, tree huggers, noise police and gangs of little kids getting in the way need their own show on the discovery channel. This was a cool tool. Combine it with a long ladder and you could do a lot. I loved the suspension part.
Digging stumps is a hard job.
Never try a pole saw on a ladder. It is too easy to get off balance and have a major accident. 🤕
Also helmet and goggles are needed since the cutting is almost over your head.

Not too bad if you can rest it on your hip, but otherwise it'll wear you out pretty fast.

That thing is a beast, it must be a handful to use. I've used a 12 foot Stihl and it was almost more than I could handle. Nice job.👍👍👍 Good to see Ginger back to her old self, she's a keeper.
It is. It's not too bad once it's up in the air and cutting but moving it around is a chore.
Yeah, she's chipper and bouncing around like normal.
This is exactly the idea I need to deal with a single branch left atop a tall pine that the power company didn't trim after cutting the canopy off behind my property. Looks rediculous right now, after trimming that last branch it will just be a strong, tall pine tree trunk that would make Sigmund Freud blush.
The power company can really chop up a tree good.

This was very clever and gave me some ideas.
i have that exact setup and a couple parts trimmers, I'm doing this. I have a big pine that split and this would be perfect for witling it down to a more manageable size.

Nice work! I'm surprised you don't need a more powerful engine to drive the tool at the end of such a long series of springs, but it clearly works. Very cool.
I really wasn't sure if I would work at this distance. It doesn't seem to mind spinning the 17-ft long drive shaft in there. Overall I think it's probably 10% weaker than it was when it was really short.
I bought a pole saw like this and had so much fun my tree is gone, but that is one fun tool for some reason.
I found myself over the years looking for reasons to use it.
When I see a video posted by youtubers I often say " Oh Good",.
When I see you posted something I say " What is he up to now?" "This I've gotta see!"

Great idea and function. That might not be heavy but unless you are in your physical condition, it will turn into a hard task after a few minutes. All those hours laying on your back working on vehicles helps a lot.
Great point! It does beat you up after 15-20minutes of use.
Thanks for the great ideas. Our Stihl long-shaft gas-powered tree trimmer is awfully heavy. My wife and I have to use it together. They sell a harness to help support it, but it's so expensive I can't really justify buying one. The trimmer was also not inexpensive, but it does work well. I just got a 45° angle adapter for it which will make it easier to use for topping trees.
Don't waste your money on the harness
Can't go wrong with a Stihl. I have a shoulder harness for mine and find it gets in the way more than helping. Consequently I don't use it.

I bought a stihl long pruner chainsaw. very first thing I did, was fail to get away fast enough and bent the shaft when the limb fell on it.
Dang! Stihl parts are expensive to boot. I'm not sure why Stihl doesn't make one that's super long.
Love your work ,vary zoomed in on your extended chain trimmer. My legs start doing Elvis when I get too high.👍👍👌.guess I need to collect some moore trimmers,lol!
There are extensions sold by the major manufacturers for split boom systems (but you're only supposed to use one, not several) Of course scavenging parts is free and buying extensions would add up. Professional collapsible telescoping pole saws also exist. And there are extensions for those too. But again that's money to buy a pro tool and they aren't cheap.

Great job, your my kinda neighbor. If you could get a cord up a little higher in tree and use it to hoist tip of saw like a crane and support saw while cutting, might be less load on your arms and back. I like it👍

They are fine for already broken up soil but kind of just fluff it more than till it. I think the main issue is there is no way to properly hold it while using it.

I second that. My last tree trim was a few years ago when I was 60+. The branch I was on snapped and dropped me about 16 feet with a live chainsaw. The landing was an almost perfect PLF with no damage except to my ego.
nice i did the same thing. Its not nearly as long as yours I keep it together hung up on the ceiling in the shed. though i do have the extra sections just incase

Do you notice much power loss when going that long? Kind of like loss of torque when using multiple extensions with ratchets.
I really thought I would notice a big power drop, but I really don't. Maybe 10% so nothing that really affects performance.

I suspect you could use a belt/harness with a cup to rest, on this with the powerhead an offset, the shaft so the weight was on your hips and you had a pivot point. Like how they carry flags in parade. An open cup would allow you to get rid of the saw quickly if you needed to run

Have you thought about doing the same thing with the electric pole saws? They only extend to about 10 feet but would be really nice if you could get them to 15 or 20 feet for the branches up higher. Just an idea for you. Thank you.

Possibly. At 20lbs it's not too bad when you have a vertical and resting on your hip. It starts getting hard though if you have to hold it out where your arms are horizontal or higher. You can only do that for a few minutes before it just starts burning your muscles.

makes me want to extend my chord trimmer some :) I have a couple junker trimmers. They get gunked up if people don't know about ethanol and such I figure, and aren't too expensive either

I wonder if 2 people would make that easier to handle? 2nd person would have a 12' pole that attachees midway to your pole to help support the weight and guide it?
The hardest part about that is finding a second person. My wife said she gave up trying to help me do stupid things.
I had that exact same tree in my front yard, it was just falling apart like yours. I paid a tree company $800 to cut it down. That was 14 years ago.
Last couple of years it's been over burdening itself with seed pods and breaking limbs. It's growing too much from the abundance of water it takes from the lawn.
Very clever assembly. I unfortunately paid full freight for a SHORTER Husqvarna.
I'm not sure why Husqvarna or Stihl don't make a super long one. I'd happily pay for it from a good brand like them.

@@sixtyfiveford My 4 stroke weedeater has a sling which helps a lot. Im sure you can rig one up.
My old PPT Echo is 12 feet, and I have a 5 foot extension for it, so that is 17 feet + half my height is 20 feet. Just thought you should be aware.

You could even milk it a little bit more if you strapped on some drywall stilts.

How bout making a trolling motor attachment for a canoe or small row boat using a power head? Steve's Small Engine Saloon has a vid about a vintage trolling outboard that looks a lot like a trimmer. I have a card with a phone number for a team of Amigos for stuff like this. Everything else I have a Fred Marvin setup and a Workz corded saw that'll fit it with a foot switch. I got the wife a 4 inch Stihl battery trimmer. Now for the leaves. Sic 'em, Ginger! GBWYall!
Sometimes it's a lot smarter idea to have the amigos handle jobs like this.

A super long pole saw can save a lot of money, Instead of calling a tree service, can cut high branches yourself. And no climbing rickety ladders.

@@sixtyfiveford No, mine is about 14 feet. And I have to keep it fully assembled all the time and it is a lot bulkier than yours. Mine needs some finesse to work it, after it cuts through or comes off a branch I let the pole slip through my hands to get to the balance point. Otherwise it would crash to the ground, all the weight is on the top :-)
This is why the emergency room is a.ways open .no eye protection no helmet no gloves. No sense ?
