This isn't a true comedy but a dark comedy, a subgenre; it's not meant to be taken completely seriously or light-hearted. What I love about this show is that it tackles the subject of death by threading the theme of George's acceptance of her afterlife while balancing the tone with sharp and funny dialogue. The only season feels like a mini-series of sorts. I'm telling you, they really attack different aspects of death and how as reapers it is supposed to be gruesome and messed up sometimes but death isn't always horrific. It's a big mystery. There are not many series at all, let alone in the history of American television that isn't an anthology that is good and balancing it. This is a Bryan Fuller series; he's brilliant. You may know his other works, Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, Wonderfalls, and American Gods.
This is a beautiful show. I introduced my friend and his wife to this show. I bought the two seasons on DVD. They ended up buying the seasons also. A couple of years later she developed terminal brain cancer. My friend told me they started watching the show again and it helped her deal with what was happening to her.
I forgot how messed up and strangely satisfying this show is. It kind of puts you in the mindset of may as well life your best life in this life because it is impossible to know what waits beyond it.

This is a great show. It's a good coming of age story. Personally I feel like it's a metaphor for growing up and not being a kid anymore. Keep watching because in season 2, Mason's "origin story" is told in a great episode.

"Off the grid" in this context means 'making money under the table'; it means outside government monitoring, so no taxes, no government benefits, no proof of income. If he died in 1966 (and especially if he died trying to get a 'permanent' high, so was a drug user) he did not have steady employment, so was experienced in ways of proving for himself without responsibly holding down a job. And a good part of his survival strategies requires a lack of ethics and a good deal of law-breaking. Just so you know, he's actually a relatively recent member of this Reaper colony.
So the idea of drilling of hole in your head to increase oxygen flow is called trepanation. It is taken from a very early medical procedure by people seeking a euphoric feeling from the increased oxygen to the brain. My first thought was brain infection and I never got past that part.
A show that was really similar in style had to me DROP DAED DIVA. Back in the Fifties there were also some movie in this stylle like the first time THE ANGEL WITH A TRUMPET was done 13:13 Rub calls her in the original PENUT, in the German dubbed version it is PÜPPCHEN = LITTLE DOLL.
I really love this show and rewatched it several times. But when I do, I usually skip the parts with Georges family in the later episodes, when they are not directly observed by her. I guess, the creator wanted to show not only the side of George, but also of those left behind. But in my opinion, this disturbes the flow of the story and also, there are literally thousands of shows that portray those who lost someone. But seeing the view from the deceased is what makes this show special.

Wait until you get to the movie after the series was cancelled, the entire storyline of this show was amazing. I really wish Ellen Muth went on to do more in Hollywood.
I think the smart thing to do if undead like them is try to hang onto some stuff until it becomes worth something like Ming Vases were common in the past and then due to lack of them surviving they became collectible and worth big money.
the problem is, Rube's explanation is "you just have to do it" and that isn't very useful, when as far as she can see, why can't someone else do it? "well you just have to" doesn't make much sense, and (like death) takes time to just accept.
Yeah they kinda all give her bad advice, but that's mostly because they don't know what to tell her. The reapers are only told the bare minimum to do the job by people who don't know what is going on either. Also they're all people who are either morally gray or just coasting through life like she was. None of them know how to live what could they tell her.

I don't think it's canon but my theory is you have to reap until your debts are cleared. The guy who died in 66 wasn't evil but he wasn't good either. He was selfish, and has remained largely selfish. Stealing gets you to "survive" as a reaper, but maybe it means you can't go to paradise? I mean, I'd be tempted to go on as a reaper. You would learn how to make money, realistically. Even if you only worked a few hours a day. It would be tricky to work around the tracking of finances we have now, though. But I can imagine someone writing, say, erotica, which is where the big money is, and getting paid in bitcoin. Cash out in gold and bury caches. It would pay to learn how to make a false identity. I don't realistically know how the reapers avoid being harassed by the surveillance state, though. It seems to me that the government would pick up on what they are doing and try to control them.
About Mason robbing parking meters and he's still stuck on Earth after 40 years-it's called karma. When he no longer steals (or wrongs people) he can collect enough good points to move on to the hereafter. In the first episode, Georgia replaced a grim reaper that only had to collect one soul, then he moved on.
Um, it was explicitly said that they have quota to fill (unknown to them), not brownie points to collect. On the other hand, nowhere was it said that the grim reaper that George (which is a form of her name she prefers) replaced only had to get one soul. George was his LAST one, not his ONLY one.

It’s a pure black comedy. Nearly every death is absurd and played for laughs. Nearly everything out of Rubes, Roxy’s and Mason’s mouth is a joke.
Have the serie on dvd. It was a great show. Sad that they cancelled it after the second season.
