Daria Reviews Dark Half [SNES] - NPCs: They're What's For DINNER! - Super Nintendo Review

  • Developed by Westone and published by Enix for the Super Famicom (Japanese SNES) in 1996, Dark Half was a horror themed strategy RPG that presented players with two simultaneous opposing storylines. That of Falco, a heroic paladin destined to face the recently-resurrected dark lord. And Rukyu, the NPC-munching dark lord himself.
Gameplay: Not your typical "Final Fantasy" type RPG! Dark Half is a challenging turn based tactical RPG for the Japanese Super Nintendo. Chapters alternate control between Falco, who fights with a band of controllable heroes and Ruyku who summons computer controlled monster allies. Dungeons are heavily puzzle based and the entire game has an element of resource management.

SNES drunk jajaa... I'll wait for your review just to get your opinion, before I start playing it! (as it's so time consuming to play RPG's). 😂

Great review! I'm glad you liked the translation/story. Gideon and I worked our butts off making sure everything was top-notch. And for the record, Rukyu's storyline is way better than Falco's. :D

Oh wow. I saw your name pop up in my notifications and was like "It can't be..." Anyway I'm glad you liked the video, but really I just wanted to say thank you for all the hours of entertainment you've provided me over the years. You (and Gideon) have made so many of my now favorite titles accessible to my lazy ass. Seriously, thank you.

You have a great review, after it I signed up for the channel. Thank you so much for adding subtitles. Your subtitles are better than if TH-cam made them based on audio. Thanks to the subtitles, using the translation function, I understand everything said. Greetings from Russia!

Because I write out a full script it's very easy for me to upload subtitles. I never know who is going to watch a video. And hello! (:

I found this gem randomly after going down a rabbit hole and glad more people are finding it. Nothing hasn't really been made like this game in a long time. Sure there are games later released that gives choices resulting in consequences (or simply illusions of choice that always has one specific consequence) but there aren't many like Dark Half has done.

Definitely looks like an interesting game.
I do like the idea of playing both the main protagonist and antagonist and their stories.
Though in order to do it accurately, you have to make both the story's appealing, which according to you they failed on the Falco storyline.
The battle system doesn't make sense like you said, you should always have control over your characters, but lets be honest the antagonist should have had the battle system where he controls his monsters, since you know, he's the bad guy, he controls things.
While in the protagonists story, it would make sense to have his allies do what they want freely, since he can't effect their free will.
Overall the game looks entertaining, and its definitely one I have never heard of till know, I'll have to check it out on my free time sometime.
Another awesome sauce of a review Daria.

+TenButtonGamer Yeah I agree, definitely seems a bit backwards. The "good" guys pick up some AI controller mercs but they don't show up until later in the game, and with three controllable heroes it's not that big of a deal. Plus they actually help.

Excellent review about an interesting and very good game! It is really too bad that so many RPGS the Super Famicom got were not released in the US and in Europe; and all of this just because Nintendo thought that these kind of games were too complicated for Americans and Europeans and not successful. Thank goodness FF and Dragon Warrior changed that (slowly) during the 90s.

Innnnteresting...and the fact that there's a character named Falco...I don't know if I should crack a joke about Falco's Rock Me Amadeus or make a pun about Falco Lombardi. I am quite torn.

Is this one of the first examples of good/evil polarity and actions having consequences? I feel like ideas like this may have paved the way for games like Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, etc. Great review, always enjoy them :) - Dustin

    • @DariaPlaysRPGs
      @DariaPlaysRPGs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Super Geek Friends Maybe? You don't really have that quantifiable good vs evil meter like the BioWare titles but the consequences certainly affect gameplay. It's an interesting question.

  • @RPGtourguide

I hadn't heard of this one before. It is a shame that interesting titles like this are left overseas and don't see the light of day outside Japan. But it is the sad tale of the lover of RPG's, as we were seen as unfit for so many released back then... Great video! I'll have to give this one a try sometime. :)

But I can not deny the ambition here. This game seems a treasure trove of ideas for newer games.

+Hemang Chauhan lol. It's difficult the first playthrough, but if you can stomach playing it again it gets easier when you know exactly what you're doing.I went through half the game not realizing I could change the AOE on my spells, so sometimes I would accidentally roast my own party members.

I've been waiting for this review. I like the idea of going down different paths in games. Usually it's the evil path I find more fun. Never been a fan of lawful stupid characters, but it looks like you're forced into both for a play through here. Still cool concept. I want to play this game someday. Never enough free time, so thanks for giving me a rundown of what I'm missing. It looks difficult from the exploration standpoint. I love going into every nook and cranny in games. bummer!
    Excellent video, Daria! :)

    • @DariaPlaysRPGs
      @DariaPlaysRPGs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Retro Island Gaming I think the game is designed to be played more than once. The first time you figure out how to play and like me probably end up letting the bad guy win. The second time you know to eat everyone and have Falco turn in all his relics. If you keep your soul points maxed out exploration isn't too big a drain, plus you won't get lost and waste them.

Cool I use try to play every japanese game few for nes but especially snes and playstation one with my friend before they were translated. We made fun of it as we didn't understand what was going on. For snes super famicon some highlights were: Ganbare Goemon (always liked the series), Seiken Densetsu 3, Dark Half, Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight (mech rpg), Super Robot Wars (tons of dialogue there), Langrisser, Dragon Ball Z - Super Saiyan Densetsu, Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes and Star Ocean. Then it was time to move to PSOne I collected every japanese game and few from europe as some adventure games never made it: To name a few: Fist of the north star, Oni zero fukkatsu rpg, a horror choose your adv game forgot its name), Parodius, Moon, Langrisser, panzer bandit, samurai spirits rpg, tales of phantasia, Brightis (an action rpg) and some dungeon crawlers . As of 5 years ago I ended gaming sold all 95% of my games to videogamesnewyork as the collection was stacking up had no space for it....... So the 5% last final rpgs bought for the psone system that were kept I haven't tried yet but they looked interesting Oasis Road, Startling Odyssey, Vampir: bealphareth, Vampir Kyuuketsuki Densetsu, Final Fantasy collection, Hello kitty variation and some collectible disks such as Carnage heart extra. After that my gaming days were done

Moon always looked really awesome - hope someone translates that some day but the community just hasn't latched onto PSOne they way it did with the SFC library. But if you like Goemon you should really check out ImportGamingFTW's video on the series. If you haven't already.

Happy Halloween! This game is in spite of its faults pretty amazing and could use a remake.
I agree that Rukyu has the best story here, but I think Falco's story is good enough, though bland. It gets way better in the second part of his story where he really begins to SPOILERS
serve the King of Robahm until…you know, he sacreficed humans to bide him sometime for his showdown with Rukyu over total control of the world just to gain power for the sake of power and exterminate all humans, due to viewing them as weak, pathetic, greedy with an insatiable hunger for blood and power, so basically he views humans as evil, just like Rukyu but is far worse than the Rukyu
It also has the amazing plot twist with Rukyu as the creator of all life and that the story of the fallen one was a lie propagated by his chosen ones. It also similiarities with the story of Radiant dawn, but I won't go further because, well, spoilers.
Overall, a great game in spite of having big flaws that would have to be reworked and fixed for a remake. Yes, I am hoping for a remake because I want to see this game get more spotlight, it deserves it!
Great video and I agree with many of your takes, like how uneven the combat system is and how great the story is, though I also liked the brighter half.
Once again, I wish you all happy Halloween and have some scary moments for it's the spookiest time of the year! YAY!

Never seen this game! Another great review. You were born to do this. I'm guessing a copy of this game won't come cheap. And speaking of Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land on SMS is easily in my top ten games of all time. When I was 9, I played it 12 hours straight, passed out and crapped my pants. In fact I'm going to play it right now. After I price Dark Half...
