Ok as an Ivoirian I just feel honored that many countries now compare their cities to Abidjan. I pray that God allows us 🇨🇮to become a benchmark. I’ve never been to Nigeria. So I can’t compare . But I lived in Japan for 7 yrs and 4 in the UK but I feel very comfortable living in Abidjan. I pray that all african cities can develop well. I admire Nigerians business mindset. I take someone like Dangote as a great model and a true source of inspiration for the african youth.

    2 important corrections:
    1. Nigeria is no longer the largest economy in Africa, but the 4th after SA, Egypt and Algeria.
    2. Abidjan is not quietly rising in the ranks of development. Abidjan was always the most developed city in West Africa by far (and possibly in Africa outside the then apartheid enclaves) from 1960 to 1990. After its long term president (1960-93), Félix Houphouët-Boigny, died in 1993, the country began to unravel with coups and later a civil war, which obviously halted developments. So what you see now is the basic level of development up till 1990, and just superficial maintenance since then. Had the level of development continued on the same pace as the first 30 years, nowhere in West Africa will be close in ranking including our recent Abuja.
Like Nigeria in 1991, Ivory Coast also moved capital from Abidjan on the coast to Yamoussoukro in the North in 1983.
Incidentally, Ivory coast was an economy with Agriculture as its backbone. No oil money and the population is relatively small - 28 mil as at 2022.

Another 5 to 10 years of diligent fiscal policy ESPECIALLY Fiscal Federalism would pivot Nigeria to the top!

@@aframaco9491 ❤ Outstanding comment, without a doubt. I also agree that the ranking is neither here nor there. For instance we lost the ranking recently on account of our massive currency devaluation. Also, there is a trick to the valuation. For instance, we gained that title only when a world class economist familiar with the tricks of the ranking, NOI, rebased our economy by including previous ignored sectors, like the Nollywood.
Due to our large market, we've always have that potential, but we've not done much with it. Seems we are headed the way of Congo, the 2nd largest population in Africa.
To be honest, I personally don't think we are going to make a headway unless we crash the country. Too many dissimilar blocks we are trying to string together unsuccessful.
We should have crashed right after the Brits left. Every block, even the Hausas, will do better outside Nigeria than within it. There is no prize for being the largest Black country in the world, only to the embarrassment of the Black world, when we could be 10 different exemplary nations doing wonders.

Ivory coast was the most influential country in Africa from 1960 to 1980 approx, thanks to the president of the country, who served from 1960 until his death in 1993, Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
Just like Muritala Mohammed arbitrarily declared Abuja the new capital of Nigeria in Feb 4, 1976 (9 days before his assassination on Feb 13, 1976) to move it to the North, something Saudana has advocated since the First Republic, Félix Houphouët-Boigny also abitrarily moved capital to his birth place in 1983.

The entire Ivotry Coast is 28 mil, same population as Lagos State. However, ivory coast land size is 322,000 sq km, 100 times the size of Lagos State at 3,350 sq km.
Lagos State is suffering from Nigerian poor planning and corruption. A country of Nigerian size will have at least a dozen functioning ports, but the few ports Nigerian has are concentrated in Lagos. Although there are at least 3 other ports in the S/S, the FG does not allow them to be used optimally. As a result about 80% of the goods coming into Nigeria come in through Lagos, with overloaded trailers leaving from Lagos to other parts of the country, and destroying many roads in the process.
As I wrote during the Cotonou debate, the quality of life in all coastal West Africa surpass that of Nigeria. And it shows in our life expectancies. Life expectancy in every coastal West Africa is 60 and up, compared to Nigerian life expectancy of 54 (53.9), the 2nd lowest in Africa after Chad (53.7).

The aforementioned Asia countries are top tier and shouldn't be compared with any Africa country.
