As the iPad picks up more and more marketshare, Apple seems to be neglecting the Mac on the low-end. Even the Mac mini which used to be the "budget-conscience" Mac starts at just under $1,000. The new MacBook Air is insanely expensive at $1,099 and with dismal entry-level specs (like a 128GB SSD and Y-Series processor), a hackintosh laptop seems like the best way to go. Just like the hackintosh desktop builds we have done in the past, this one works great. Perfectly! And we're really excited to show it to you. It's a MacBook Air KILLER at just $279.

Don't get me wrong, this is a decent laptop for the price and much better than a Chromebook. But it's no Macbook Air killer.

for that price you just want to experience the mac ecosystem and it really kills that bird with no problems. You can check out other hackintosh laptop with higher price and will have better power and be cheaper than macbook air but then you might argue why spend so much on a hackintosh. the fact that it is faster than macbook air 2018 is good enough for a student who has learnt on macs but can't afford them at home.

YES I’m glad this is becoming more popular! With apple making their own in house chips soon we should probably enjoy it while it lasts.
Even if they release ARM Chip Macbooks we would still have a lot of years that we will be able to use Intel HackBooks. Just looking at all the Hardware they released just recently based on Intel, they will have to give support for all these users for quite a while...
Also iirc one of the top developers of the hackintosh community mentioned to Louis Rossmann that at least the T2 chip can be emulated already, so maybe a few of the top minds will be able to figure out a translation layer or something more elegant. Not all hope is lost, but we should be cautious.

Apple switching to ARM shouldnt worry us because these chips will be implemented first in their lower-end computers, while the more powerful machines (Mac Pro, iMac Pro and some MacBook Pros and iMacs) will still use Intel based chips for at least 5-10 years. You also need to consider Apple generally keeps their systems updated for 5-7 years, meaning macOS will still support Intel for at least 15 years. What scares me is something like the T2 chip. Once all the macs Apple is supporting also have the T2 chip (about 5 years) they can use it to verify the hardware you're running is in fact by Apple. People may be able to circumvent this, but it would be very difficult.
Don't you worry. Hackers & modders do exist. In any position, if apple tries to sue anyone they'll nail their own foot, they know it very well too.

I bought this laptop a couple months ago for 200 and upgraded to 8gbs of ram and a 240gb ssd. I also installed Ubuntu and it’s been working great since.

I just bought last week a Lenovo 330s-14ikb (the 14" version) for 300$ and it's got a better 1080p IPS display, same i3 proc, 4gb ram which I upgraded to 8gb and a 512gb SSD, ohh and it also has a illuminated keyboard, will be trying to hackintosh it, great video!

Best is if you can install in seperate disks/ssd.

Meditation with Cats I know the 1st Gen x1 carbon is fully compatible. The x131e core i3 version is also compatible. I was using my x131e untill the hdd it came with failed and I bought it used with a bios lock so I couldn't boot from USB to reinstall an OS.

Lenovo laptops have been used as substitute of MacBook for years now. It's good that you are showing your audience an cheaper alternative to Mac that works and "feels" almost like the real thing.
But what if I want a little more power, let's say I want to render my TH-cam videos. The laptop feature here has a puny i3. My suggestion, to anyone reading this is to check out older better Lenovo laptops like the t440p. Completely upgradable up to a quad-core with hyperthreading, 16gbs of Ram, 2 accessable 2.5 inch SSD/HDD bays + 2242 m.2 sata expansion slot and the ability to get 1080p resolution on the screen. All those upgrades will round up to about 400-500 and you can install Mac os with the same issues as well (no sd slot support and wireless card needs to be replaced).

I bought a mid 2012 MacBook Pro on eBay for $240 and upgraded it to 16gb of ram and a 500gb SSD for around $120. Definitely still a good option imo

Thinkpad Yoga! I paid 150 quid and bam, a full i5, 8gig, 1080p IPS 2in1 with pen that gives the iPads a run for their money, specially since there's actual desktop programs too! No keyboard case or pencil holder required! I'm a windows guy but I assume Hackintosh support is up there since its a thinkpad!

Thinkpad T440p with full upgrades is the best option, FHD i74980HQ 16GB of ram, iris graphics is possible for this price.

This is the way to go but every time I use older hardware I get lambasted cause it's hard to find in their country, etc. Went for the cheapest laptop with decent specs that could be found in most countries.

I'd rather take a more expensive 330s with an 8th gen i5 and 1080p ips panel.
I have that notebook and runs flawlessly on windows. No reason to switch to macos since I even program for android and school programs are all on windows.

Haha, this was a funny video. I'd say that this could be a viable option if half the Macbook experience wasn't the screen quality, color accuracy, amazing battery life and the trackpad. Hell, I really like the latest iteration of the keyboard found in the Macbook Air 2019 and the MBP 16". I found really amazing that this CPU outperforms the one inside the Macbook Air, being a i5 and all!
Nice video even if the actual price is higher especially after adding RAM and the new WiFi. Lenovo also blocks non-authorized WiFi cards in some of their laptops in BIOS but apparently not this one. You can’t be too hard on the screen as the 2014 13 inch MacBook Air had this same screen resolution but it was at least IPS. It would be ideal to have a laptop with a 2.5 inch drive bay and NVME slot to make dual booting easier with one OS on each drive.
You can put in a single 16gb RAM in the extra slot in this machine to have a max of 20GB of RAM.

FYI as of today 9/11 (prob sale ends Saturday) $279 sale price back on! I got an open box for $239.
Just want to add a mention that these laptop lines from Lenovo (the Ideapads 330S and s340) are an amazing budget machines just in general and they're nearely endlessly configurable, so you can find some real gems out there. They also have a great 14 inch versions of these, some again in a pretty killer configs if you search around. Might be able to find some better configs with stuff like solid FHD IPS displays(and matte at that!) for not much more than this absolutely basic model.
Also, the fact that there are endless configurations with everything from AMD APUs to intel i5s and i7s with dedicated MX150/250 GPUs, HDDs and SSDs is also why there is such a huge amount of unused space just like Snazzy mentions. They use the same chassis for all of these so the most threadbare config will have a tiny batter and an nearly empty laptop body.
To be fair bought a MacBook Air today. Got a pair of beats with my student discount to get rid off on eBay and by the time I get rid off my old Mac from 5 years ago it'll be about 650-700 pounds. For that price it's really hard to find a laptop that is designed so well! That and Apple are one of the rare companies that offer QHD as standard which in my opinion if you are doing a lot of word processing on a laptop is almost a must. It's a reason that you see so many students and professionals walking around with them sharp text on a screen is just nice.
I would suggest getting a cheap refurbished Thinkpad instead of buying a new low end laptop. You’ll get more for your money.

I like the fun of picking an old machine and showing all the potential hidden there, this is probably bigger than with a new hw, however I live in Brazil and very often hw available in U.S. is hard to get here, even buying in ebay with transport and taxes the value gets much higher, lenovo produces this machine here, and the price is very low. My point Snazzy will create more impact outside U.S. with a more replicable experience, in this case lenovo is more interesting, and by the way, few dais ago I bought the younger brother of ideapad 300 the S145 to be my first hacintosh, is not working yeah, and I'm having fun and learning a lot....

After being in the Apple environment I finally went with a Lenovo W520 (Quad core i7) for 150$ on ebay and maxed out every thing: 32GB DDR3 Ram/ 500 GB SSD/ 500GB Second HDD/ fresh windows 10 installed and the results were amazing!! I’m running and doing heavy works with Solidworks/ANSYS/Mathlab/Autocad/Office with no problem!!! I saved a lot of cash...

That Lenovo would be top-of-the-range here in Australia.
I have the version of this model which costs almost equivalent to a base Macbook Air, and it literally uses the same base motherboard, only with way better CPU (i5 8250u), that extra ram slot filled with a 4GB SODIMM, that nVME slot already occupied and a proper HDD in the SATA slot (I ended up changing both the SATA and nVME drives for 500GB Crucial SSDs as SSD prices dropped). Also the same GPU slot is populated with a Radeon GPU, which actually makes the battery life almost same to that of this laptop, unless you disable it in Bios, which maked the battery life double (5-7 hours depending on workload, I would consider that good enough). Also it has a 1080p IPS Panel which is very good for watching movies because of excellent colour and decent brightness. Hackintosh on this is actually very similar to an Macbook Air, or even a 13 inch pro because that 8250u CPU is actually a good enough laptop CPU for most uses. I'm still using this for basic tasks, and works great. Recently updated to Sonoma.
Edit: It also ships with a 720p decent webcam, and the SD Card Reader doesnt work even on this version

Have you tried the complete virtualized (through Arch Linux) method that demonstrated how to get MacOS working on ANY system (without lag) by Linus Tech Tips (they got it working on a Ryzen 7 chip even)?

Michael Timpson I did, though I question if you did. It's literally a VM with a passthrough GPU and SMBIOS. Straight hackintosh is far better and always will be.
You can hackintosh builds with AMD CPUs as well.

I am quite happy with my Lenovo i7 laptop I bought refurbished from Lenovo. 8 GB Ram 1TB combo SSD HDD. Came with Windows 8/now Windows 10. I got it for about $600. I run PreSonus Studio One. Boots in less than 10 sec. Run my Behringer X18 Air X touch, and recently got an older US1641 Tascam USB2.0 to work fine on it.
i bought a used macbook pro on ebay for 250 USD that had a 3rd gen i5, 256 GB samsung SSD, 8 GB ram, and a GT 330M. if you also want to do some light gaming on your macbook, I would reccomend going online and looking for a similar system.

This laptop is actuslly great if you upgrade it, 8gb ram and 512gb ssd total will cost you about 70$. Plus a 50$ screen, pretty great for students. Only dealbreaker for me is the battery

Some last-gen XPS have proven to be rather reliable.
Actually, the display is not that bad. It doesnt get extremely bright, but I thought that the viewing angles were quite ok. Regarding performance, there is a model available of the same laptop that has MX150 graphics and an i5 with 8gigs of ram , 1tb of hard storage and a 256 gig ssd, all in all, it costs around 550-600 bucks. This is the most compatible Mac os machine in that spectrum as most others have soldered components

I used to work at Best Buy. For about $100 more you could get a similar model with an i5, 8GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. And it has a silver case and black bezel around the 1080p (yes, FHD) screen so it looks more like a MacBook. Actually a good laptop for the price range if you need decent performance but don't care about premium features.

Lenovo Ideapad 330S is the best non-Apple notebook I ever used. We have one at home. The built quality is outstanding, and it's blazing fast using either Windows, macOS or Linux.

Why am I tempted by this... I'm a long-time Windows user and I will continue using Windows for gaming and stuff, but Apple software is something that appeals to me. I'm just not a fan of the rather overpriced Apple hardware, and their approach to processor cooling (nah).
Thanks for the video! I have this same laptop and I hate it soooo much! Slow, bloated, and weak. I only use it occasionally to print on my non-AirPrint printer, maybe 10 times in the last six months. Now it won’t charge! I see others have the same problem. I’m glad you were able to fix yours the way you want it. I have this laptop but with a full hd screen, an i5, a radeon 540 and 12 gigs of ram. I love it, it works extremely well and I can even do my gaming on it (I don't play the most recent games, but I play some gta online and some others and it can do stable 40-50 fps in gta with native resolution)

No, not at all. You get a much better display, bigger battery and a much more stable chassis. Honestly, the hardware quality of Macs is actually pretty great. There is no comparison to the aluminum bodies when talking about a budget laptop like this Lenovo.

I just hackintoshed a $160 Lenovo ThinkPad T440s and that is now my daily driver. I used the OpenCore bootloader btw.

next up: getting a used thinkpad, upgrading it for a total of ~600$ and hackintoshing it!
upgrading display , keyboard , ram , cpu , storage , you'll be at a nice price then and thinkpads are the excellent machines for hackintoshing

What about a Lenovo Y520? (It’s the older equivalent of the Y540)
@@mihnealazar7039 its not old and yes it can run macOS and if you are planning to use gtx 1050 then you have to install macOS high sierra since macOS mojave have no support for nvidia graphics whatsoever but with intel gpu you can macOS latest model for upcoming 4-5 years on this laptop.
Hackintosh Builder thanks a lot. I’ve never done this before, so I will ask: can I have both windows and MacOS on the laptop? And will it affect my files? (I guess these are kind of noob questions, but I’m a noob in terms of hackintosh).

As a guy that's been building hackintoshes for almost a decade I'm not sure I take this over my might as well be new 2014 MBA..I mean if I want real processing power I'll go to my MacPro or my hack and the MBA gets phenomenal battery life for just about the same money.
This is an outstanding Hackintosh build! Thank you so much Quinn, this is really a worthwhile investment! I'd love to see you build a video editing Hackintosh rig that would rival the Mac Pro. One that focuses more on 1. price-performance ratio 2. ease to build and setup.
Bruhhhhh my pc is from ancient times oh my god it has an Intel core duo and 2gb of ram and running Windows 7 and barely working like my phone is more powerful than it

I thought the same thing. That resolution was poor even in 2014, and now, 5 years later there still are some laptops which have awful screens. That laptop with 768p screen isn't worth 100$. My parents have Dell Inspiron 5557 with 768p screen. It is not a device to work, not to web surfing and not even for kids' stupid games.

Looks like the similar Laptop to my Lenovo Ideapad 3 with the Ryzen 4600U CPU and Ryzen Graphics. I put in the extra 16GB Module bringing the RAM to 20GB. (I think that is max) I added a 500GB M.2 SSD and left the 1TB Spindle drive. I cloned the 1TB drive to the M.2 drive and formatted the 1TB Spindle drive. So the M.3 drive is the boot drive and the 1TB Spindle is just a data drive. I paid like 350 for the Ideapad 3 with the Ryzen 5 4600U and it's pretty zippy.
what you're really after is the Lenovo - 330S-15ARR. it is basically the same thing but with ryzen 5 apu that has solid vega graphics, and the screen is an amazing 1080p panel. I got mine for 302$ used on amazon.

The solution is simple --> Lenovo 330s i3 7020U with FHD (1920x1080) IPS (~300€ ...great machine)
I have added +4GB ram (now has Total 8Gb's) and +120GB NVME ..and this thing flies..!! (Total price ~380€)
Windows not Linux
Video editing takes too long though (..has only 2cores) ..not for Gaming
