Virtually nobody correcting you all on socialism in this comment section is a conservative. The liberal characterization of socialism as "any government activity" is deeply flawed and basically tosses away all socialist theory. Socialism is not Keynesianism. Socialism is social ownership of the means of production, and unless you're a Leninist, national ownership doesn't count.

      Social fascism
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Social fascism was a theory supported by the Communist International (Comintern) during the early 1930s, which held that social democracy was a variant of fascism because, in addition to a shared corporatist economic model, it stood in the way of a complete and final transition to communism. At the time, the leaders of the Comintern, such as Joseph Stalin and Rajani Palme Dutt, argued that capitalist society had entered the "Third Period" in which a working class revolution was imminent, but could be prevented by social democrats and other "fascist" forces. The term "social fascist" was used pejoratively to describe social democratic parties, anti-Comintern and progressive socialist parties, and dissenters within Comintern affiliates throughout the interwar period.

It was lead by Senator McCarthy, and in our lower house, we had a committee on unamerican activities. Anybody that had associated with the Communist Party even over twenty years earlier was hounded out of their positions and made persona non grata. It had a devastating effect on our universities and civic organizations. Ever since then, we've had a massive corporate propaganda campaign to equate "socialism" with "communism," until today, the John Birch Society is actually trying to tell us that Hitler was a left wing socialist!

      @genebaughbba 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes! I do! and I don't think I'm the only one on this. Every person in america who received a degree in business should know. I am astonished at the ignorance from friends the so called media experts.
I can see why people believe in conspiracy theories! I tell my self shame on them they must know what they are doing, it's so obvious they must know they are lining!
These clowns point to what are obviously, to any thinking and knowledgeable, one of us to be free market capitalist economies and shout, "See!! Socialism! It has it right in the name you idiot!".
I try to explain to these people that that is the political system they are talking about. And it only has very weak connotation even in that respect. It is they very last connotation in the definition, though that in itself is a threat to the current establishment. The Government works to benefit the people. Populist is a less complex word and is a much better fit. They probably didn't like the sound of the word.
Socialism did not always use to be such a dirty word. Probably because of widespread misunderstanding among the population at that time.
It is obviously a failed system and good riddance. I am afraid the population is still caught up in the angst of the battle to see if we would win the cold war. We did. I knew we would as long as we did not destroy ourselves
      first.
We won it with one hand tied behind our backs, while we were trying to help feed them!
Capitalism is the only system that works. OF COOOOOORSE! It just has to be as Ms. Clinton says "Bought to heel." I and Brilliant Bernie would agree on the phrase "Kept at heel" by the power invested in the Constitution.
Our generation, unfortunately, looks like we are going to have to convene all the states. I can't believe I'm actually admitting this just now to myself.
Maybe it's just our need for self importance right now which is a backlash at the current stress and anger many of us are experiencing. As subconsciously we collectively realize These difficult times for those at the bottom.
Some say we should leave them behind. I say no. The complete opposite It's our job as a species to all work together. All of us who have 46 chromosomes.
Please feel free to copy and paste this, or just tell me what you think.

Just because we have socialism integrated into our society doesn't mean we are a socialist country. Choosing not to recognize socialist programs as a form of socialism doesn't change the fact the these programs are a form of socialism. Now if you paid any attention to your high school government/economic classes, you would already know this.
Now if you want to see socialist government supposed to look like, look at France and Norway. Now if you want to see socialism fail, add corruption and authoritarianism into the mix. "State capitalism" is considered socialism, Frederich Engels thought that state capitalism was the last step taken by the goverment to make a socialist country, and this was the main system in wich the Soviet Union was on. After reading tons of comments on these socialism vs capitalism type videos, I've concluded that most people don't really know what they're talking about. An even bigger percentage just say stuff they read or heard from somewhere else without doing enough research to really make valid arguments. And even when the arguments sound reasonable, it's mainly based on assumptions and distorted information.
One thing in common I found is no matter what the stance is, everyone seems to be quite confident that their view is the right view. We can't all be right. I have the suspicion that we're all mostly wrong. We're all a bunch of kids acting like adults and none of us really knows what the hell is going on.

Wars destroy real economic wealth, and almost every economist (especially neoclassical people who you would have a boner for) would be against war. Unemployment exists because if it didn't people would starve and die every time they get fired from their job. This is not a scenario where "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" applies. This is the real world, with real people as imperfect as they are, and companies, run by people as imperfect (greedy, myopic) as they are.
I'll grant you that unemployment may need to be reformed, but taking it away all together will lead to death and misery by the millions, without question.

Issue is that monopolies exist and are superpowerful, so you don't even get much a choice regarding what to buy and people just tend to go to well-known brands because convenience and all that, and often these lot monopolise to some extent. Doesn't also help that these people also have connections with one another and can have ways of just influencing consumer purchasing decisions. Facebook is a good example of a company that does this, often by selling user data to advertisers and whoever else will buy a good price for it, and also censoring competition unless they are friends with and benefit facebook itself.

If you are not interested in your government, it does not mean, that the government will crumble. It means, that people of your community interested in politics will be able to govern upon you, because of your inaction.

This video is full of fallacies and misleading talking points.
First you must decide what the role of government is. When she refers to child labor laws and 40 hour work weeks, she refers to those aspects of legislation as socialism when that is really when government is supposed to protect Americans from exploitation to enforce justice. Secondly, public safety programs and institutions such as the fire department and the police, are indeed the role of government to enforce civil security and safety. Third point, spending money for defensive and offensive actions that deal with war is without question the role of government because it is the role of government to ensure national security.
Socialism is not as American as apple pie, the constitution is. Not a centrally planned system that eliminates prices, places blind trust in government bureaucracies, discourages incentives that are in accordance to our human nature and is therefore doomed to fail. That's not American that's failure.

Wow are you an idiot. Socialism is an economic system where the means of production are collectively owned by the workers, and workers are paid labor vouchers in accordance with how hard they work at whatever specific job. The state doing things in a "socialist" country, or a "Socialist Party" passing economic reforms to capitalism is not in itself socialism; rather a means by which to get to socialism. Socialism is supposed to be the transitional period from capitalism to communism; and in communism both money and the state are no longer needed and so are "abolished." By abolished I do not mean they're overthrown (like the capitalist state must be) but rather after a certain amount of time, there is no use for either of these things so they just become obsolete and have no power. I would suggest reading Lenin's "State and Revolution" for a more in depth look at how the transition from capitalism to communism is made; and it's important to understand that the things that happened in the USSR and China were not communism, rather attempts at getting there; failed attempts yes, but it did help both of those countries in the long run.

Why don't you go to Venezuela and tell them how they are one more failed attempt at communism?

Its nothing new, socialism has always looked good on paper, but liberals don't realize that you cannot have the good points of socialism without the obvious horrible effects.
0:40 To better understand this statement replace the word community with government, in fact to better understand socialism, replace every occurrence of "the people" "community" "cooperative" "public collective" with government when reading its political theories and ponder that for awhile.

Interesting, that she equates any tax paid program as socialist. It almost seems like she thinks that any “free” program provided by the government is socialist. And furthermore, she knows we fought to stop communism not socialism right?
She started the video by talking about the community regulating the means of production, but since when do the people make military decisions? We have no say until he budget or tactics of the military.

Greece does not have a large number of giant corporations as America does. The economy of Greece is supported mostly by small business. To try making small business grow larger, they gave small business a far lower tax rate than large corporations and citizens, as well as providing a wealth of tax loopholes. Guess what happened? The economy of Greece crashed. Instead of easing taxes on business, they raised taxes on the citizens, complicating the issue. That is the problem with that particular nation. Now if you take a look at the US, they are heading down the same path. Giving huge tax cuts to the rich and the big corporations, some of which pay no taxes at all. This is why that when Trump passes his tax plan, big companies and the rich got a permanent tax cut but the citizens tax cut is only temporary. What Reagan did was similar. After his tax cuts, he had to raise taxes again. Guess who got taxed more then? Guess who will get the tax increase within the next decade?

Capitalism: the rich own the means of production and exploit workers.
Socialism: the rich have to provide benefits to even out the massive imbalance between haves and have-nots.
Communism: the workers own the means of production, there are no rich or poor, society is based around abundance. Private commercial property no longer exists in any meaningful way, and the government's role is sharply curtailed.
For reference: the USSR was Leninist-Stalinist (bastardized offshoot of socialism; basically capitalism with one company--the state). The US is capitalist, heavily, with the most minor trappings of socialism. The closest thign to actual communism we've seen is the German model of mandating employee partial ownership of companies (which has worked fantastically well for their economy) and small productive communes where workers buy back their factories and use them to maintain production.

Big Government ≠ Community. We have a word for businesses owned and controlled by the community; they're called *cooperatives*. Social Democracy ≠ Socialism. Macroeconomics, nationalized industries, business unions, and the Welfare State are not examples of socialism. You cannot "collectively bargain" with capitalists, monopolize an industry in the hands of the state, or tax people to pay for corporate wars, and honestly say that you are acting socialistically. True socialism is anti-capitalist, and acts *outside* of the state; however, not all socialists oppose free markets (read Robert Owen, P. Proudhon, Benjamin Tucker, ext). Real socialism is practiced in America via intentional communities, mutual aid groups, cooperative businesses and housing, ext; not through the backwards reforms of statist capitalists posing as democratic socialists.

Paying your taxes isn't socialist. Even feudal economies had tributes and taxes paid to the ruling class. Socialism doesn't come in degrees--some things being "more socialist" than others. No! Socialism is the ownership of the means of production. We don't own the means of production. It's really weird how after she correctly defines socialism, she goes on to tries to make capitalist things seem socialist. It's almost as if she's trying to convince people to remain compliant in capitalism. After all, what revolution is there to fight for if we already have what so many say we need?
She's a capitalist liberal counterrevolutionary. (or maybe just dumb).

1.Weekends were established first for religious observances: Saturday for Jews, Sunday for most Christians.
Child labor was only eliminated after the nation was effectively rich enough to do so. No one sent their children to work in mines and fields because they wanted to, but because they had to in order to survive, just as they had for thousands of years before.
    2. Irrelevant. Einstein was a great physicist, but a terrible father; we listen to him for his knowledge of physics, not parenting. Thus Hemmingway for his writing, Houdini for his magic, not their (lack) of knowledge of economics.
    3. Public works "which are now crumbling"....because Socialism doesn't work. It's easy to build, particularly on debt, but when there is a lack of economic incentive to upkeep those public works, they degrade. This is why the best roads in Florida are on the Disney resort Properties, why toll roads are run better than public roads, private schools outperform public schools and so on.
4.The Military A. is not "the means of production", and B. the military (like virtually all government programs) is horribly mismanaged with tremendous waste. It's a model of inefficiency at a bureaucratic level. Thank goodness weapons and ships are produced by competitive enterprise, otherwise the military would fail on the battlefield as well as on the ledger.
5.Corporate welfare is awful, like all government forms of welfare. Companies should stand or fall on their own.
This is a great case against all socialism.
Seriously AJ+, learn a little about economics. And take a look at Venezuela while you are at it.

This is social planning. Yes a socialist leftist idea, but actual Socialism is the people having ownership, the workers owning there work place, no capitalist that makes money off there labor. It just removes the capitalist and puts the power in the hands of the people for them to democratically own there workplace together. It’s a pure democracy.
Social planning is when the people all pay into a program that pays for its function like all the things she names in the video.
