I must say, you telling these stories is far more compelling then most any other source of Civil War events. Ken Burns had a team of people to produce a series. You are the modern voice of these long dead warriors going about their business.
Gains Mill was a very bloody battle that’s not talked about enough. I believe some of the same ground was later part of the Cold Harbor blood bath. I enjoy listening to these stories almost every day, thank you, Ed from Lynchburg
Had a direct ancestor wounded at cold harbor. Spent the rest of the war as a convalescent hospital steward. Lived a long life locally. Died in the thirties.

Countless walks up the now quiet slopes of Gaines Mill solidified this (where Hood and his Texans were no slouch by the way…) And let’s not forget July 2 of 1863 :) Many thanks again for all your efforts for the rest of us.
It always amazes me, and in a way, saddens as well, how well-spoken & generally eloquent, people were not that long ago. Here in the South, language has mostly been reduced to mainly utilitarian purposes. Just so many syllables to get the general idea across.
when you have your infrastructure destroyed, and "enemy" carpetbaggers running things after the war for years, education is only one among many things that suffered. And also remember this, These quotes and writings are from the upper crust of Southern society. Your common poor Southerner, wasn't as educated as they were. That doesn't mean ignorant or unschooled completely, just their language would be more that of the common man, rather than the highly educated officers class, and reporters, historians, etc. My Grandmother who was born in 1895, told me that they graduated school after the 8th grade, and could teach school. ( Northern Alabama/ Mississippi border region ) She never even saw a car until she was married and had her first child, 21yrs old. It was a hardscrabble life, still horse and buggy times, and they still had many people who had been alive during the war to speak to, and learn from. My family had several members who were confederates. A great book for the views of the common soldier, is Co Aytch by Sam Watkins, 1st Tenn Inf. Regt.
I really like this channel. Law never forgave Longstreet for (some say petulantly) refusing to consult Lee when conditions at Cemetery Hill were not as Lee thought. So Longstreet ordered an en echelon attack up Emmitsburg Road which was crazy. Law did drift to the right without orders to try and turn the Round Tops and that was the end of Law’s career in the East. Had he strictly followed orders he would have been marching into Sickles’ prepared position all the while taking fire in the back. Yes Mac was an engineer. But so was Lee.
It was the 4th Texas which broke the line. Hood spotted an area to his right which was free from Union infantry and he took the 4th up. The flag barrier ran ahead of the regiment all the way to the top. The 5th, to their left, I think was close behind and actually hit the Union flank, driving them up the hill. One of the regiments captured some artillery. The 5th, upon reaching the top, rested until they were fired on from behind. The turned and fired into a New Jersey regiment and captured the regiment including their band. Upton had no rank on his coat so the Union commander did not want to give him his sword. Finally, he gave his sword to Upton who rested it in the bend of his left elbow because he did not want to let go of his frying pan. Laws Brigade never really supported the Texas Brigade well during the war. At Peters-burg / Richmond, the Texans would fight through 3 lines of Yanks and then have to fight their way back to Law
Interesting that Hood left contemporaneous reports and Law didn't. During my military time we were constantly berated to submit after-action reports, it was many years before I found that those reports were widely read.

Takes a lot of guts to walk into a line of entrenched muskets firing away in your face. To the union troops, they probably seemed unstoppable.
