    Hard to imagine the psychological impact treating all the wounded of the Wilderness…
    Those CSA prisoners of the Mule Shoe had seen more than enough of the elephant(s) of war… yet despite it all the debates of politics held firm.
    Fascinating times indeed.
    As to the photo- is AJB wearing a glove?
    Thanks as always

    The eloquence of the words and writings of the men and soldiers of that time is always astounding to me. North and south alike. Almost sounds like poetry the way they wrote and spoke. Learned and stern and forthright. And in almost every case, true. They wrote what they saw, thought, and felt because it impacted them that much. Even decades later they would recount the events as if they had just happened. Something that large couldn’t have affected them in any other way I would imagine. How could they forget? Amazing. Thank you for your work. These videos are the delight of my lunch break. I look forward to more from you and this channel. Thanks again. Back to the heat.

      They wrote that way because their minds had not been rotted by idiotic television shows, ridiculous video games, endless online drivel, and a hundred other "advances" of today's world. Also I suspect their education (and their respect for their teachers and other elders) far surpassed anything to be found today.

    Hi, Ron, This was yet another very interesting video. Thank you for taking the time to produce it!
    I was under the impression that Confederate used a tiered officer rank system. In this particular case, colonels wore three stars on their collars while general officers wore three stars surrounded by a wreath. (The confederates general officer insignia did not differentiate between the five general officer ranks.). We all know General Lee wore a colonels uniform most of the time. How would the sanitary commission fellow know the confederate was a general, let alone a brigadier general, since they were the same?
    I am just quibbling but these possible inconsistencies seem to catch my attention.
    As always, keep up the great work!!!
    Karl

    • @lifeonthecivilwarresearchtrail
      @lifeonthecivilwarresearchtrail  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, the collar insignia for colonels and brigadiers is exactly as you describe. Bloor writes how it was hard to tell who was an officer and who was not, but that some prisoners had turned their collars to reveal their rank. Bloor does not mention how he became aware of them. It is easy to imagine that word traveled by mouth that captured generals were part of the larger group. It is also easy to imagine they were maybe treated differently due to their high rank, which drew attention to them.

    It is interesting that the relationship between prisoners and those that captured them of the Civil War were pretty cordial! The caputers did not abuse their prisoners initually when they were first captured in any way and the prisoners could even have political arguments with their captures without fear of being hurt! This is unlike many other wars where prisoners were abused and prisoners were terrified to even open their mouths to their captures for fear of being punished or worse! I know that once prisoners were placed in the actual prisons conditions were very bad for prisoners within the actual prison!

    Black soldiers were not " murdered " at Fort Pillow. They were battle casualties . You can not fire your gun, throw up your hands and shout I give up , then run and pick up another gun and fire it at your opponent possibly killing some of them etc etc etc and claim that you were shot after surrendering. Also , when you commit numerous atrocities against the surrounding citizens and steal all their clothing and livestock so they can not survive the brutal winter you engender animosity that down not help things.

I think all but one stayed with him after the war!!!! And yes he did join the kkk in the beginning because there was no law of the land after the war but became disenfranchised with them after he seen what they were doing !!!! Just one more exmaple of lost cause fiction. Forrest was careful in the way he characterized these men. They were not at any time referred to as soldiers. Forrest was paid by the Confederate government for the slaves that rode with him. These black men were impressed enslaved men forced into the CSA army, as property, hired out by Forrest to the confederacy Their legal status never changed from enslaved men to free men during the course of the War of the Rebellion..

      @jimmyanderson2988 Spreading more B/S are you? Where did you get this information can you cite a reference? Sounds like 42 men with no job prospects and maybe in fear of their lives and families surrounded NBF. What or who was he afraid of? Why did he need bodyguards? Did he even pay them? When you heard this story, did logic suggest that there may be more to it than just face value? Or was this merely something that sounded good and went with what you'd like to hear? This man was the biggest thief of the Civil War, a raider who came out of the war 10 times richer than he went in all made in TN and MS. Bragg fired him for acting like "Angel Eyes" from the movie and not doing his true job - recon, but Jeff Davis brought him back as a Corps Commander for the money. Please cite your reference so I may research - Thanks

    As far as I know, there is nothing in the Constitution about the right to secede. It is simply assumed by the party that wants to do so. So I guess we just fight it out, as we did with Great Britain, and as the Confederacy did with the United States.... and see who wins.

      “As far as I know-“ First, I’m not telling. The Constitution isn’t that long. I suggest that reading it might be in order. One thing that amuses me through the years are the number of rights some people assume are somehow included in the Constitution. I think it’s well over a thousand, and the number increases daily.
      “-and see who wins.” As with 1865, where it’s hard to say who won the war, my estimate would be “nobody.”

    • @historyandhorseplaying7374

      @mencken8 well the way our system is set up, the constitution does not "list rights". It simply lists specific things the government may NOT do. The theory is, if something is not specifically listed in the Constitition, the government may not do it, or it's up to the states.

    charlesbelser7249 I must disagree with your questionable claim that black soldiers were not murdered. First, Nathan Bedford Forest is notorious as founder of the Ku Klux Klan. I believe he also owned slaves. To him blacks were just property. Your alleged description of what happened to these soldiers appears to denigrate their performance on the battlefield.

      he offered the officer at Fort Pillow to surrender , the commander didn't was killed and 2nd in command faked a second truce when forrest again gave him 30 mins to surrender ! Now it fact Forrest had captured both white Tennessee union troops and even black union troopers and sent them to Prisoner of war camp ! The first and 2nd commander at FT pillow should had surrender ! Period !

      you know Forrest told US Congress that he had 40 slaves he took with him to war and called them the finest men that served him , they saved his life 3 times ! 2x at FT pillow and once at battle Selma and after the war 31 went to work for him after war !
      When I entered the army I took forty-seven Negroes into the army with me, and forty-five of them were surrendered with me. I said to them at the start: ‘This fight is against slavery; if we lose it, you will be made free; if we whip in the fight, and if you stay with me and be good boys, I will set you free. In either case you will be free. Those boys stayed with me, drove my teams, and better confederates did not live.
      and you should read on his speech he gave at On July 5, 1875, Forrest gave a speech before the Independent Order of Pole-Bearers Association ( that was Pre- NAACP).

    • @jimrichardson3078
      @jimrichardson3078 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jimmyanderson2988 You mentioned several points with what seems to be much emotion but no facts. I would like to compare some of your points with actual facts. This war was inevitable from the country's concept because all settled for a disagreement on slavery and way of life. Secession had been discussed or threatened back when Pres. Zachary Taylor wouldn't allow California to enter the union as a slave state. Taylor threatened to hang them if they even tried beginning with his son-in-law Jeff Davis.
      First, you cite Elon Musk as SME on slaves and yes it seems most, if not all, peoples were slaves at one time or another but I think you could have found a better reference for your point. Because, though so many peoples have been enslaved, NONE were ever enslaved by folks that called themselves CHRISTIANS. By teachings, Christians aren't allowed to have slaves or treat others as less than themselves, This slavery practice breaks all tenets of the Christian faith. Jesus Christ teaches that we are all the same thus the church had to find some way to declare peoples as "enemies of Christ" and therefore could be held into perpetuity, and this was all done for money, which is one of the reasons catholicism and individual popes became so wealthy. There were clergy on every ship to the New World to keep account of the pope's share of the booty. So usually when people complained about slavery it was due to reasons of immorality and not love for the slaves. The adage goes: "the church went to the people with only the bible and said close your eyes and let us pray, when the people opened their eyes the church had their land and the people only had the bible."
      Secondly, the USA is sovereign over all its' territories EXCEPT the original 13 states. This means that when the other states seceded, those states ( i.e. Alabama Territory, Florida Territory, etc.) reverted back to the original territories, the jurisdiction of the US Marshall Service and always the property of the people of the USA . Those southern people either willingly or though trickery were bamboozled by their southern lords into giving up their US citizenship, state's right and property rights. Imagine Bill Gates buys Montana and declares it his own separate country? It don't work like that. Therefore FL, AL, MS, TN. LA, AR and TX CANNOT just take US land and become another country, the main issue of the war was that the CSA was stealing US land and slavery was just an incidental consequence. Those folks (former citizens) who's answer was "cause y’all down here !!!!" had no rights (land or otherwise) through their own actions or lack of actions and were trying to steal US land just as Texas had done to Mexico not even a generation prior.
      So do your own research to get the facts and not rely on flippant comments made by some arrogant someone with their own agenda
