  • @fy8798
    @fy8798 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I think in your comparison, some of the Genesis versions are actually better (like Oasis or Shining Force).
    The thing I'd also argue, however, is that overall the SNES has about three to four times as many great JRPGs compared to the Genesis... if you include the ones that remained in Japan. From Seiken Densetsu 3 to Rudora no Hihou, from Treasure Hunter G to Star Ocean to finally Terranigma (okay, we had that in Europe), the SNES has some pearls the west never got.
    But that doesn't make Genesis games bad, the Genesis still really has some great ones.

    • @DariaPlaysRPGs
      @DariaPlaysRPGs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah if you start throwing in unreleased SFC games the Mega Drive gets absolutely buried under a mountain of RPGs. But for what we had in the West, I think it's a decent lineup. Really wish we'd have gotten Surging Aura though.

    • @fy8798
      @fy8798 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Surging Aura would've been really nice, yeah!
      In the west, it really was sorta even. Even more so in Europe: We didn't get half of the good SNES RPGs, no Chrono, no FF6, zilch. Sure did get Story of Thor/Oasis and Phantasy Star IV, though. :)

      Personally, I'd call Shining Force 2 vs Breath of Fire 2 a technical draw. The world is similar, but the styles are different, and while I enjoyed more Shining Force, it's more because there are better turn based RPGs than Breath of Fire 2, but almost no Strategy RPGs as good as SF2.
      I still hate the ending of SF2, though. Poor Sarah...

    What I like so much about Sega Genesis ( Mega Drive ) RPGs is that they try to be more than what they can and they actually succeed . Like including cutscenes , or character sprites in the dialogue , it’s minor , but goes a long way to make them unique . Even Final Fantasy didn’t do that .

    This list really shows how hard Sega has fallen off in recent years. Shining Force is what got me into Tactical RPG like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. Phantasy Start 4 was the all time high point in the Phantasy Star Series the Music, Characters and setting all just knocked it out the park. Nice list.

    • @saysoun752
      @saysoun752 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sysrestrpx Dragon Warriors, aka Dragon Quest, was the game that got me hooked on JRPGs. My dad bought it but returned it because I didn't know how to play it, I was 9 at the time.Then Nintendo offered it as a free game, with strategy guide, if you subscribed to Nintendo Power. That was it for me as the guide helped me learn to play RPGs. As a late gamer to the Sega line, I also truly love Lunar, Phantasy Star, Shining Force and Beyond Oasis. With this said, maybe because I started out on a Nintendo system and still a fanboy to this day, nothing beat Chrono Trigger, Paper Mario or Final Fantasy II or III.

    Great concept for a video. For me Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star IV make an excellent pairing, as they are both extremely refined, easy to get into, fast paced, and fun RPG's that represent the zenith of the genre on their respective systems. They also share great graphics, memorable music, and that wonderful sci-fi/fantasy aesthetic.

      @shona-sof 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's subjective no matter what. Opinions simply cannot be argued in any meaningful way. I think that the majority of the 'echo chamber' you mention is simply a result of more people in north America playing SNES over genesis, and FF6 over PS4 by default. nostalgia glasses are where all this lies, so if you have a favorite, awesome! If you've only tried one, give the other a shot! More excellent games is much better than 'only the games _I_ think are better' any day.

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In my opinion, what puts Phantasy Star 4 behind FF6 is that is much smaller. FF 6 was gigantic. Storywise... well, that's probably more a matter of taste, so I won't go there (I did enjoy more FF6). And about characters... I'll go and say that the quality is about the same, but FF 6 had more quantity. Again, size.
      The combat system, though, FF6 was better, and it hurts me to say this. The combo system of Phantasy Star 4 was interesting, but also quite clunky.

      They really don't compare. All of them are way out there story wise and are more of a meta take on 16 bit RPGs. Earthbound doesn't try to get meta until the end, but it comes as a twist rather than the point of the game. Of the above mentioned games, Undertail is close in humor, but it gets too wrapped up in it's own meta style of storytelling.

    After seeing the beginning to this video, I _kinda_ wanna see a video about RPG commercials, lol. I sort of remember that now that I see it again, but it also sort of seems like it may be a weird nightmare filled with stop motion and puppetry :P Great video! It's always rad to hear about stuff I never knew of before (I had NO IDEA _Warriors of the Eternal Sun_ existed - I can't believe Westwood would try to rip off Ultima that much, holy jeez) and there's TONS of cool stuff here; it's always nice to see 'em highlighted!

    • @DariaPlaysRPGs
      @DariaPlaysRPGs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wish I could find more RPG commercials in good quality. I got super lucky with this one. Also why does Popful Mail look exactly like the Slayer's girl? Is that intentional?

    • @barry-allenthe-flash8396
      @barry-allenthe-flash8396 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like Lina from _Slayers_ intentionally influenced a ton of female protagonists in Japanese games from that era, but yeah, the resemblance in _Popful Mail_ in particular borders on rip-off... according to Hardcore Gaming 101, the two characters even share the same voice actress.
      I'd bet money it's probably one of those cases of a studio wanting to make a game based on something, but not wanting to bother with licensing at the time, - like how _Contra_ is just a pastiche of _Commando, Rambo, Predator_ and _Aliens_ - but that's just wild speculation on my part

    I'd actually argue that Phantasy Star 4 is almost the exact middle ground between Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger in terms of gameplay (random battles using characters that have a pre-determined move list with possible unlockable combo-techs, on a massive over world that allows random battles, but you can eventually switch between drastically different varients of overworld at will as the story progresses), with a heavy dose of Super Metroid in terms of music, and a more developed cast, and a better story than any of them (mostly because this was the very well done culmination of 3+ games worth of backstory while the other two were standalone titles, plus the manga stills during the cutscenes allowed a lot more emotive presentation than in-game graphics of that era allowed, though both FF6 and CT pay the envelope hard on that front).
    Another comparison between Final Fantasy 4 and Phantasy Star 2 is that both games have extra games released in handhelds that expand upon the story and/or characters.

    Shadow Run on the Genesis is my favorite video game adaptation of the franchise. The SNES Shadow Run isn't bad, but its controls spike my blood pressure. Langrisser is one of my favorite series of RPGs.

    I would personally suggest a better alternative to Arcana in the Snes Dungeon Crawler category: The Shin Megami Tensei games or the remake of the first two Megami Tensei titles, that one is named Kyuuyaku Megami tensei.
    I have yet to play BoF2 or SF2, but I would say that Tactics Ogre would be a better foil for Shining Force.
    Also, funny thing, Der Langrisser (the sequel for Warsong), has ports for both SNES and Genesis, it would be interesting to see a comparison covering those.

    I've been wanting to get Landstalker for some time now, mainly being the predecessor to Alundra. I played Shining in the Darkness a few years ago for the first time and despite those sharp difficulty spikes in the middle of each flood, I really enjoyed it. I love the Monster series, but haven't played World yet, and Popful Mail is one I've wanted to play since I was a kid and saw it in gaming mags, but haven't gotten to it still. Lunar is fantastic. The Genesis really does get ignored when it comes to RPGs, and my collection is definitely lacking still. Great picks and many seem like fair contenders.

      Sega is quite the ambitious game developer!!
      For nearly every hot game on the market, they seem to always come up with their own unique IP that's nearly as good or if not, better than the competition!!
      EX:
      "Castlevania"/"Master of Darkness"
      "Street Fighter 2"/"Virtua Fighter"
      "Donkey Kong Country"/"Vector Man"(pre-render graphic wise...)
      "Star Fox"/"Panzer Dragoon"
      "Dragon Quest" and "Final Fantasy"/"Phantasy Star"
      "Final Fight"/"Streets of Rage"
      "Pokémon"/"Mushiking: The King of Beetles"
      and the list goes on!!^^

    • @scissorman44
      @scissorman44 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a bit of a stretch
      Master of Darkness may be better than the first Castlevania but it get's roflstomped by the third one(and was released in the near vicinity of the fourth one...for the Master System instead of the more competent Genesis. That game's schedule baffles me on every possible level)
      And I never have heard about Mushiking, which isn't exactly great for it's brand(let alone Pokemon is the natural marketable evolution of Shin Megami Tensei regardless)

    • @Reginmund
      @Reginmund 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never played the Sega CD version of Lunar, but unless it's much inferior to the PS1 version I'd say those two are both among the best JRPGs ever made and personally I can't decide which is better. Both have great storylines, characters and music. When it comes to the battle systems CT's is more innovative but that's not necessarily a plus if you prefer a traditional turnbased system.

Final Fantasy III didn't suck me in yet on the SNES mini but I have been putting in a little work on Super Mario RPG, also a great game but I'm not nearly as invested into it as I have become to Phantasy 🌟 IV.

    I bought Arcana and Shining in the Darkness when they were first released and this is probably the only instance where I liked the Genesis game over the Super Nintendo game where both games are so similar. There was also a Turbo Grafx game called Dungeon Master that should be mentioned also but it would be a distant 3rd in my opinion. I had a Turbo Grafx system back in the 90's but they didn't have too many RPG's for the system. In fact the only good RPG for the Turbo Grafx system was Neutopia 2 and the game was a Zelda clone.

    Genesis is an underrated RPG machine (well, by SNES fanboys/fangirls anyway. Thankfully I like both consoles, like any sane person should ^_^). It didn't have as many RPGs in the "good" bracket as the SNES, but it had damn close to as many ones in the "excellent" bracket. Phantasy Star 2, Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force and Shining Force 2 are such a quatuor of masterpieces, I legit believe that they're as good as the best Squaresoft RPGs of the era (and depending on your tastes, you might prefer them). Just phenomenal games. And I say this as someone who grew up a Nintendo kid and played all the Square RPGs, and have amazing memories tied to those experiences. I'm probably the biggest Square SNES-era rpg fan that you know. But my friend back then had a Genesis and the 4 games mentioned above. And I was so damn fascinated by them, completely hooked. We even incorporated characters from those 2 franchises in our D&D campaigns. That tells you how captivated we were by them.
    Add to that a super solid SRPG in Warsong, that one can almost hang with the four above (sadly, the other Langrisser games weren't brought over the west, same with the Dragon Slayer ones. Althought some of them have fan translations now). And the best version of Shadowrun, and Phantasy Star 3. And add the Sega CD library to that (which I consider fair game) and you have even more choices.
    I won't include Landstalker, Crusader of Centy, Ys III, Arcus Odissey, Exile and Cadash in the list, as although they are awesome games, I don't like to include action-rpg in there.

    Some of them did feel a bit like a stretch, but I'll wholly admit to idolizing the SNES I bought in the early 90's and still play today (although mostly the new SNES classic as the pixelation is less noticeable on modern TVs). That said, I loved NBA Jam, Madden '95, Shinobi: Return of the Ninja Master, Sonic 2, STREETS OF RAGE 2, Desert Strike, TMNT and Rocket Knight - among others.
    So from one SNES buff to the Sega community I shared some love with, I don't think it matters all that much what system you preferred as long as you loved it dearly.
