    It’s so refreshing to hear from someone else working to study so many languages instead of putting strict limits on themselves or insisting it’s “impossible” to study multiple languages at once. It certainly is possible and your priority system is a practical way to make it work.

    You're one of the few people who set attainable goals.. you are down to earth. Your videos are motivational:)
    Language learning is my best hobby!
    And it definitely helped me get a job that I wanted. I'm happy that it paid off. I will continue my journey with Language learning

    I like your goals and your result of 2022, for me I start learning English and Turkish in Sept 2022
    Now I have B1 in English and a still beginner in Turkish
    Mes goals for 2022 were:
    Read 2 books in English ( I read 1)

    Be able to understand fluent people ( I can )
    Turkish:
    Finished A1-2 Istanbul textbook (I finished just 3 unite from A1)
    Watching a series with subtitle (I watched eşkiya dünyaya hükümdar olamaz 3 seasons and I understand with Arabic subtitle and without I'm very happy for this)
    2023:
    English : speak 30 min /day for a month
    Turkish : same Goals of 22

    love your transparency with how you met/didn't feel you met your goals! Great organization tool to set low/medium/high priority languages, especially with multiple languages it's a lot to keep up with. Your passion really shines through, and I'm happy to hear you improved your turkish! It will be lower priority for me this year but arabic and russian are my focus! Yeni yılınız kutlu olsun!

    My japanese goals are reaching 20.000 cards on anki and 2.000 hours in 2023
    I currently have 11.000 cards on anki and 115 hours since the beginning of the year, which in 17 days so far of the year it's 6.7 hours on average, but overall the goal is if I'm not doing something in japanese I'd be studying for college, no more English

    I like the video game idea. I played horizon forbidden west in German for a few days but got lost and switched back to English. Need to replay it completely

      It's funny you mention that because I was going to do Horizon Zero Dawn in German for my goal, but I think Pokemon Brilliant Diamond is more fitting for my German level. I wish you the best in your replay 🎮

    My second question is how to maintain all the languages we know. Like multiple languages, especially someone like you who knows what, 8 to 10. It isn't practical to study them all every day. So how do you go about maintaining and if you learn a new language how do you ensure you don't lose track of the ones you already know more of?

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good question. I recently wrote a blog about this exact question: studywithalex.com/2023/01/12/can-you-learn-multiple-languages-at-once/1341/
      Hopefully, that can answer your question.

    Hello friend :) I would like your advice on 2 things whenever you get a chance:) one is, what has your experience with russian been like. I like the sound and,, in general this language I like it...but omg the grammar terrifies me! How can we learn to stop fearing languages with hard grammar?

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  ปีที่แล้ว

      For a native speaker of English, it's tough. You will need to do a lot of practice for that grammar to come naturally to you. I hope you can look past the difficulty and see the amazing expressiveness of Russian!

    My goal this year is to write in Ukrainian every day! Most of it will be example sentences rather than a diary since I am a beginner, but Ive heard writing something down can help you remember. I'm also hoping to add more small goals later in the year because I think staggering them out will help keep me from getting too discouraged if I cant meet them.

      Hey, how are you doing?
      It's been eight months now. I was wondering how your process is going?:)

  • @sheeliekittie9298
    @sheeliekittie9298 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    PS Alex, how did/do you feel about Italian? I know you had studied it this past year, did you feel it was too similar to the Romance languages you already know? That happens often with me, easy to confuse! I think to keep languages of the same family separate, that alone is a talent ;-)
    And, would you ever consider learning Hindi or Urdu? I think surely you'll pick it up in no time =)

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, the extent of my Italian studies was what you saw in the video I made in that video. Italian was similar, and I think that was a strength. I was able to predict structures and key grammar. What remains is just a matter of learning new orthography, new vocab patterns (like -zione where I learned -tion from French), and new articles. I definitely want to revisit Italian someday.
      I definitely want to learn Hindi or Urdu! I have no knowledge about South Asian languages and that whole Sprachbund even though so much culture, movies, music come from there. Definitely will someday, but not likely in 2023.

    • @sheeliekittie9298
      @sheeliekittie9298 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@studywithalex :) aw, well if you change your mind to try and start it THIS year, I can help you. the cool thing is, its kind of like 2 for one because urdu and hindi i'm sure you know, are essentially mutual intelligible, the scripts are different but you could easily learn them!

  • @Gikkeoi
    @Gikkeoi ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Shouldn’t you focus on one until you feel good enough to talk naturally with locals and then move on to the next one? I really don’t see trying to learn all of them at once being efficient

    • @Gikkeoi
      @Gikkeoi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But you do you, it seems that it is working for you

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a question that deserves a full video.
      Simplified version: I love the process, and efficiency is not my priority. I enjoy struggling through a language and that in and of itself is fun for me.
      On top of that "good enough to talk naturally" is totally subjective and you can move the goal posts.
