      I belonged to a radio club in college and used to play mostly late 60s psychedelia, obscure stuff, that probably hadn't been played on the radio in 50 years if ever. See Emily Play happened to be a song I did play. Lots of old people liked my show lol. Gave lots of backstory about album recordings and such as well, I miss it. Hope to get into radio more seriously one day.

      You'd have an FM rock station that would deign to play Emily or Arnold during a Psychedelic Supper evening show. Maybe Seven and Seven Is by Love if you were lucky. The aftermath of FM rock in the 80's.

    Sad that in a short year after this the wheels fell off the wagon.The album Saucerfull of Secrets, released in mid 1968, was the only album that all 5 members played on. RIP Syd. Thanks for setting the Pink Floyd Stage.

    Holy shit!! How can anyone say Syd wasn't performing well here?! 1:52 - 2:13 is proof of pure genius! I mean what was that even?!!? It was so spontaneous and just fucking perfect! Really bizarre and strange sounding too!

      +CosmicDayz Please see my recent entry on the subject above. I agree, he was playing well DESPITE the challenges imposed playing live in that period. He's a bit out of tune at 0:42 with the D chord on the Fender Esquire that he played, unless it was the Danelectro. In any case, as you might agree, it's good because it's close enough for R'n'R... as well as tripping hippies of that period! Peace.

    This sure is a rare treat! Nice "Glissando" by Syd!, on his Fender Telecaster, at 2:03 of the track and nice Farfisa Organ solo by my all-time favorite Rock Organist Rick Wright! It's been said, in biographies of The Pink Floyd, that Syd Barrett taught David Gilmour this most inventive technique of "Glissando", sliding a cigarette lighter down the guitar strings with the use of the Binson Echorec Echo Pedal, to give Cosmic Psychedelic sounds, but Gilmour has stated that he taught Syd this technique. Well, Syd Barrett first used "Glissando" during the introduction and during the solo to their biggest U.K. hit "See Emily Play."Syd also eployed the effect on Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Interstellar Overdrive and Remember A Day. You Pink Floyd fans can debate this topic but I personally believe Syd taught David Gilmour. In past interviews David Gilmour has described Syd Barrett's Guitar playing as very inventive. Could he have been referring to the "Glissando" technique?

    • @Alligator6002

      Syd was heavily influenced by Keith Rowe from the band AMM, it's been mentioned that he took a few tricks from him and filtered it through his own lenses.

    This absolutely sounds like Syd’s Floyd. June-August period found a general erosion in his playing, but with moments of his greatness shining through. Syd flubs the first break, but catches the mail solo fine. Very hard to imitate Syd’s slide technique. It’s him. Bass is typical Waters. Very insistent, dominant and a bit in front of the beat. Sonically sounds like a crap one or two mic capture. I’d be very surprised if this isn’t the genuine article.

      I'm not sure that your possession of a Ferrograph reel to reel machine has to do with it though, nice though that must be, and I do trust that you had one. I have a two-track Revox reel to reel. So, using your logic, cassettes, 8 track cartridges, DAT, CD's, and whatever else there is nowadays, don't exist. Trust me, I was there.

    Even with the bad recording, you can hear that Syd's beloved little mirrors festooned electric Esquire is probably out of tune a bit at 0:42 and since he was maybe having early issues with a precondition of the notorious "traveling to the dark side of the moon" in this period of the band while playing live, as well as antics offstage, plus throw in the usual R'n'R hectic touring insanity of that time, with the Star-Maker machinery smoking up this popular song like a banana peel and -->whoa!, no wonder Roger Waters sang later about "the American tour" and "....that you may find hard to get off!" [of the tour, itself, -->and NOT "getting off" from smoking banana peels! To all you stoners reading this!] Then again, they didn't have electronic portable guitar tuners in those days, either! Like we do now-- Oh well. Peace.

    • @shawntoh
      @shawntoh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shawntoh Note that Syd compensates nicely playing the slide parts in tune, though. That is the nice thing about playing slide. Jimi Hendrix didn't need no slide[sic], with his huge hands, he just bent the darn strings in tune! But he was J. Hendrix and we ain't and that's why they is great[sic]!

    • @shawntoh
      @shawntoh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shawntoh I note specifically it's the D chord that he's playing at 0:42 that's kind of iffy on the intonation, but it's close enough for R'n'R and especially tripping hippies! Peace and Love to you all! :)

      "We've had problems with our equipment and we can't get the P.A. to work because we play extremely loudly. It's a pity because Syd (singer Syd Barrett) writes great lyrics and nobody ever hears them.
      Maybe it's our fault because we are trying too hard. After all the human voice can't compete with Fender Telecasters and double drum kits. We're a very young group, not in age, but in experience. We're trying to solve problems that haven't existed before. Perhaps we should stop trying to do our singles on stage."

      This is a well known well documented pink floyd show. They played it. The fact that band members have said "Syd didn't want to play hits, Syd didn't want to be a pop star blah blah" means nothing. Those same band members said their main goal was to be a successful pop group.

    • @DarthLore00
      @DarthLore00 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      flipper barrett well of course every babd wants to become successful. What I heard in interviews was that they were open to play any song, except for See Emily Play. And i believe Syd did want to become famous, Richard Wright recalls him enjoying being well known in London and having fans. Syd probably thought that his first two hits Arnold Lane and See Emily Play were a little boring and too pop-y. But that's just an assumption of mine, I of course can't really know the 100% truth. But do you have any evidence of this "well documented" live show. Was it really Pink Floyd?

      You make good points. They did play See Emily on Top Of The Pops (actually pretended to play it ) so i guess they were open to performing it a couple times. As far as evidence of this show - this should be of interest. Enjoy! www.sydbarrettpinkfloyd.com/2010/12/pink-floyd-copenhagen-1967-recording.html

      actually some of the reviews in the article are hazy and they tend to confuse copehagen and stockholm shows but after all it was the sixties.

      flipper barrett Thanks for replying. It seems that they did play Emily but rarely. Thank you I've learned something new today!

    Of course this in not Syd Barrett. All you can do in 1967 is Mono Recording.

      What? They recorded their 1967 album in stereo! The beatles released all their albums from 66 on in stereo

    To me, and anyone with a cursory knowledge of PF, this is not PF. Listen to the TOTP version and then listen to this. This is amateurish at best. Sounds like some high school band doing a very bad imitation. The guy who posted this may believe this is PF but this is definitely not PF. I don't know what you people are thinking. Let the hating begin.

      +HIDEOUSLYOURS No hate - this is part of a legitimate radio broadcast well known in PF circles for years. Part of the reason this sounds amateurish compared to TOTP is because TOTP was mimed for the most part plus its well documented that they had good days and bad days during that short lived phase of the band.

      +doctor deLucia I believe I have the whole show up on the channel somewhere. As far as the vocals go - they don't improve much but there are knowledgeable people who have commented in detail just how primitive recording equipment was 50 years ago.

      +HIDEOUSLYOURS Knobhead. How do you know it's definitely not Pink Floyd? Did you see Pink Floyd playing live in 1967?
      If I played you the live tapes I made of Pink Floyd live in 1974 and 1975 you'd probably say they weren't Pink Floyd either and say they were some amateur band imitating them. Did you ever see any live gigs of major bands in the 70's? Have you heard live non-professionally made recordings from bands in the 60's or 70's? If so, you'll know they don't sound like the records, or when they were on TOTP. Knobhead. I don't know what you are thinking.

      Actually it's bad recording. Anyway post and pre Syd Pink Floyd are really different,but trying to love both of them is the best way. Also I adore both of them. but if we talk about originality this's the original Pink Floyd as well. Syd named and created the band. it evolved into different,amazing band and both of them are great. Shine on you))

    You could tell here that syd was not performing well, and pink Floyd was probably considering dropping him.

      His guitar playing wasn't bad, because of the broken PA we cant hear the vocals, so how can you tell he's playing bad?
