    Great video, thank you very much. You’ve highlighted the most important parts well, and simplified it which I appreciate. The issue I’ve had with figuring this out… (which your video explained very well) was how the the stock is specified in the start line above the 1st G71. Some of the other videos I’ve watched ( over 12min long) seem to skip how crucial this line is. As well as the exit matching stock co-ordinate.
    I didn’t get quite get as far as seeing if you’d posted another video showing the the finishing pass with using the same sub routine in a G70 for the finish stock removal before writing comment. Although definitely comes in handy when writing programmes in the fly 💪🏻

    That has really helped! I struggle with the fear of programming cause I have the hardest time placing G-codes and coordinates in the right place.

    Hey Tom, Just wanted to say thanks. I couldn't get Inventor HSM to produce a good tool path for my simple part.
    I had been watching your videos so, I decided to do it myself using your examples. I looked up G71 in the HAAS manual and it's slightly different (depth of cut is D) but I was able to make the adjustments and my part turned out perfect. I specified X0.218 and it miked at 0.2180". For that simple operation I think it was actually faster doing it manually. Anyway..

    good video, I learned a couple things, but I also inadvertently introduced an error to my code because I misunderstood the phrasing when Tom mentioned the requirement that the X, (and the solution to my problem) ***ONLY X***, must have the same value as before the G71 call, seems obvious now but if you include the Z coordinate value from the approach position on that line you will get errors at the control even if not all simulators show it.
    Anyway, thanks again for the video, helped solidify a good principle.

    Thank you for this vid, it really helped me simplify things and make changes. On my final cut geometry (with G70), I have a radius. The specific line is G01 Z-5.5 R.025. Now my depth of cut is .300. When it is rough cutting in G71, it actually cuts into that radius, like it doesn't understand the radius geometry is there. It still makes the radius but there remains a small nick in it. Its not a big deal at all, I was just surprised to see it do that. Maybe I should use a G03, but that would complicate things a bit. This is on a HASS TL2. Thanks again!

      +mckeesk In other words, if I put an inside radius at the intersection of two perpendicular surfaces in the canned cycle geometry, it won't recognize it. It treats that as two right angled surfaces and will rough cut into the stock meant to be left on for the radius.

    i am not a CNC`er but with these videos i have really learnt a lot. my question is, how can we put a radius at the very start point of the material? that is how can the 0.5 inches smallest part be radius-ed?

      +igunnuoda olorunmuyiwa In order to add a radius on the front of the part the canned cycle would have the smallest X- diameter on the N100 line in this example. So if the radius is .100" than the diameter next to N100 would be X.300 instead of X.500 Then the radius would be part of the geometry section between N100 and N110. Hope that helps. Thanks Tom

    Question.. about the x and z dimensions that you leave for the finish.. are those dimensions being left for the finishing tool or for the finish (final) pass of your roughing tool..

      ncviewer.com/ This one works pretty well for mill... I haven't tried to see if it will do lathe. For the class I'm currently taking, this is the simulator we are using - media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/chet/careersresources/resourcessite/products/product.html#product,isbn=0132176033 Under "Student Resources" click "Student Simulations" and download the zip file. It will have some limitations since it is a student version... also, it seems to be very clunky and finicky so you may have to re-load it a couple of times to get it to work correctly.

    Hi Tom - i am new to lathe and Thank You ! My question is as follows: i noticed that the Feedrate was 0.01" ipm... is this to imply a percentage of the Spindle Speed and if so what is the G-code that tells the lathe to utilize this function (G96?) and how does one turn this relationship On or Off ?

      You are correct. I was wrong in the previous response and have removed it. The G96 controls the surface footage and yes changes the speed of the spindle depending on the diameter change to keep the tool tip from getting hot and wear out faster. The G99 controls the feed rate per revolution and G97 and G96 only control spindle speed. Thanks

    Hello Tom, Would G71 does the turning with multiple diameters and undercut on O.D. as well? I am thinking about program it but not sure if the G71 will do that. Please advise. Thanks

      +Mike Mai Yes but the G71 canned cycle can be used to turn undercuts or pockets on type 2 Fanuc controls only. Thanks Tom

    Correct me if I'm wrong but from what you showed us in your back plot and how you developed your program the cutting paths are not in sequence....shouldn't it be like this to match you back plot

    Bit confused, how does the machine know which way to retract if od and Id turning have positive values for retract distance.

      The P And Q diameters will be reverse.
      OD roughing the 1st N is the finished diameter (small diameter)and the second N will be the start diameter, usually the raw material diameter.
      On ID roughing the 1st N is the larger diameter (finish bore dia) and second N is the start diameter.

    Tom,
    Great videos, but go to the blackboard and write "G ZERO" 100 times- you tend to say G "OH" in your narration, and that will confuse the beginners.

      Tom,
      Yes, it's unfortunate that whoever wrote the original G codes did not recognize this issue and simply bypassed G0 and started with G1. I can't count the number of times guys have called me when learning their new machines and said " I told it to GO X1 and nothing happened"

      Sebastian Darlak Thanks for asking Sebastian. All X diameters on a CNC lathe are programmed diametral. So if your turned diameter needs to be 1 inch then the X value would be X1.0.
